Early Life in Stoneharbor
Hana was born in the Dwarven city of Stoneharbor and lived there for most of her youth until her family migrated to Grafton to become sailors and world-class fishermen. Her father, Grittis "Sideburns" Hammerbraid was one of the most prolific sailors in the last century. He, alone, helped guide their family through some dire straights when the city hit its hard times. His large family would reap the benefits of his name for over a decade. The Hammerbraid name became synonymous with excellence on the seas, and Hana learned the ways of water and wind from the best.
Family Tragedy and Independence
When Sideburns' ship was destroyed during the last "Storm of the Century" the family broke apart and went their own ways. Hana's brothers (Hernstein, Thinagg, Bagith, Dwokoth, Balun, Strommand and Rezec) split to the four winds, leaving their younger sister to fend for herself in Grafton. Hana, being the proudest daughter of old Sideburns, decided to not get her spirit crushed and stayed in her home city, building a life for herself. In time she gathered a reputation of being a top-notch sailor and capable fisherman, proving that the Hammerbraid legacy lived on through her.
Joining the Geodegazer Estate
Her life changed substantially when a new group of travelers nearly drowned in the harbor. She couldn't let them drown, as no self-respecting dwarf could do that. Now she found herself suddenly (and constantly) on the move to stranger and stranger places. As a member of the Geodegazer Estate, she spent most of her time cooking for everyone and play-fighting with her best friend, Iris. Between the two of them the Estate was kept clean and fed. These were some of the happiest times of her life, surrounded by the chosen family she had found after losing her birth family to tragedy and distance.
Return to Stoneharbor and Transformation
In early 1302, Hana accepted an opportunity to stay in the city of Stoneharbor and help her home city rebuild itself after the "Battle of Stoneharbor." The offer was extended by the new king of the city, Durgath Ironbreaker, who very clearly took a fancy to her. After only a few months she stumbled upon a Potomi Fruit and dramatically changed her physical appearance when she stepped up from F-grade to E-grade. In this transformation she lost her beard, but became an enduring beauty to most. This physical change marked not just her elevation in power, but also her transition from wandering sailor to potential queen.
Marriage and Queenship
Shortly after her elevation to that new role, Durgath proposed to her. The two were married in late Harvestide of 1302, when all the leaves were brown and gold. Hana chose her best friend, Arties, to be her maid of honor. The two friends now see each other often, if not to talk official Coalition business, then to discuss life, love and family. The wedding was a wonderful event that raised the spirits of Stoneharbor dwarves and Goodberry citizens alike. As Queen, Hana has already shown tremendous spirit and courage in all things, bringing her practical wisdom and caring nature to the challenges of leadership.
Assassination Attempt and Loss
Hana's first child was due in early Mistfall. However, an assassination attempt was made on her life (and that of the other Coalition leaders) and she was found totally surprised and helpless. The assassin's cursed blade cut deep and fast, nearly killing the Red Queen in seconds before her guards stopped him. The damage had been done, though. Hana's baby was gone and she, herself, was laying on a stone table as healers of the city tried to save her. It wasn't until Arties arrived in Stoneharbor and learned the condition of her friend that real help arrived. Within minutes, Arties constructed a team of skilled medical people and healers to remove the accursed rot that the assassin's blades carried. After 10 hours of intricate surgery, Hana opened her eyes and wept, forever changed by the loss but grateful to be alive.
The Battle for Verdant Hold
On the first day of Frostmoon, 1304, the Chromatic Council attacked the city of Verdant Hold, the headquarters for the leadership of the Southern Coalition. The Coalition was ready, though, having already evacuated the city and setup defenses. Hana took on the role of General and brought 5,000 dwarven warriors with her. The Red Queen took up her hammer to defend this city at such a pivotal turning point in the war against the Council, choosing to stand with her friend, Arties, until victory or death. Though Hana suffered several nasty wounds in the battle, including getting kicked through a brick wall by an Ogre, the Southern Coalition emerged victorious and eradicated the Chromatic Council once and for all. Freedom was finally secured.
Second Chances
After the loss of her first child, Hana was told that she would probably be unable to bear children in the future. Little did she expect all of that to change in the legendary "Month of Sowing"... a time where an unprecedented number of women were impregnated, even despite contraceptives or, in some cases, physical inability to host a child. Hana found herself with child, just like 1,000,000+ other women across the face of Xeres.
The Birth of Durric
On Goldenleaf 9, Hana gave birth to a healthy son she and Durgath named Durric, a Waveforged name meaning "Enduring Leader." To Hana, the child is nothing short of a miracle, a gift she had long believed would never come after loss, grief, and the wounds left behind by violence. From the moment she first held him, joy returned to her life in a way she scarcely remembered was possible, filling the quiet spaces left by years of responsibility and hardship. She speaks of Durric with an unguarded happiness, seeing in him not only a future king, but a living promise that Stoneharbor's people can endure, heal, and thrive. Every smile, every breath, feels like a victory earned.
A Mother's Desperate Gambit
On the day she went into labor with Solvana, Xaneborr's daughter, conceived in the chaos of the drugged night at the Estate, Hana made a decision she has never fully forgiven herself for, and has never once regretted. She took Durric with her to Goodberry. She also took the satyr infant, her husband's other unwitting legacy from that same cursed evening. Once at the Estate, she brought both children to Nokko and asked him to use his bloodline ability to transform the satyr child into a perfect duplicate of Durric, same face, same build, same Waveforged features. Nokko did not ask many questions. He rarely does. The clone was sent back to Stoneharbor in the original's place. Durgath, who has no knowledge of what Nokko can do, has no reason to suspect anything. He holds what he believes is his son, sees his own face in the child's eyes, and mourns in silence for the wife he lost. The city mourned Hana for a full month. She was well loved, and that grief was real, and Hana carries it too from a distance. Her son's name became Malgrum, an old name, common enough not to draw attention, dwarven enough that he might pass without question in a household full of children from everywhere. She chose it quickly and has not let herself dwell on what it cost to retire the name Durgath gave him. She is not proud of what she did. She will tell you so directly if you ask. But she will also tell you, just as directly, that she is not sorry. Malgrum is hers. Solvana is hers. And she would burn Stoneharbor's harbor to the waterline before she gave either of them up.
Life in the Geodegazer Household
Hana now lives as a permanent guest of the Geodegazer Estate, and "guest" has become something of a gentle fiction, she is family, and everyone knows it. She arrived carrying two children and a lot of complicated history, and was received without judgment, which is perhaps the thing she needed most. Arties opened the door. Hana walked through it. That was more or less the end of any formal arrangement. Malgrum and Solvana are growing up surrounded by more siblings and honorary siblings than most children encounter in a lifetime, which Hana considers the best possible outcome available. They will be stronger for it. She is sure of this. She tells herself this often, in the quiet hours, when she allows herself to think about what the real Durric's life in Stoneharbor looks like, and what the man she married believes about the people he lost. Hana has found, to her own mild surprise, that she is content. Not unburdened, she carries what she did and will carry it always, but content. She loves the people around her. They have accepted her. Her children have a family. For someone who has survived as much as she has, this is enough.
