Physical Description
Appearance
In his human form, Mace is a powerfully built man with a clean bald head and deeply tanned skin that speaks to years spent working under the ocean sun. His massive frame carries the kind of muscle that comes from hauling nets, climbing rigging, and handling the physical demands of life at sea. His hybrid form transforms him into a terrifying shark-human hybrid with steel-grey skin, powerful muscles that bulge with aquatic strength, and an intimidating presence that can freeze enemies in their tracks. Despite his imposing physical presence, there's often a hesitant quality to his movements, as if he's constantly questioning whether he has the right to take up space.
Unique Characteristics
Mace bears countless scars from his time as a sailor and his years under Black-Eyed-Bill's command, visible even in his human form as a testament to the violence he both witnessed and participated in. His eyes remain the same in both forms - black and intense like those of a shark, holding depths that reflect both his predatory nature and his deep-seated guilt. When agitated or stressed, he unconsciously bares his teeth in a distinctly shark-like manner, a habit that often makes others uncomfortable despite his generally peaceful intentions. His hands, scarred from rope work and combat, are surprisingly gentle when he's not fighting, as if he's consciously trying to counteract the violence they've known.

I'm not smart enough to know if this is right... but I'm strong enough to protect those who are.
Used to think muscle was all that mattered. Turns out knowing when NOT to use it... that's the hard part.
Bill taught me to bite first, think never. Takes longer to unlearn that than it did to learn it in the first place.

