Born to Ride the Currents
Born to the Coralspine Tribe in the vast reef networks near Anice, Neirah showed an early affinity for the tribe's legendary Ray-Riders that marked her as special from a young age. While most young Seafolk were content to learn traditional hunting or gathering roles within the structured hierarchy of tribal life, she spent countless hours observing the scouts as they patrolled the territory astride their massive stingray companions, dreaming of the day she would join their ranks. Her fascination with exploration and movement set her apart from her peers, earning her both admiration for her enthusiasm and frequent reprimands from elders who worried her adventurous spirit would lead her into danger. Her older sister Kelara took on the role of guardian and protector early, trying to keep Neirah's curiosity from getting her killed while secretly proud of her sister's fearless nature.
The Bond with Luna
At the age of twelve, Neirah was chosen by her ray mount in the traditional bonding ceremony that had been practiced by the Coralspine Tribe for generations. The young female ray she named Luna for the distinctive white circular pattern on her back approached Neirah directly during the selection ritual, an immediate and profound connection that the tribal elders recognized as exceptionally strong. Together they quickly became one of the tribe's most promising scout pairs, their ability to move silently through enemy territory and gather intelligence proving invaluable during the increasing tensions with various underwater factions. Luna seemed to understand Neirah's thoughts before she could even give commands, and their bond grew so deep that Neirah sometimes joked they shared the same heart. For eight years they were inseparable, exploring the depths together and protecting their people from threats both known and hidden.
A Scout's Reputation
Neirah's keen eyes and quick thinking helped her tribe avoid several potential conflicts through her scouting missions, though she also saw her share of combat when diplomacy failed and violence became necessary. During a particularly dangerous skirmish with deep-sea raiders attempting to claim Coralspine territory, she and Luna managed to lead the attackers into a trap using their intimate knowledge of local currents to confuse and separate the enemy forces. This tactical victory earned her the nickname "The Swift Ray" among her people and cemented her reputation as one of the tribe's most valuable scouts. Yet despite her accomplishments and the respect they brought, Neirah often found herself restless within the confines of tribal expectations and traditional roles. She was particularly fascinated by the surface world, taking every opportunity to observe coastal settlements from just beneath the waves, her curiosity about land dwellers growing stronger with each stolen glimpse of their strange and captivating way of life.
The Explorer's Heart
Neirah's frequent unauthorized expeditions to watch the surface world became something of a legend within the tribe, with Kelara regularly having to track down her wayward sister and drag her back to their territory. These adventures were not born of rebellion but of genuine wonder and curiosity about the world beyond their ocean home, a desire to understand the connection between sea and land that most of her people had abandoned generations ago. Her occasional interactions with surface dwellers, particularly those involving attractive women she encountered near the shores, earned her both reprimands from tribal elders who worried about drawing unwanted attention and a reputation as something of a flirt among the younger Seafolk who admired her boldness. She collected shiny objects from shipwrecks, not for their monetary value but because each piece represented a story from the world above, a connection to lives lived in sunlight and open air rather than beneath the waves.
The Night Everything Ended
When the unending wave of undead descended upon the Coralspine Tribe's territory in late 1303, Neirah was on a scouting patrol near the surface with Luna, her curiosity once again drawing her toward the boundary between sea and land. The attack came without warning, the mindless tide of reanimated sea creatures and drowned sailors moving with terrible purpose through the depths, killing every living thing in their path. By the time Neirah realized what was happening and raced back toward her home, the massacre had already begun, the water filled with blood and the screams of her people echoing through the darkness. Luna fought with desperate fury to get Neirah through the undead horde, using her massive body to shield her rider from attacks while taking wounds that would have killed any normal creature. They managed to reach Kelara, who was fighting a desperate last stand to protect what remained of their tribe, but Luna had sustained too many injuries, her lifeblood darkening the water around them as she made one final push to bring Neirah to safety before her strength failed completely.
