Physical Description
Appearance
Hotaru possesses striking bronze skin and copper-colored hair that catches the light like burnished metal. His most distinctive features are the luminous tribal tattoos that cover parts of his body, glowing with a soft ethereal light, and his deep blue-green eyes that burn with an inner radiance. Standing at an impressive 6'3", his athletic frame is not merely the result of farm labor, but of a man honed through years of rigorous conditioning as a hunter and ranger—lean, powerful, and built for endurance, speed, and precision. His physique reflects a life spent tracking through wild lands, drawing heavy bows, climbing rough terrain, and meeting hardship head-on. His movements carry both grace and purpose, marking him as someone equally comfortable wielding weapons or tending crops.
Unique Characteristics
Hotaru is almost never seen without at least one firefly hovering near him, often two or three, drawn to his presence by his connection to nature and the glow of his tattoos. These luminescent companions seem to follow him wherever he goes, creating a subtle nimbus of soft light around him especially at night. His tribal markings pulse with greater intensity when he channels druidic magic or experiences strong emotions, serving as a visible indicator of his spiritual connection to the natural world.

Background & History
The Angel's Eternal Witness
Circles. Cycles. The beginning is the end is the beginning. The angel Ahotarus had witnessed countless beginnings and endings throughout eternity, fighting across the planes in the Heavens, sometimes in Hell where she even ruled for a time before returning to serve in the former. Yet one thing always called to her: the mortals of Xeres. She watched helplessly as every sun set simultaneously, witnessing all of time being erased, but like every circle, every cycle, it begins where it ends. Reincarnation is a curious thing, and she knew she had to return to the world because the Fearless would need her. She had ignored Xeres's call too many times before, but this time she would answer. Yet reincarnation rarely follows expected paths, especially when one's patron and creator no longer exists as either, and the Heavens would have their way with her rebirth.
Birth of the Firefly
A Wyvaran child was born into a small kobold village on an island shared with a tribe of Oni-blooded devilkins, becoming part of the Wyrmwhisper tribe, a community of green kobolds who worked the mines beneath the earth while maintaining an uneasy peace with their devilkin neighbors. The birth of a Wyvaran was always an auspicious event for the tribe, heralding the arrival of a new leader who would guide them into prosperity, as the tribe's wyvern blood had grown diluted over generations making such births exceedingly rare. This child's eyes glowed with an ethereal yellow light, earning him the name Hotaru after the fireflies that illuminated the island's nights, though from his earliest days he felt spiritually different, hearing the voices of Xeres and the Heavens while experiencing flashes of memories he had never lived.
Love on the Island
Young Hotaru chose to ignore his strange visions and focus on the world before him, which increasingly centered on Nultero, a beautiful red-skinned devilkin girl who was the chief's daughter. Their friendship blossomed naturally as he was the future leader of the Wyrmwhisper tribe and she the devilkin chief's daughter, with their relationship actively encouraged by both communities. They were betrothed to marry upon reaching their sixteenth year, marking adulthood in both cultures, and Hotaru's gift for gestural communication proved invaluable in building a deep connection with the mute girl. They shared everything: music, for which both showed remarkable talent; diving for mollusks in the clear waters; preparing wild boar for inter-village festivities, with one rarely seen without the other.
The Fall of Paradise
As their sixteenth birthdays approached and preparations for the joining of the two tribes were underway, darkness fell over the island when their volcano erupted, sending ash, fire, and smoke into the sky. Through this hellish veil emerged a great red wyrm, laying waste to everything in its path, while boats filled with red draconian warriors appeared from the sea bringing death to all they encountered. Hotaru and Nultero raced to save as many children and elders as they could, eventually reaching one of the tribe's voyaging vessels, but just as the ship reached capacity, Hotaru felt a sharp crack against his head. His last vision was of Nultero standing over him with a broken oar in hand as she pushed him and the vessel full of children into the current's embrace, sacrificing herself to ensure their escape.
Awakening to Truth
Hours later, he awoke in an ash-covered bed, drenched in sweat within a stone building he somehow recognized, and the visions crashed over him like a tidal wave as he realized he had lived this before, or had he? This time felt real and visceral, yet it had been "she" before, proving the Heavens cruel masters indeed as everything Ahotarus had constructed as memory in her previous existence had become his lived experience. Though he grieved deeply for his lost village and his first true love, purpose soon found him again as he must find the Fearless. As his angelic memories began to fade once more, surfacing only when needed to guide his path, Hotaru followed the voices of Xeres and the Heavens to join the Fearless, finding the camaraderie he had known in ages past.