Background & History
Born to the Sea and Cursed Blood
Born into his lycanthropy rather than cursed with it later in life, Mace Tidecaller spent his early years learning to control his powerful shark form while working as a sailor on various merchant vessels. His immense strength and natural aquatic abilities made him an invaluable crew member, capable of diving to retrieve lost cargo, swimming for hours without tiring, and providing underwater ship repairs that would normally require dry dock. Despite his imposing presence and obvious usefulness, Mace's self-doubting nature led him to consistently downplay his contributions, believing himself to be nothing more than useful muscle rather than recognizing his intelligence and moral instincts that often guided him toward the right course of action.
The Devil's Bargain That Damned His Soul
Mace's life changed dramatically when his merchant vessel was attacked by the notorious pirate Black-Eyed-Bill and his crew, who showed no mercy to those who resisted their raid. Rather than watch his fellow crew members be slaughtered like cattle, Mace made the desperate decision to agree to serve under Bill's command, believing that his cooperation might spare at least some of the innocent sailors' lives. This choice, born from a desire to protect others, would become the source of his deepest shame as he spent the next two years witnessing countless atrocities while serving as Bill's primary enforcer. Though he was physically powerful enough to challenge Bill's authority and potentially end the reign of terror, Mace's crippling self-doubt and fear of making things worse kept him trapped in a cycle of complicity, limiting himself to small acts of mercy when possible while watching greater evils unfold.
The Bandit King's Descent into Darkness
During Bill's ill-fated raid on the occupied city of Grafton, most of the pirate crew was decimated in fierce fighting that left the survivors scattered and demoralized. In the aftermath of this defeat, Bill declared himself "Bandit King of the Thornwood," leading his remaining followers in a campaign of terror against travelers and isolated settlements that surpassed even his previous cruelties. As Bill descended further into madness and sadism, accumulating unwilling concubines and torturing prisoners for entertainment, Mace found himself in an impossible position where leaving might doom those he protected while staying made him complicit in increasingly horrific acts. Throughout this dark period, he used his position to quietly protect as many of Bill's victims and underlings as he could, but the weight of his inability to stop the greater evil grew heavier with each passing day.
Liberation and the Choice of Redemption
When liberation finally came at the hands of Arties and her companions, with Robert De La Rosa delivering the killing shot that ended Black-Eyed-Bill's reign of terror, Mace found himself facing an unexpected opportunity for redemption that he had never dared to hope for. Rather than flee to avoid potential retribution or continue his life of enforced piracy under a new master, he made the conscious choice to join the growing settlement of Goodberry, hoping to use his strength in service of a worthy cause for the first time in years. This decision represented not just a change of location but a fundamental shift in his understanding of his own agency and moral responsibility, as he began to believe that he might be capable of more than just following orders and protecting people in small, secret ways.
Learning to Trust His Own Moral Compass
Now serving as part of Goodberry's defensive force, Mace struggles daily to overcome his ingrained self-doubt while learning to trust his own moral compass, which has proven to be more reliable than he ever believed possible. Though he still prefers to follow orders rather than give them, believing himself too simple-minded for complex decision-making, he's slowly discovering that his perceived simplicity often allows him to see right and wrong more clearly than those he once considered his intellectual betters. His journey of atonement has only just begun, but for the first time in years, he feels like he's swimming in the right direction rather than being carried along by currents beyond his control. The nightmares of his past still haunt him, but they're increasingly balanced by small victories where his strength serves to protect rather than intimidate, where his presence brings safety rather than fear.
Growing the Family
On Frostmoon 1, 1304, war broke out between the Southern Coalition and the Chromatic Council with the final, feverish battle taking place at Verdant Hold. The Coalition won the day and destroyed the council forever. A few months after the war, Kelara gave birth to Neruna, her daughter. Neruna took after Mace as a sharkwere. Seeing a need to be able to support people like Kelara and Neirah, Queen Arties created a new expansion to her estate... a 25-mile by 25-mile space that was entirely aquatic she called Tidecaller's Refuge. Neirah and Kelara discussed moving to that large body of water as agents of control for Goodberry and eventually compelled Mace to do the same, even though it meant leaving the first real friends he'd had in decades. Together the three swim the depths of the Refuge, keeping aquatic life safe and simple as they teach Neruna about the world around them.
Goals
Atoning for Past Inactions Through Service
Mace's primary goal is to atone for the years he spent as Black-Eyed-Bill's enforcer by using his strength and skills exclusively in service of protecting innocent people and supporting just causes. He seeks to balance the scales of his past by preventing as much suffering as he once allowed through his inaction, understanding that he cannot undo the harm he witnessed but hoping to prevent future tragedies through decisive action. His aspiration is to reach a point where his protective deeds outweigh his past complicity, not in some cosmic ledger but in his own ability to look at himself without shame and to sleep without nightmares of the people he failed to save when he had the power to help them.
Learning to Trust His Own Judgment
Beyond his desire for redemption, Mace seeks to overcome the crippling self-doubt that has prevented him from taking initiative and making important decisions when they matter most. He wants to develop confidence in his own moral compass and intelligence, recognizing that his perceived simplicity often allows him to see ethical situations more clearly than those who overthink complex moral questions. His goal is to reach a point where he can act decisively to protect others without waiting for permission or guidance from authority figures, understanding that sometimes the right action requires immediate response rather than careful deliberation. He hopes to become the kind of person who can lead when necessary while remaining humble enough to follow when appropriate.
Building a Legacy of Protection Rather Than Fear
Mace's ultimate aspiration is to ensure that when people remember him, they think of safety and protection rather than intimidation and violence, transforming his reputation from that of a feared enforcer to a trusted guardian. He wants to use his imposing presence and formidable abilities to create environments where the vulnerable can feel secure rather than threatened, where his strength serves as a deterrent to those who would harm others rather than as a tool of oppression. His vision is to become so associated with justice and protection that potential troublemakers think twice before acting, not out of fear of retribution but out of respect for the peace and safety he represents. He hopes to prove that even those with dark pasts can choose to become forces for good, inspiring other former criminals to seek redemption through service.

⚔️ Combat Warning
Despite his gentle nature and moral reservations about violence, Mace's sharkwere heritage makes him an exceptionally dangerous combatant, particularly in his hybrid form where he gains massive size and predatory instincts. His years as Black-Eyed-Bill's enforcer taught him efficient methods of intimidation and violence that he can call upon when protecting innocents, though he now applies these skills with careful restraint. His greatest fear is losing control of his shark nature, but when truly threatened or when protecting others, he can transform into a terrifying force of aquatic fury. Those who mistake his self-doubt for weakness will discover that his moral compass guides his actions, not his capabilities in combat.
