Appearance

Seylah is a tall, sturdy five-year-old whose Shadowtitan heritage presents identically to her twin's at a glance: the same soft lavender skin, the same white hair, the same fine silver freckle-like markings across her cheeks. Look longer and the differences emerge. Where Celeste tends toward quiet stillness, Seylah is in motion, posture forward, weight on the balls of her feet, already looking for the next thing to climb. She wears her hair up in a high ponytail, which stays out of her way on a rope swing, and she still gravitates almost exclusively toward black, which she has had strong opinions about since before she had the words to express them. Her knees are usually scuffed, her hands are usually dirty, and she considers both of these signs of a day well spent.

Unique Characteristics

Her pointed ears are expressive and flatten when she is frustrated, which gives a useful early warning to anyone paying attention. The first time something goes wrong, the ears twitch and she simply tries again. If the second try fails too, the ears go flat, and whoever is nearest should step back. She has her father's directness in her face: when something is wrong, you will know immediately, and she does not consider this a problem. She also has more of his strength than a child her size should, which matters, because when someone pushes her far enough she tends to answer with a small, hard fist to the belly. The silver freckle markings on her cheeks are identical to Celeste's and brighten faintly in the same circumstances, though Seylah has not noticed this and would find it irritating if she did, since she prefers to be clearly distinguishable from her twin.

Twin Birth

Seylah was born the second of the twins to Arties and Xaneborr, moments after Celeste. From the beginning she was the louder of the two, the quicker to express a preference, and the one more likely to make it known immediately when something was not to her satisfaction. This was noted with affection by her parents and accepted as simply who she was from very early on.

Her Father's Daughter

As Seylah has grown, it has become clear that she carries her father's temperament more directly than her mother's. Xaneborr is a direct, decisive person who knows what he wants and moves toward it without much patience for delay or detour, and at five, Seylah is the same. Lately she has also started lingering at the edge of the training yard whenever Xaneborr drills with her older brothers Xanric, Madrov, and Attritti. She pretends to be doing something else. She is not. She watches every swing and every footwork drill with total concentration, and she has been seen repeating the stances in the hallway afterward when she thinks no one is looking. She has not asked to join them yet. She is still watching her mother, too, because Arties handles the world with a composure Seylah genuinely admires and keeps trying to copy. The attempts are improving.

Life With Celeste

Seylah and Celeste are not identical in temperament, which both of them are aware of and neither of them minds particularly. Celeste is still and quiet and reads things. Seylah climbs things, races things, and occasionally takes things apart to see how they work. They are the fixed point in each other's lives regardless, and Seylah's protective instinct toward her twin is genuine and constant, even in the middle of an argument with her. When they were smaller, she would push other children away from Celeste before they understood what was happening. These days, anyone who is unkind to Celeste is more likely to get a fist in the belly, and Seylah does not consider that a question worth discussing.

Growing Up Geodegazer

Seylah has a large household of siblings at various ages and stages, and she has clear opinions about all of them. She likes people who are direct and do what they say. She has little patience for complicated emotional situations, which she finds confusing and handles by going outside and running, climbing, or swinging until things settle. Her play has become steadily more physical: she has left blocks and dolls behind almost entirely in favor of the playground, and she will take a rope swing or an obstacle course over anything described as cute. The family has learned that a Seylah who has been outside for an hour is a much calmer Seylah, and plans accordingly.

At School

For all her temper, Seylah is a genuinely excellent student. She learns quickly, earns high marks, and consistently finishes near the top of her class, especially in anything that rewards speed or getting the right answer first. The catch is boredom. A lesson that moves too slowly, or repeats something she already understands, leaves her slumped in her seat and staring out the window, bored nearly to tears and fidgeting to get outside. Her teachers have learned that the best way to keep her engaged is to give her harder work, and the best way to keep the classroom calm is to let her run hard at recess first.

Goals

To Beat the Course

There is always a course. It might be the playground, a line of fence rails, or a route across the garden that she has decided counts, but the goal is constant: get from one end to the other without touching the ground, without falling, and faster than last time. When she manages it, she immediately makes it harder. What she really wants, though she has not said so out loud, is to be fast and strong enough that her brothers stop going easy on her.

Working on the Calm

Seylah knows her temper is a problem, mostly because of how people react when it arrives. With her mother's help she has settled on a rule that works most of the time: when something goes wrong, try again. The first failure she can manage. It is the second one that undoes her, and that is where she is working now, on finding a third try instead of a fist. It does not come easily. She has managed it on a few recent occasions, and the warmth those moments earned her was noticed, and remembered.

Being Different From Celeste

Seylah loves her twin completely and does not want to be her. She has a strong sense of her own identity, her own preferences, and her own ways of doing things, and she notices when people treat her and Celeste as interchangeable. She does not say much about it, but it matters to her. She is Seylah. Celeste is Celeste. She wears black. She climbs things. These distinctions are important and she intends to keep making them clear.