Survivors and Guilt
In the aftermath of the attack, with Luna dead and their entire tribe massacred, Neirah and Kelara found themselves alone in a devastated wasteland that had once been their thriving home. Neirah's grief was compounded by crushing guilt, the knowledge that if she had not been on one of her unauthorized surface expeditions when the attack began, she might have been killed with the others, and that Luna had died specifically to save her from the consequences of her own curiosity. The practical reason for their survival, that Neirah's wanderlust had kept them near the surface when the undead passed through the depths below, offered no comfort against the weight of being the only two left alive from a tribe that had existed for countless generations. Kelara's protective instincts went into overdrive, and Neirah found herself having to manage not only her own trauma but also her sister's intense need to keep her safe from any further harm, a suffocating attention born of love and fear of losing the only family she had left.
A Surface World Refuge
With nowhere else to turn, the sisters made their way to Goodberry, a place they had visited briefly after meeting Arties and her companions during one of Neirah's previous surface explorations. The irony was not lost on Neirah that the surface world she had dreamed of exploring was now her only refuge, that her curiosity about life above the waves had led them to the one place where they might find sanctuary after losing everything below them. The journey was emotionally devastating, forcing them to leave behind the ocean depths that had been their entire world and adapt to life in a surface dwelling settlement where everything from the air to the customs felt alien and wrong. Neirah tried to maintain her natural optimism and curiosity during this transition, but the trauma of the massacre and Luna's death cast shadows over every new experience, turning what should have been exciting discoveries into painful reminders of what she had lost.
Finding Purpose in Protection
The aftermath of the Battle for Verdant Hold opened Neirah's eyes to the larger context of the war that had claimed so many lives across Xeres, including her own people. Seeing the devastation wrought by the Chromatic Council and understanding that her tribe's destruction was part of a much broader conflict gave her grief a framework that made it slightly more bearable. When the opportunity came to join Goodberry's city guard alongside Kelara, Neirah embraced it as a chance to do something meaningful with her survival, to protect others from the kind of senseless destruction that had taken everything from her. The work is different from her scouting days with Luna, patrolling streets instead of ocean currents and watching for surface threats rather than deep sea dangers, but the fundamental purpose remains the same. She tries to bring her natural curiosity and optimism to her new role, attempting to be the kind of guard who helps people rather than just enforcing rules, though the darkness of her trauma sometimes makes it difficult to maintain that cheerful facade.
Choosing to Live
In the months since joining the guard, Neirah has made a conscious choice to honor Luna's sacrifice and her tribe's memory by continuing to live as fully as possible despite her grief. She still collects small treasures and beautiful objects, though now each one reminds her of what she lost as much as it brings her joy. She still tries to make connections with people she meets, particularly attractive women whose smiles can temporarily chase away the shadows in her heart, though she guards against forming attachments too deep for fear of experiencing more loss. She watches sunsets from Goodberry's walls with the same wonder she once felt watching them from beneath the waves, finding small moments of beauty in a world that has proven itself capable of terrible cruelty. Her relationship with Kelara remains her anchor, and she works hard to show her sister that their survival was worth Luna's sacrifice, that they can build new lives that honor rather than dishonor those who died. It is not the carefree existence she once dreamed of, but it is life, and after witnessing so much death, she has learned that simply surviving and finding moments of joy is itself a form of victory.
Rebuilding
Shortly after the battle for Verdant Hold in Frostmoon of 1304, the sisters decided to officially become part of Goodberry as citizens. Seeing a need to be able to support people like Kelara and Neirah, though, Queen Arties created a new expansion to her estate... a 25-mile by 25-mile space that was entirely aquatic she called Tidecaller's Refuge. Neirah and Kelara discussed moving to that large body of water as agents of control for Goodberry. Since Kelara was pregnant with Mace's child, the decision was easy and unanimous. On Goldenleaf 26, her sister gave birth to a baby girl Sharkwere like her father. Life changes quickly, it seems.
