Ssariel Kre
Basic Information
Bloodline Ability
Most hunters who survive apex predators survive them through speed, or luck, or a well-placed spear thrown a heartbeat before instinct would have frozen their arm. Ssariel has never had the freezing problem. Something in her bloodline removed the startle response other creatures rely on to warn them that fear is the correct reaction, and left in its place a half-second of borrowed stillness at the exact moment a predator commits to its strike. She does not decide to be calm. The calm simply arrives first, before the danger has finished announcing itself, and by the time everyone else's body has caught up to what is happening, she has already moved.
It is not precognition. She cannot see an attack coming from across a clearing, and she has the scars to prove it. What she has is an unnaturally precise read on the instant a living thing's weight shifts from threat to commitment, the fractional tell in muscle and eye that separates a predator that is still deciding from one that has already decided. Most hunters call this experience. The elders of Ssi'Thesska who first watched a nine-year-old Ssariel walk calmly out of the reach of a striking serpent knew better. Experience is learned. What she was born with did not need to be taught.
She has never made much of it. Among a people who count an oracle who speaks for a god as one of their own, a hunter who simply does not flinch is not considered especially remarkable, and Ssariel prefers it that way. She does not perform the gift. She uses it, quietly, on anacondas and thunder-lizards and things with too many legs, and she lets the tribe draw whatever conclusions it likes about how a woman keeps coming home from fights that kill everyone else who tries them.
Physical Description
Ssariel wears her pale blonde hair pulled up into tight braids and loops, threaded through with beads and bone that click faintly when she moves through brush without disturbing a single leaf. A dense pattern of emerald scales climbs from her hairline down across her forehead and cheekbones and continues unbroken down her right arm and shoulder, a marking far heavier and more complete than is typical even among Vishkanya, which the tribe has always taken as a second sign to sit alongside her bloodline. Her eyes are a bright, unsettling green that most people find easier to look near than to look into directly, and she holds a stillness in her posture, even at rest, that reads less like calm and more like something that has simply not decided to move yet. She dresses for the jungle and nothing else: wrapped bindings at the forearms, a woven halter of hide and cord, and little that would catch on a branch or slow a throw.
Ssariel wears a cord strung with teeth and claws around her neck and does not treat it as jewelry. Each piece came out of something that tried to kill her: a curved fang the length of a finger, a serrated dinosaur claw, the barbed mandible of a spider the size of a cart. She can name the circumstances of every kill on the cord without being asked twice, though she rarely offers the second telling. She does not blink first. Hunters who have sparred with her, and predators who have hunted her, have both remarked on it, though only the hunters lived to complain about how unnerving it is.

Fear is just information. I have hunted things that make the whole jungle go quiet, and none of them needed my fear to kill me. Only my hesitation would have.
I did not follow Ssi'Katha out of Ssi'Thesska because she commanded it. I followed her because she was the only one of us who looked at a dying home and decided what came next, instead of standing there watching it die.
Every tooth on this cord had an owner who thought it would outlive me. I wear them so the next one remembers that is a gamble.
