Humble Beginnings in Uir
Contrary to the lavish origin story he tells most patrons, Nokko wasn't born to a caravan beneath three desert moons. He was abandoned on the doorstep of a struggling tailor's shop in a forgotten corner of Uir, his infernal heritage too obvious to hide. The elderly tailor, a hunched human named Garith, took him in not out of kindness but practicality: those fingers would be useful for fine needlework once the boy grew. Childhood was a blur of needle pricks, fabric dust, and the occasional slap when stitches weren't straight enough. What saved young Nokko wasn't just talent, though he had plenty, but imagination. While his hands worked, his mind wove elaborate tales of who might wear each garment and the adventures they'd have.
Learning the Craft of Transformation
By twelve, Nokko could size a customer with a glance. By fifteen, he was whispering suggestions that transformed simple commissions into statements that elevated the wearer's social standing. Garith worked the boy hard but taught him well. "Thread," he'd mutter, "speaks a language older than words. Learn to listen." When Garith died leaving nothing but debts and a shop in disrepair, seventeen-year-old Nokko found himself with a choice: surrender to the creditors or reinvent himself. Reinvention won. He sold the shop's meager remains, kept only his tools and favorite fabrics, and walked away from the quarter where he'd been known as "the devilkin apprentice."
Rise Through Lysandra's Network
His first triumph came when he spotted a courtesan named Lysandra in the market, wearing finery that hinted at former glory. He approached her boldly, offering a redesign that would recall her best years rather than echo her fading ones. Skeptical but intrigued, Lysandra gave him an hour with the gown. What he returned wasn't just refreshed but reborn, strategic cuts and additions that flattered rather than exposed, colors shifted to complement rather than compete. That night, she received three marriage proposals and an offer to become the mistress of a minor noble. Lysandra took Nokko under her wing, introducing him to her network of courtesans, entertainers, and the nobles who sought their company.
Mastering the Arts of Transformation
Under Lysandra's guidance, Nokko learned that fashion was merely the outermost layer of transformation. He studied music to understand rhythm and harmony, poetry to grasp metaphor and impact, dance to comprehend how fabric moves with the body, and the courtesan's arts to recognize how desire shapes perception. For a decade, he was known simply as "Lysandra's devilkin," the charming creature who could remake anyone with needle, thread, and carefully chosen words. He dressed courtesans, entertainers, and eventually the nobles themselves, each creation accompanied by advice on how to move, speak, and behave in the new skin he'd created for them.
Establishing Independence and The Rolling Belly
When Lysandra retired to the countryside with a besotted merchant prince (wearing a wedding gown of Nokko's design), he emerged fully from her shadow. Now simply "Nokko," he established himself not merely as a tailor but as a catalyst for transformation. His reputation grew beyond clothing as those seeking to reinvent themselves sought him out. He became known for his discretion as much as his flamboyance, the latter serving as perfect cover for the former. The Rolling Belly emerged from his philosophy that joy, unrestrained and unashamed, was what he truly traded in. The establishment became a haven where nobles mixed with commoners, artists with merchants, humans with all manner of other races, and the only unforgivable sin was boredom.
Special Commission and Bloodline Revelation
Two months before his move to Goodberry, Nokko received a special request from Hotaru to visit Emeline, Arties' daughter, after she had been the victim of a disfiguring sword attack. During this commission, Nokko revealed the true extent of his abilities: his bloodline allows him to modify a person's genetic structure on a cellular level, enabling them to look like whatever they want, provided there is enough genetic material to work with. He successfully cured Emeline of her disfigurement and changed her race to Drow Noble per her request. However, this extraordinary ability can only ever affect any person once in their lifetime, making each transformation permanent and precious.
Unexpected Relocation to Goodberry
In early Goldenleaf, Nokko came to visit Goodberry for what was meant to be a brief social call. However, he accidentally became stranded when Arties ported the dimensional city to another planet during his stay. Rather than being distressed by this unexpected turn of events, Nokko found himself charmed by Goodberry's unique nature and the abundance of exotic ingredients available for his culinary experiments. Recognizing his value to the community, Arties purchased him a house within the city, which he now plans to expand and customize to his exacting aesthetic standards. The access to nearly infinite cooking ingredients has convinced him to make Goodberry his permanent home.
