Military Heritage and Early Training
Born into a family with generations of military service in the northern draconian territories, Rorkshom was raised on stories of honor, duty, and the warrior's code. His parents, both veteran soldiers, instilled in him the fundamental values of military discipline: respect for the chain of command, protection of one's brothers-in-arms, and the sacred duty to serve something greater than oneself. From childhood, he was trained in traditional draconian combat techniques, weapon maintenance, and tactical thinking. Unlike many of his peers who enlisted for glory or adventure, Rorkshom joined the Chromatic Council's forces out of a genuine belief in the importance of military service and the need for strong, disciplined forces to maintain order in a chaotic world.
Rise Through the Ranks
Rorkshom's natural aptitude for combat, combined with his unwavering dedication to duty and his ability to remain calm under pressure, quickly caught the attention of his superior officers. He earned steady promotions through the ranks not through political maneuvering or seeking favor, but through consistently excellent performance, reliable judgment, and his ability to execute orders with precision and efficiency. His fellow soldiers came to respect him for his fairness, his willingness to share hardships, and his refusal to ask others to take risks he wouldn't take himself. By the time he reached the rank of sergeant, he had developed a reputation as someone who could be trusted with the most difficult assignments and the most challenging troops.
Finding the Perfect Commander
When Xaneborr took command of the Green Dragon Legion, Rorkshom was a seasoned sergeant looking for a leader worthy of his loyalty and respect. What began as a purely professional relationship, built on mutual competence and shared military values, gradually developed into something much deeper. Xaneborr's combination of tactical brilliance, genuine concern for his troops, and unwavering moral principles resonated perfectly with Rorkshom's own beliefs about what military leadership should be. For his part, Rorkshom's steady reliability, tactical expertise, and absolute dedication made him an invaluable second-in-command. Over the years of campaigns together, they developed an almost telepathic understanding on the battlefield, able to coordinate complex maneuvers with minimal communication and absolute trust in each other's judgment and capabilities.
Growing Doubts About the Council
As the years passed and the Green Dragon Legion carried out increasingly questionable missions for the Chromatic Council, Rorkshom began to notice a growing disconnect between the noble ideals they ostensibly served and the harsh realities of their orders. While he maintained his loyalty to Xaneborr and continued to execute his duties with professionalism, he couldn't ignore the evidence that the Council's leadership was more interested in power and control than in the justice and protection they claimed to champion. His innate sense of honor began to conflict with some of the missions they were assigned, though his training and discipline prevented him from voicing these concerns directly. Instead, he watched his commander carefully, noting the same troubled expressions and thoughtful silences that suggested Xaneborr was wrestling with similar moral conflicts.
The Five-Minute Decision
When Xaneborr called Rorkshom into his command tent for what would become the most important conversation of their careers, both men understood the gravity of the moment without need for lengthy explanations. Xaneborr laid out his growing concerns about the Council's direction, his moral objections to their recent orders, and his decision to break away and join the Southern Coalition. Then came the question that would define their future: "Are you sure?" It wasn't asking whether Rorkshom was certain about following orders; it was asking whether he was certain about following Xaneborr into an uncertain future, abandoning everything they had built for an ideal that might cost them everything. Rorkshom's answer was immediate and unequivocal. His trust in Xaneborr's judgment was absolute, and if his commander believed this was the right path, then that was enough. The conversation lasted less than five minutes, but its implications would shape the rest of their lives.
The March South and New Allegiances
During the challenging transition from Chromatic Council forces to Southern Coalition allies, Rorkshom proved invaluable in maintaining troop morale and discipline among soldiers uncertain about their future. His unwavering confidence in Xaneborr's decision helped convince many wavering soldiers to remain with the legion, while his practical approach to logistics and organization ensured the transition went smoothly from a military perspective. He took particular care in establishing protocols for integrating their military experience with the Coalition's more diverse fighting styles, working to preserve the best aspects of their former military traditions while adapting to new circumstances and objectives. His steady leadership during this uncertain period earned him the respect not only of his fellow Green Dragon Legion veterans but also of his new Coalition allies.
Spiritual Awakening and Future Path
In the previous timeline, Rorkshom eventually retired from active military service and found a new calling as a preacher of the Dusk Lord, suggesting a deep spiritual nature beneath his martial exterior. This transition from warrior to spiritual leader indicates his capacity for growth and his desire to serve others in different ways as circumstances change. While currently still active in military service, there are signs that he may be beginning to explore questions of faith, purpose, and what legacy he wants to leave beyond his military achievements. His conversations with fellow soldiers sometimes touch on deeper philosophical questions about duty, honor, and the nature of service, suggesting that his spiritual awakening may already be beginning to take shape in subtle ways.
The End of the Beginning
Rorkshom was present in 1304 when the Chromatic Council attacked Verdant Hold in force, their goal of eradicating the Souther Coalition ran by Queen Arties and King Xaneborr, his friend and leader. Rorkshom fought not only for his friend and his comrades, but for the unborn child his wife was carrying. Rorkshom and Ring had been spending a lot of time together over the past year, planning, organizing, strategizing... then they realized how much they enjoyed each other's company. When Ring discovered she was pregnant, Rorkshom set the date for the wedding. They were wed a week before the attack came. He fought with all his heart to protect his new family. In the end, the Coalition was successful and the Council was eradicated. His son, Vaelkirr, was born on Goldenleaf 6, 1304 and was the proudest moment of his life.
