Physical Description

Appearance
Xanadu is a striking toddler with an abundance of thick, dark curly hair that frames her face in loose spirals and refuses any attempt at management with cheerful consistency. Her eyes are a vivid, unusual green, bright and attentive, the kind that adults find themselves looking at twice. Her complexion is warm olive, smooth and even, and she moves with the unhurried quiet of a child who is never in a hurry because whatever she is doing right now is exactly interesting enough. She favours deep, rich colours and wears them well, purple and gold being current favourites. She is almost always either holding a crayon or asking for a story, frequently both at once, and she approaches both activities with the same absorbed, downward-focused concentration that makes her look as though the rest of the world has temporarily ceased to exist.

Unique Characteristics
A small, bright starburst mark rests on her forehead, a luminous white point of light that is the most visible sign of her aasimar heritage. It does not glow constantly, but it brightens perceptibly when she is deeply happy or absorbed in something, which means it is almost always lit during stories and drawing sessions. She holds crayons with both hands depending on her mood, switching between them mid-drawing with no apparent preference, and she covers entire pages before declaring a piece finished. Her drawings are, as one would expect of a two-year-old, interpretive in nature, but she narrates them with considerable conviction and takes a dim view of anyone who asks what something is supposed to be before she has finished explaining it herself.

Personality

Positive Traits
  • Calm and self-contained, content with her own company and her crayons
  • Deeply imaginative, narrates her drawings with elaborate detail
  • Warm and affectionate with family on her own terms
  • Patient listener, particularly during stories
  • Gentle with people and objects she has decided are important
Challenging Traits
  • Strongly objects to stories being stopped before they are finished
  • Has very specific opinions about which crayon colour is correct for a given thing
  • Becomes deeply unimpressed if someone skips pages in a book
  • Physical activity is of limited interest unless it was her idea
  • Her half-brother Xander and his relationship with her drawings is an ongoing source of grievance

"Again." [said immediately upon a story ending, with the expectation that this settles the matter]

"Dat is a dragon." [said with absolute authority about a drawing that contains no identifiable shapes, followed by a look that dares you to disagree]

"Xander NO." [directed at her half-brother near her crayons]

  • Loud sudden noises that break her concentration
  • Xander within arm's reach of her art supplies

Background & History

Born Between Worlds
Xanadu was born on Goldenleaf 11, 1304, the day after her half-brother Xander, to Xaneborr Shadowbane and Salia. The starburst mark on her forehead was present from birth and identified her immediately as an aasimar, a child touched by celestial heritage in a way that neither parent fully anticipated. She arrived quietly, which as it turns out is entirely in character, and has maintained that energy consistently in the two years since. She is not loud about her presence. She simply makes it felt.

A Daughter After Salia's Heart
Salia is a scholar and a teacher, someone who has spent her life among books and the people who love them, and Xanadu arrived in the world already oriented in the same direction. She found stories early and has not lost interest in them for a single day since. Salia reads to her every evening without exception, and Xanadu listens with the focused, still attention of someone who is absorbing something rather than simply hearing it. She has strong preferences about which stories get repeated. She has even stronger preferences about how they are read. She has, on multiple occasions, corrected Salia's intonation. Salia finds this delightful. It is mutual.

The Artist and the Audience
Xanadu found crayons and has not looked back. She draws every day, covering pages with elaborate scribble-narratives that she explains at length to anyone who sits still long enough to listen. The subjects are dragons, adventurers, things she has seen in books, and things she has invented based on things she has seen in books. She does not draw lightly or briefly. She commits. A full page, every colour used at least once, the starburst on her forehead glowing quietly the entire time. Her half-brother Xander has a complicated relationship with her art supplies, which she monitors with an alertness that she does not apply to most other things. She has not forgiven him for the incident with the green crayon. She may not.

Goals

To Hear That Story Again
There are specific stories. She knows which ones they are. "Again" is not a request so much as a statement of the natural next step, and she delivers it with the calm certainty of someone who has never considered that the answer might be anything other than yes. Her current favourites involve dragons, brave travellers, and things that are very large and very far away. She listens to all of them with the same absolute attention, and she will correct you if you change a word.

To Finish the Drawing
There is always a drawing in progress. It is never finished until she says it is, and she will know if you have moved it. She approaches each one with total seriousness, selecting colours with the deliberation of someone who understands that the green is not the same as the other green and that this matters. What she is drawing and what it represents are two different questions, and she is happy to explain the second one at length regardless of how the first one looks to outside observers.

Growing Into Her Light
Xanadu does not yet have words for what the starburst on her forehead means, or for the warmth that spreads through her chest when a story reaches its best part, or for why she feels compelled to put things down on paper the way she does. These will come in time. For now she simply follows the pull of them, toward stories and colours and the quiet pleasure of making something that was not there before. The celestial heritage she carries is patient. It will wait for her to grow into it. It is already, in its own small way, keeping her company.

✨ Development Notice
Xanadu is two years old, presents as a calm and self-possessed child with strong preferences and a clear sense of what she is interested in, which is stories and drawing, in that order. The starburst mark on her forehead is an active indicator of her emotional state, brightening during moments of absorption or happiness, and should be noted as a potential early sign of emerging aasimar abilities. She is not physically inclined and shows no interest in training or combat activities. Those caring for her are advised to ensure she has a consistent supply of unbroken crayons and access to a reading companion in the evenings. Disruption of either of these will be met with calm, sustained, and extremely effective disapproval.