The Mine and Rebirth
This brotherhood would see him through decades of battles, eventually leading to their defeat and imprisonment in a mine where their bodies withered and minds lay dormant as they endlessly worked the earth. But circles complete themselves, and the beginning is the end is the beginning. They awakened with their minds restored completely, albeit with unexpected passengers from souls who had died in those mines, finding themselves bound to new purpose and new struggles.
Gardener, Farmer, and Soon-to-be Father
Now, some years into their travels, Hotaru finds himself as a gardener and farmer on the Geodegazer Estate, tending to the land and ensuring the prosperity of his adopted tribe. He is engaged to marry Echo Nightsong, with their wedding planned for shortly before the birth of their child in mid-Harvestide. His role as protector and guide continues to define him, with all the residents of the Geodegazer estate as his family and tribe, his number one priority. Though there is no official Geas mandated by the Heavens anymore, there does not need to be, for he would defy the Heavens themselves to save anyone in the Geodegazer tribe.
Marriage Beneath Gathering Storms
Hotaru and Echo Nightsong were wed in a season shadowed by war, determined to claim joy before fate could deny it. Their union symbolized hope for a battered community, and Hotaru embraced husbandhood with fierce devotion. Yet during the conflict with the Chromatic Council, Echo became the target of an assassination attempt. Though she survived, her injuries stole much of her memory. Emerging from tragedy as someone changed, she took the name Minuet, and the life they had built together began to fracture beneath grief, confusion, and the cruel weight of circumstance.
The Satyr and the Fall
While seeking a cure for his friend Aroha's poisoning, Hotaru journeyed into desperate lands and there met a satyr woman named Faelka. Their connection was immediate, intense, and life-altering. In weakness and longing, Hotaru betrayed the vows he had once sworn. Minuet departed from him, carrying their unborn child away into the world. Faelka, having sacrificed an ancient sacred flower to create the antidote, took the name Nira in its honor. What followed was a whirlwind romance forged in scandal and judgment, as the close-knit community watched Hotaru stumble through love, guilt, and the consequences of his own choices.
A Daughter Returned
In the midst of turmoil, grace found him. Through the combined efforts of Arties Geodegazer-Shadowbane, Eden, and Sana Geodegazer, the spirit of Hotaru's daughter from a previous cycle was restored to the world. Little Lio returned not as memory, but as child. She became the anchor of his better nature and one of the deepest loves of his life, reminding him that redemption was not beyond reach.
The Wish and the Battle of Verdant Hold
A trickster god granted Hotaru a wish meant in jest and catastrophe. Its power spread across Xeres, bringing rampant fertility, forced conceptions, and unchecked abundance that threatened the balance of the world itself. Amid the chaos, Hotaru marched beside Arties Geodegazer-Shadowbane and Karthos into the Battle of Verdant Hold. There they emerged as heroes when the Council was broken. Yet victory on the battlefield did not spare him from defeat at home. In the quiet after war, Nira learned the truth of the wish and felt deeply violated by what had happened. Hotaru, ashamed and defensive, handled her pain poorly, widening wounds neither knew how to heal.
Ashes of a Marriage
Determined to become the man Nira wanted, Hotaru hollowed himself out trying to reshape every flaw. He became soft where he needed conviction, silent where he needed truth, and performative where sincerity was required. Though their daughter Sunniva was born and Lio was miraculously granted living flesh, blessings could not mend what trust had lost. When Nira was called to Nexora, emotional distance became final distance. Later, found guilty of crimes against the settlement there, their marriage was annulled. Before the end, she sent bitter words that cut both Hotaru and Lio deeply.
The Pink Devilkin
When slavery was legalized across Xeres, Hotaru faced one of the defining choices of his life. In the markets of Uir, he purchased a young pink devilkin named Esyrx not as property, but to save her from certain death. Freedom was only the first gift; dignity, patience, and safety followed. As he helped her learn how to live unchained, affection slowly grew within him. Yet Hotaru wrestled with shame and restraint, knowing Esyrx was healing from horrors no affection could erase overnight.
