Early Life in the Stripecoat Clan
Born to the Stripecoat clan in a small but prosperous Badgerian settlement nestled in the western foothills of the Dragon's Eye Mountains, Pumpafido's early years were steeped in the rich trading traditions of his people. Badgerians were known throughout the region as shrewd but fair merchants who specialized in root vegetables, preserved foods, and practical tools, traveling between settlements in small, well guarded caravans. From the moment he could count, Pumpafido showed an extraordinary aptitude for numbers and value assessment, often correcting his elders' calculations to their mixed amusement and annoyance. The Stripecoat clan held a respected position within the settlement as keepers of the communal stores, responsible for ensuring fair distribution of goods and managing trade with neighboring communities.
The Night of Destruction
The settlement's destruction came without warning on a crisp autumn evening. The first wave of skeletal warriors struck during the Harvest Festival, when the entire community had gathered in the central square. The Badgerians fought bravely, their natural tenacity making them formidable even against supernatural foes, but they were ultimately overwhelmed by the relentless undead horde. Pumpafido survived by pure chance, having been sent to retrieve additional spiced cider from a storage den at the settlement's edge when the attack began. His uncle, mortally wounded but still fighting, intercepted him and ordered him to hide in the hidden emergency storage burrow beneath their home. For two terrifying days, Pumpafido remained hidden in the darkness, listening to the sounds of destruction above, clutching his family's ceremonial trading scales.
Salvation by the Green Dragon Legion
When Pumpafido finally emerged, the settlement was in ruins, bodies strewn throughout what had once been a thriving community. In shock, he began the Badgerian mourning ritual automatically, collecting a small pouch of soil from the central square to carry with him, as tradition dictated when one must leave one's ancestors behind. He had just completed this solemn task when the remaining undead, drawn by movement, began to converge on him from all directions. Salvation came in the form of Xaneborr and a scouting party from the Green Dragon Legion. Following reports of unusual activity in the region, they arrived just as Pumpafido was making what would likely have been his final stand. Xaneborr himself led the charge into the square, his massive frame cutting down the skeletal warriors with efficient brutality.
Finding Purpose in Service
Initially, Xaneborr intended to leave Pumpafido in the care of a nearby human settlement, but something about the young Badgerian's fierce determination and refusal to show fear despite his obvious trauma impressed the commander. When Pumpafido offered to work as payment for safe passage, demonstrating his knowledge of supplies and logistics by reorganizing the scouting party's provisions in a matter of minutes, Xaneborr made an unusual decision. He took Pumpafido into his personal service as a page, an unprecedented position for a non-draconian in the Green Dragon Legion. The arrangement proved beneficial for both. Pumpafido found purpose in his new role, channeling his grief into meticulous service. His natural talents for organization and commerce quickly made him valuable beyond mere page duties.
Rising Through Expertise
Over the past few years, Pumpafido has evolved from a traumatized refugee into an indispensable member of Xaneborr's operations. Officially still a page, his responsibilities have expanded far beyond the traditional role. He maintains Xaneborr's personal equipment, runs messages, and serves during meetings and meals, but he also manages aspects of the commander's personal finances and has become the de facto Head of Logistics for the entire operation. The draconian officers have largely accepted his presence, some even seeking his advice on mercantile matters, recognizing expertise regardless of its unusual source. His suggestions have saved the legion countless resources through more efficient supply chains and better trading arrangements with local merchants.
Preserving Culture and Building Legacy
The traumatic loss of his entire community has left deep scars that Pumpafido conceals beneath a facade of brisk efficiency and occasional humor. At night, he still performs the traditional remembrance rituals of his people, reciting the names of those lost and the values they embodied, determined that the Stripecoat clan's legacy will continue through him. He meticulously documents Badgerian traditions, recipes, songs, and stories in a journal, fearful that without such records, his people's culture will vanish entirely. This dedication to preservation extends to his work, where he unconsciously incorporates Badgerian principles of fair trade and efficient resource management into everything he does.
Life in Goodberry and the House Competition
When Xaneborr made the dramatic decision to leave the Chromatic Council and march his forces to join Arties Geodegazer, Pumpafido never questioned the choice, instead throwing himself into the logistics of moving thousands of troops south with characteristic efficiency. Now settled in Goodberry as part of Xaneborr's entourage, Pumpafido has established himself as an integral part of the community. Using his legitimately earned wealth from years of brilliant mercantile work and shrewd investments, he has built one of the two largest private residences in Goodberry, a magnificent three-floor structure with fifteen rooms that rivals even the most impressive homes. The only other residence of comparable size belongs to Nokko, the flamboyant devilkin tailor. Though the two have never met, they exist in a silent competition, each aware that someone else in Goodberry has matched their architectural ambitions, creating an unspoken rivalry that amuses those who know both of them.
