Varon Steelheart
Basic Information
Bloodline Ability
The three clockwork devices embedded in Varon's armor tick in perfect synchronization at all times. This is not a design preference. It is a necessity. Each watch is calibrated to the specific frequency of his bloodline, a living instrument tuned to the gap between one moment and the next, and they must agree with each other completely or the ability cannot function. When Varon chooses to act, he stops one. The ticking ceases. The second he interrupted does not pass. And everything within thirty feet of him is pulled sideways out of normal time and into a pocket of existence where the present moment has simply stopped arriving.
He calls it nothing. He does not discuss it. The people who have experienced it from the outside describe only a brief absence, a flicker, as though Varon and whoever he was standing near were simply not there for a fraction of a heartbeat, and then Varon is back, and the other person is not. Inside that space, time still moves for Varon. His body ages. His lungs breathe. His mind runs at full speed. Everything else in that dimension experiences the moment as though wading through deep water in a dream. Movement is labored. Thought arrives late. Healing that would otherwise begin does not. For them it is not stillness but something worse, a slowing so severe that it amounts to helplessness while Varon operates at his normal pace with his full precision.
What happens in there stays in there. The bodies of those he kills do not return with him when he steps back into the present. They remain in the stopped second, suspended in a dimension that has no further use for them, cosmic refuse in a room that no longer exists on any map. This is why no one has ever survived to describe the interior. The only testimony available belongs to Varon, and Varon does not testify. Each watch he sacrifices, stopping it permanently and irreparably, extends his reach by thirty feet. With all three watches spent he commands a ninety-foot radius of stolen time, enough to swallow a room, a courtyard, a guard formation.
The watches he wears are always replaced. He makes them, ensuring that every use is personal and warranted.
The Phoenixborn Ifrit balances destruction and renewal, stands at the threshold between what burns and what is reborn from the burning. Varon's bloodline simply removes certain things from that cycle entirely. They do not burn. They do not renew. They stop, and stay stopped, and the world continues without them. The secondary expression of this bloodline is quieter, stranger, and in some ways more consequential than anything the watches do. Varon feels it as an urge, a pull, a wordless conviction in the presence of certain people that something about them fits something he is building, that their bloodline, whatever it is and however it expresses itself, belongs in a specific role he has not always fully articulated yet. He cannot read what the bloodline is. He cannot measure its strength. He only knows that the feeling is never wrong, and he has learned to follow it without requiring an explanation from himself or from them. It is how his guard force was assembled. Not by resume. Not entirely by performance. By that quiet, reliable certainty that arrived when he was standing close enough to feel it. The Phoenixborn Ifrit is transformative by nature, and in Varon this has expressed itself as a man who transforms threats into absences and assembles strength from the intuitive recognition of potential. He does not advertise either ability. The watches tick. Most days that is all anyone notices. Its when the ticking stops that you should be concerned... but by then, its probably too late.
