Physical Description

Cedrick Falken
Cedrick Falken, The Black Falcon
Appearance

Cedrick Falken is twenty-three years old and has the look of someone who has been grown into rather than arrived at, broad-shouldered and tall, with the build of a man who has trained seriously since childhood and has not stopped since. His curly golden-blonde hair is worn loose to his collar, the kind of hair that does exactly what it wants in weather and has apparently won that argument years ago. His eyes are a striking pale blue, the sort that read as cold from a distance but prove far more attentive up close, constantly reading a room without appearing to. He is, by any honest measure, handsome in a way that his general seriousness of manner makes easy to overlook until it is suddenly difficult to.

His armor is black plate, full coverage, well-fitted, and not newly made. It has been lived in. Rain beads on the polished surface and settles into the etched lines of the falcon crest on his breastplate, an emblem he had worked into the steel himself at considerable expense. The choice of black was intentional: House Falken fights under a gold crest. Cedrick fights under his own.

Unique Characteristics

He keeps his armor clean. This is not a small thing, knights in active service have a tendency to let the field accumulate on them, to wear their marks like credentials. Cedrick disagrees. He polishes his armor each evening as a practice, not a vanity, in the same way he drills footwork at dawn that he could perform in his sleep. His shield bears the same falcon crest as his chest piece, and a thin scar runs across the back of his right hand from an early tournament where someone got past the guard he has never let past it since. He doesn't mention the scar. He simply does not lose that exchange anymore.

Personality & Temperament

Positive Traits
  • Principled and consistent; word and blade both reliable
  • Genuinely courageous, in the quiet way that needs no crowd
  • Loyal once that loyalty is given, and not easily revoked
  • Has a dry, deadpan humor that catches people off guard
  • Patient in conversation and combat, where it matters most
  • Takes his craft seriously; respects those who do the same
Challenging Traits
  • Reads as cold or aloof until you actually know him
  • Stubborn about his code, sometimes past the point of use
  • Carries a quiet chip about being the second son
  • Slow to ask for help; sees it as a failing to fix
  • Pride and honor sometimes pull him in opposite directions

A knight who fights only when it's convenient isn't a knight. He's a man with an expensive sword and a good story.

The shield isn't cowardice. The shield is the reason I'm still alive to swing the sword. Ask anyone who's fought me which one they remember more.

I didn't come here to be compared. I came here to be useful. Those aren't the same thing, and only one of them matters.

Likes
  • Early morning drills, the kind everyone else skips

  • The weight and balance of a good shield
  • Quiet, he reads when he can, though he doesn't mention it
  • Earned respect over inherited rank
Dislikes
  • People who invoke title or bloodline instead of skill
  • Cowardice dressed up as strategy
  • Being compared to his brother as if it's a compliment
  • Poorly maintained gear, his or anyone else's
  • Lengthy ceremony when the situation calls for action

Background & History

The Second Son of House Falken
House Falken is a minor noble family from Thornwall, a fortified city on the western reaches whose entire cultural identity is organized around its walls and the men who defend them. The name "Falken" is old tongue for falcon, and the golden bird on the family crest has meant military service for six generations. Cedrick was born the second son, which in Thornwall means the eldest gets the title, the seat, and the future, and you get the armor. He received it at eight years old, not full plate, obviously, but his father stood him in front of the family's ancestral crest and told him that the house had given him its name and its training, and whatever he made of that was entirely on him. He found this motivating in a way that probably was not the intended lesson.

Trained to Fight, Chose to Excel
Cedrick's formal training began at eight under Master-at-Arms Volen Crae, a retired Thornwall wall-captain whose philosophy of combat could be summarized as: the sword wins the fight, the shield wins the war. Crae was methodical, demanding, and entirely unimpressed by birthright, which suited Cedrick perfectly. By fourteen he was outperforming older squires. By sixteen he was assigned the sword-and-shield style formally, after it became clear that his natural patience and footwork were built for it. He was knighted at nineteen after distinguishing himself in a significant engagement during a border dispute between Thornwall and its eastern neighbors, one where his shield wall held a pass for eight hours against odds that should have broken it in two. His commander noted in the official record that the youngest soldier on the line had not moved once. This is, in military circles, considered high praise.

The Black Armor and What It Means
House Falken fights under gold. Cedrick's armor is black, every piece of it, from the pauldrons to the sabatons, and has been since he commissioned his full plate at twenty-one after his first year as a knight. He did not make a speech about it. He simply arrived to formation one morning and there it was. His commanding officer raised an eyebrow. Cedrick explained that the family crest was his brother's inheritance, and that he intended to earn his own. The falcon on his breastplate and shield is his design, not his house's, and he will tell you that the difference matters even if you cannot see it from the outside. Most people cannot see it from the outside. He considers this, quietly, part of the point.

What Brought Him to Goodberry
Stories about Arties Geodegazer-Shadowbane and the Southern Coalition reached Thornwall the way all significant stories do, slowly, and mixed with enough embellishment that the kernel of truth takes time to locate. What Cedrick found when he located it was a leader who had built something real under genuinely impossible conditions, who had fought for people who had no claim on her protection, and who had continued fighting after losing things that would have ended most people. He found this more compelling than any of the standard options available to a second son with a sword and no title to inherit. He put in for transfer to Haven's service, completed the appropriate process, and arrived in Goodberry this week with his armor, his shield, and no particular plan beyond being useful to whoever needs it most.

Goals & Aspirations

Prove the Crest Rather Than Inherit It
The core of everything Cedrick does comes back to a simple and not particularly complicated ambition: he wants the name Falken to mean something because of what he did with it, not because of what his ancestors left behind. He is not interested in replacing his brother or outshining his house. He is interested in arriving at the end of his career with a record that required him to earn it. Goodberry and Haven's service feel, for the first time, like the right scale of thing for that ambition to find its proper expression.

Find a Cause Worthy of the Commitment
Thornwall's border engagements were real, and Cedrick fought them honestly, but they were small disputes over territory that no one would remember in a generation. He wants to be where the decisions that actually matter are being made, and to have been useful when they were. He has not said this out loud to anyone in Goodberry yet. He has been here less than a week. But it is the reason he transferred, and the reason he polished his armor carefully before he arrived.

Master the Art He Has Chosen
Sword-and-shield fighting is, in Cedrick's view, an underestimated discipline that most people treat as the safe option rather than the demanding one. The shield requires as much technique as the sword, more footwork, and a different kind of patience that takes years to develop properly. He drills it every morning. He reads theory when he can find it. He has studied every significant shield-line engagement in Thornwall's military records and several that were not in Thornwall's records. He is good at this. He intends to become the kind of good that leaves no room for argument.

ATTENTION!
Cedrick Falken arrived in Goodberry this week and has not yet established himself enough to be properly assessed. What is established: he is a trained knight with formal Haven military credentials, four years of field experience, and a combat style built around the sword-and-shield discipline that his old commanding officer described in writing as "extremely difficult to get past and genuinely unpleasant to fight." He is young. He is still figuring out his place here. He is also almost certainly going to be excellent once he does. Give it some time.
