Orphaned in Shadow and Light
Nessin's earliest memories are not of parents or family but of the shadows that sheltered him as an orphaned child in the alleyways of Emberpeak, the volcanic city where his fetchling heritage made him an object of fear and curiosity. Born to fetchling travelers who died in a tunnel collapse while seeking refuge in the city, the infant Nessin was discovered by local authorities and placed in the orphanage where his connection to darkness manifested in unusual ways from his first days. His crib was often found empty, only for the child to be discovered sleeping peacefully in the darkest corner of the room with shadows wrapped around him like protective blankets, a phenomenon that unnerved caretakers and other children alike.
Embracing Solitude and Discovering Purpose
His childhood was marked by isolation as other children and even caretakers found his ghostly appearance and tendency to vanish into shadows deeply unsettling, but rather than suffering under this exclusion, young Nessin embraced solitude and spent countless hours exploring the city's shadowy recesses. By age ten, he could move seamlessly through connected shadows, allowing him to explore parts of Emberpeak forbidden to other children, including the magnificent obsidian spires of the palace itself. It was during one such unauthorized exploration that he witnessed his first formal rapier duel between members of the city guard, the elegant deadliness of the form immediately capturing his imagination and providing him with his first real sense of purpose and direction.
The Shadow Duelist's Unconventional Training
Unable to afford formal training, Nessin began secretly observing dueling practices and military drills, retreating to abandoned corners of the city to replicate the movements with makeshift wooden swords he crafted himself. His natural grace, combined with his shadow abilities, allowed him to develop a unique fighting style that incorporated elements of traditional fencing with unpredictable shadow steps that confused and disoriented opponents. This unorthodox approach caught the attention of Guard Captain Steelvein during a public tournament where sixteen-year-old Nessin, having entered on a dare, defeated three trained guardsmen by seemingly attacking from multiple directions simultaneously, a feat that should have been impossible for any normal fighter.
Finding Belonging Through Service and Dedication
Rather than punishing the youth for his years of trespassing, Captain Steelvein recognized potential in the unusual fetchling and offered him legitimate training in exchange for service in Emberpeak's special shadow patrol, a small unit dedicated to monitoring the city's less accessible areas. Under proper tutelage, Nessin's skills flourished, his rapier technique becoming as refined as his shadow manipulation was instinctive, and his years with the shadow patrol taught him discipline and purpose. This experience transformed an isolated outsider into a dedicated guardian who found belonging through service to the community that had once feared him, though he never truly felt at home in Emberpeak due to the city's constant volcanic glow creating few true shadows and limiting his abilities.
A Decade of Wandering and Searching
After eight years of service, when he began experiencing vivid dreams of distant places where shadows pooled like deep water, Nessin requested a transfer to one of Emberpeak's satellite outposts, beginning a decade-long journey through various settlements. He never stayed more than a year or two in any location, always seeking a place where both his abilities and his unusual appearance might be fully accepted rather than merely tolerated. His wandering eventually brought him to Goodberry, a town whose magical nature and unusual citizens immediately resonated with something deep in his nature, and upon arrival, he felt his abilities strengthen significantly with the shadows seeming more responsive and alive than anywhere he had previously served.
Finding Purpose in Goodberry's Embrace
When he demonstrated his capabilities to Captain Varon during his application to join the town guard, the shadows responded with unprecedented vigor, allowing him to simultaneously exist in three different locations for several seconds, a feat he had never before accomplished. Now as the newest member of Goodberry's guard, Nessin finds himself in the unfamiliar position of being valued precisely for the qualities that once made him an outsider, with Captain Varon specifically assigning him to night patrols and special reconnaissance duties perfectly suited to his abilities. For perhaps the first time, Nessin dares to hope he has found a permanent home, though the intensification of his shadow powers and increasingly vivid dreams of a city beyond the veil of darkness leave him with lingering questions about his true nature and ultimate destiny.
Protecting the Innocent
In the early morning hours of Frostmoon 1, 1304 the full force of the Chromatic Council fell upon the city of Verdant Hold. Thousands died, but the Heaven's Chosen held the city and defeated the council once and for all. The scope of the conflict was larger than expected and bled into Goodberry proper. Thousands of red draconians stormed the Geodegazer Estate and overwhelmed the small force that was there to proctect the citizens and the Geodegazer children. Nessin was one of those asked to stay back and protect the citizens of Goodberry, with the reasoning that his ability to 'poof' in and out of existence in short distances would potentially help get citizens out of trouble quickly. While that ended up being true, and he was able to save nearly a dozen women and children from impending doom, he was not able to do so while watching his own back. When he watched his colleague Thomas go down, he tried to help and never saw the flail coming his way. There was no suffering, at least, as he died upon impact.
Out of the Dark
Nessin Veilstep had been somewhere else. He is certain of this in the way that he is certain of very little, not as a memory but as a weight, the distinct feeling of returning from a place rather than simply waking in one. He opened his eyes in Goodberry's graveyard on Frostnight 2, 1304 and lay still for longer than was strictly necessary, cataloguing the sensation of existing again with the methodical care he brought to everything. The shadows nearby were responding to him already, reaching toward his hands before he had asked them to, the way they always did in Goodberry. Stronger than anywhere he had ever been. He had been afraid, in his last moment, that he would die without ever understanding what that meant. Now he is less afraid and more curious, which is different and better. He does not know where he was, or what the shadow realm makes of a fetchling who passes through it in death, or what it put back when it gave him to the wave that returned him. He sat up, checked that his rapier was where it always was, found it was not because that was not how this worked, and noted that as a problem to be addressed. Then he went to find Captain Varon. If he was back, he was on duty.
