Bloodline Ability

⭐ The Guiding Star

Every Aasimar carries the star-shaped mark of their heritage on their brow, but in Serratus it burns unusually bright and unusually purposeful. Her family calls it the Guiding Star. Serratus calls it "the thing on my forehead." It does not detect evil. It does not reveal lies. It will never once tell her what the right decision is. What it does is react, without fail and without her control, to immediate danger closing in on someone nearby: the closer and more imminent the threat, the brighter it shines, up to a sudden flare bright enough to light a room when the danger is seconds away. It has never once triggered for a threat aimed at her. It has never failed to trigger for a threat aimed at someone else. Anyone who has served alongside her long enough has learned that when her forehead suddenly shines like moonlight and she says one word, "down," there is no version of the following two seconds where staying upright was the correct choice.

Physical Description

Serratus Crestia
Serratus Crestia, newly arrived in Goodberry
Appearance

Serratus has silver-white hair, unnaturally clear blue eyes, and a luminous, star-shaped mark set into her forehead that makes hiding what she is essentially impossible from across a room, let alone up close. At twenty-nine and D-grade, she has the kind of effortless, striking beauty that tends to precede her into a conversation, which she finds mostly inconvenient. She dresses like exactly what she is: a professional soldier, in well-fitted, well-maintained armor she cares for herself rather than delegating, with practical modifications, sensible straps, and none of the ornamental flourishes people sometimes expect from someone who looks like her. She carries herself with the compact, economical posture of someone who has spent years making sure her body is never doing more work than a situation actually requires.

Unique Characteristics

Beyond the star itself, Serratus reads as almost deliberately unremarkable for an Aasimar; no distant gaze, no cryptic pronouncements, none of the destiny-touched affect people expect the moment they clock what she is. She counts things: days of rations left, hours since the watch last rotated, how long it's been since the person next to her actually slept. She notices exhaustion in other people's shoulders before they'll admit to it themselves. She keeps her own gear in immaculate condition and expects, without saying so out loud, that everyone around her will eventually meet that same standard.

"Serratus Crestia." Someone looks at the glowing star. "Yes. Aasimar." A pause. "No, I don't know what your destiny is." Another pause. "And if you ask whether I can bless your sword, I'm leaving."

"Down." And everyone who has served with her before immediately hits the floor.

You do not get to hurt these people.

Background & History

The Thing on Her Forehead
Serratus grew up watching her family treat the star on her brow as a sacred inheritance and a promise of some larger purpose waiting to unfold, the way Aasimar families often do. She never felt the pull toward destiny that Aasimar are supposed to feel, or if she did, she decided early on that it looked a great deal like ordinary hard work and paying attention, and chose a soldier's life instead of a prophet's. Her family still calls the mark the Guiding Star. She has called it "the thing on my forehead" since she was old enough to have an opinion about it, and has never once walked it back.

The First Time It Mattered
Early in her service, Serratus's unit was moving through a town when her forehead flared bright enough to stop conversation, aimed at nothing near her at all. She said one word. Everyone who knew her well enough had already hit the ground before they understood why; a crossbow bolt meant for a child in a doorway three buildings down went wide a half second later. Nobody in that unit ever needed a second demonstration. The reflex spread through every unit she served with after that, quietly, the way genuinely useful superstitions do.

Acceptable Casualties
Serratus built a long, capable military career on exactly that instinct, protectiveness rather than piety, and tolerated a great deal in service of commanders she otherwise respected. What she would not tolerate was a commander who started treating acceptable casualties as a routine cost of doing business rather than a genuine, weighed-out last resort. She let it go, once. The second time it happened, under the same command, she resigned her commission without ceremony or negotiation. She has been very clear with herself that there will not be a third time, under anyone.

The Road to Haven
After resigning, Serratus started making her way south toward Verdant Hold, still recovering from the war with the Chromatic Council, on the reasoning that a place rebuilding from that kind of damage could probably use another capable sword. Passing near Gelderai, she heard from people fleeing the undead crisis pressing against its borders about Haven drifting into position above the city, and about Goodberry specifically, a city whose ruler was reportedly serious about protecting ordinary citizens as a basic function of governing rather than as something said and not meant. That was a more interesting use of herself than one more overstretched warfront, and Serratus has never had trouble changing course when a better option presents itself. She is making her way there now.

Goals & Aspirations

To Find Out If the Reputation Holds
Serratus has heard plenty of cities claim their leaders protect ordinary people. She has served under several of them and resigned from at least one over exactly that gap between claim and practice. Before she commits to anything in Goodberry, she intends to watch closely and judge for herself whether the reputation matches the reality, the same way she'd assess any commander before trusting them with her sword.

To Be Useful Immediately
She has no formal position in Goodberry yet and no contacts to speak of, but Serratus doesn't do well sitting idle, and intends to find some way to make herself useful almost as soon as she's through the gate, whether or not anyone has formally asked her to.

To Serve Somewhere She Doesn't Have to Resign From
Underneath the practical checklist, Serratus is hoping, more than she'd readily admit, that Goodberry turns out to be a place she can commit to fully without eventually hitting the same wall she's hit twice before. She isn't optimistic by nature. She's willing to be proven wrong.

ATTENTION!
Serratus is newly arrived in Goodberry, a D-grade Aasimar Warpriest who resigned her last commission after a commander treated acceptable casualties too casually one time too many. She has no formal position or established relationships in the city yet. She is an extremely capable and dangerous combatant, calm and immediately decisive the instant real danger appears, and her Guiding Star gives her genuine, reliable warning of imminent physical threats to anyone nearby, herself excepted. She has no patience for prophecy talk, requests to bless things, or being treated as a mystic rather than a soldier. She is not cold. She is intensely, immediately protective of ordinary people, and treats that protectiveness as a professional standard rather than a divine calling.