Vessa and the Search for Himself
In those uncertain months, Hotaru also adopted a small freed devilkin girl named Vessa, whom he met beside a turtle pond. She loved him almost immediately, and he loved her as a father from that very moment. Still searching for direction, he left behind a trail of unintended heartbreaks. He dated Escar of Our Home, a woman who had cared for him for some time, though his heart remained unresolved; something Lio recognized long before he did.
The Beach, the Truth, and a New Beginning
On Esyrx's birthday, upon a quiet shore, truth finally surfaced. Their closeness could no longer be denied. When Escar discovered them, Esyrx fled in shame, but Hotaru ran after Esyrx, not after the woman he had been dating. In that choice, all illusions ended. Lio later found Esyrx and, in a gesture of acceptance and hope, shifted her form to resemble the pink devilkin and called her mother. From there, Hotaru and Esyrx embraced the family they had already become. They married before the Games and soon conceived twins.
The Quiet Happiness
Hotaru performed poorly at Xaneborr's Games, exhausted by the joyful chaos of newlywed life and distracted by wanting to impress the woman he loved. Yet what seemed failure mattered little beside what followed. In the calm months after, twins Lumen and Lucien were born. Lio grew into a disciplined dungeoneer and gifted healer. Vessa flourished beneath a secure roof. Esyrx stood beside him not as someone saved, but as his equal and beloved wife. In this season of peace, Hotaru made another deeply personal choice: he laid aside the old family name Wyrmwhisper. The name had belonged to a different age, one rooted in draconic blood and the people he once was. His household had become something new: a family of angelic grace, devilkin fire, and lives forged through love rather than lineage. To honor that truth, and to weave Esyrx's heritage into the identity of their house, he chose the name Emberlight, a union of flame and radiance, passion and hope. For the first time in all his turbulent life, Hotaru found something deeper than victory: intrinsic happiness. He had family, the love of his life, loyal friends, and a city worth protecting.

Goals & Aspirations
Guiding Silmarithil as Its Duke
Hotaru now views his highest civic calling as serving the people of Silmarithil as their Pathfinder — a ruler not defined by crowns or indulgence, but by service, foresight, and the willingness to walk the road first so others may follow safely after. He wants the city to flourish as a place of beauty, prosperity, and refuge, where people of every background may build meaningful lives beneath the shelter of its boughs. He believes leadership is not domination, but stewardship: solving disputes fairly, strengthening alliances, improving trade and defenses, and ensuring the city grows without losing its soul.
Leading the Young Striders
Hotaru's heart is deeply invested in the Young Striders, the youth order he has helped shape into future stewards, protectors, and friends of the natural world. He wants the children under his guidance to grow into brave, capable adults who respect life, defend the vulnerable, and understand that strength is meant to shelter rather than control. Through badges, lessons, outdoor trials, and shared traditions, he hopes to give them what many children never receive in troubled times: confidence, belonging, discipline, and joy.
Being the Best Husband and Father
More than titles or glory, Hotaru's greatest personal aspiration is to be the best husband he can be to Esyrx, and the steady, loving father his children deserve. He wants his home to be a place of warmth, laughter, safety, and trust — a sanctuary where his family never doubts they are cherished. Having known failure, loss, and the pain caused by immaturity, he now treasures the quiet victories of family life: patience, consistency, tenderness, and being present for those he loves.
A Pillar of Strength
Hotaru continues to maintain rigorous training of body, spirit, and skill so that he may remain a pillar of strength for all who depend on him. He refuses complacency, believing that comfort can dull the edge needed to protect others when hardship comes. Through martial practice, archery, physical conditioning, and communion with the natural world, he seeks not vanity but readiness. He wants those around him to feel safer simply because he stands beside them.
Protecting Haven and Its Extended Family
Though much of his focus rests on Silmarithil and his household, Hotaru still considers the people of Haven his extended tribe. He hopes to be the fun, dependable uncle figure to its children and a steadfast ally to its adults — someone who can offer laughter, guidance, practical help, or a strong hand whenever needed. He knows family is not always forged by blood, and many of the bonds he values most were chosen rather than inherited.
Cultivating Prosperity in Harmony with Nature
Hotaru remains devoted to building abundance through honest labor and wise stewardship of the land. Whether through farms, orchards, forests, civic planning, or herd maintenance, he wants communities under his care to thrive rather than merely survive. His primal bond with nature gives him a deep respect for balance, and he believes prosperity should never come at the cost of the world that sustains it.
