Growing Up Different in Farenhall
Born to one of the few grippli families living in Farenhall, Bramble learned from his earliest years that life would require extra effort and determination from him simply because of his race and appearance. His parents worked as cleaners in the city's wealthier districts, taking on the humble but necessary work that kept the prosperous areas of Farenhall functioning, and often had to bring young Bramble along when they couldn't afford proper childcare. While other children his age attended school and received formal education, Bramble spent his formative years watching the constant construction and maintenance work happening around the city, becoming fascinated by the way buildings were erected, roads were paved, and infrastructure was maintained, developing an intuitive understanding of how things were built that would serve him throughout his life.
Early Entry into Construction Work
At the young age of twelve, Bramble took his first paying job as a construction helper, using his small size and natural agility to access tight spaces and cramped areas that larger human workers simply couldn't reach safely or efficiently. The human foreman who hired him initially saw him as something of a curiosity, expecting little from the young grippli, but quickly recognized Bramble's dedication to the work and his willingness to tackle any task without complaint. Despite facing regular discrimination from some workers and contractors who often paid him less than his human counterparts for the same work, Bramble maintained his unwavering determination to prove his worth through the consistent quality of his efforts rather than through complaints or confrontations that might cost him employment opportunities.
Building Strength and Reputation
Over the years of demanding physical labor, Bramble developed impressive strength for his size, becoming capable of handling loads and performing feats that surprised even his experienced human co-workers who had initially underestimated his capabilities. He gradually built a reputation as an exceptionally reliable worker who could be counted on for any task, no matter how difficult, dangerous, or unpleasant, and who would complete his assignments with thoroughness and care. Though he never learned to read well due to his lack of formal education, he developed an intuitive and practical understanding of construction techniques and structural integrity that even more educated engineers and architects came to respect and rely upon, recognizing that his hands-on experience provided insights that couldn't be gained from books alone.
Surviving Economic Hardship
When war began disrupting the established trade routes that supplied Farenhall, construction projects became increasingly scarce as materials grew expensive and new building came to a virtual halt. The resulting intense job competition often saw Bramble passed over in favor of human workers, despite his extensive experience and proven abilities, as employers gave preference to workers who looked more like the majority population. Rather than allowing himself to become bitter or resentful about these injustices, Bramble adapted by taking whatever work he could find, from dock loading to road repair, building an even broader reputation as someone who could successfully adapt to any job that required physical labor, reliability, and practical problem-solving skills, proving his versatility and resilience in the face of economic adversity.
Seeking New Opportunities in Goodberry
Word of Goodberry's establishment as a new settlement reached Bramble through conversations with other workers, who spoke enthusiastically of a place where individual skills and work ethic mattered more than race or social standing. The idea of a community being built from the ground up appealed deeply to his practical nature and construction experience, as he understood that new settlements always have urgent need for strong backs, willing hands, and the kind of versatile labor skills he had spent his career developing. With work becoming increasingly scarce in Farenhall and discrimination limiting his opportunities despite his proven track record, Bramble made the decision to make the journey to this promising new community, carrying little more than his essential tools and his hopes for a fresh start in a place where he would finally be judged by his work ethic and abilities rather than his appearance or species.
Guarding Life
In his first few weeks in Goodberry, it became obvious that his skill and determination at manually intensive tasks would not be needed. Goodberry's bubble seemed to provide everything they needed without the blood, sweat and tears of a strong back. He found his mood darkening over time... until he was approached by Varon Steelheart, captain of the guard that oversaw Goodberry's protection. He was surprised when Varon requested he join their watch. Since he had nothing else to do, he agreed, but caveated to the captain that this would be only temporary until some laborious effort arrived. A year later, his life had changed. People spoke to him instead of mocking his simple, slower nature. He felt accomplished, respected and ... seen for the first time. He began to appreciate his new role.
Simple and Sunshine
Though he was a guard in good standing, Bramble began to feel alone in the world. He was one of only 3 Grippli in the city, and the only male. Neither of the females here had any romantic interest in him and he had learned long ago that anyone outside his species would find the idea of him as a mate to be repulsive, if not comedic. Thankfully, though, his best friends, Hecks and Durkum, really helped him see the silver lining in everything. Then one fateful morning he went for a swim in the lake in the basin and bumped into Loola, literally. They laughed and joked at their accident and spent some time getting to know each other. Days turned to weeks and they found they really enjoyed each others company. Friendship turned to passion one night... a night that would come to be known as "The Sowing," a night where so many Xeresians were blessed with 'fruitful' blessings of nearly immaculate conception. Two months later Bramble learned that Loola was pregnant with his child. Despite the war approaching in a few days, his heart was full of joy and wonder.
Beginning a Family
On Goldenleaf 7, 1304, his girlfriend, Loola, went into labor and gave birth to a beautiful Grippli baby girl that they named "Zilibee" which meant "buzzing light" in their native language. From the moment Bramble set his eyes upon her he knew that his life and its purpose had changed forever. Suddenly, things seemed clearer and his path in life felt like it made sense. He doubled his efforts during training and began to take literacy lessons from a local teacher. Every day after work Bramble came to see Loola and Zilibee, since Loola said she wasn't ready to settle down just yet, though they remain a couple. Bramble treats his daughter with the utmost love and respect, and sees her as the single brightest and best moment of his life.
