Tidal Well System

Tidal Well System

Prerequisite: Freshwater Cistern I
This upgrade creates a series of carefully positioned wells that tap into the freshwater lens beneath the sandbar, providing a reliable source of groundwater that naturally filters through sand and coral.

Description

The Tidal Well System exploits a phenomenon well known to the Vaitafe: beneath every sandbar of sufficient size exists a lens of freshwater floating atop the denser saltwater that saturates the deeper sand. This freshwater lens forms from accumulated rainfall that percolates down through the sand, where it remains suspended above the heavier seawater in a delicate equilibrium. The wells are positioned at the highest points of the Spine Bars where this lens is thickest, each one carefully dug to penetrate just deep enough to reach the fresh layer without breaking through into the brackish zone below.

Each well is lined with fitted stones mortared with the traditional shell-and-coral mixture, creating a stable shaft approximately three feet in diameter that descends eight to twelve feet below the surface. The upper portion of each well rises two feet above ground level, crowned with a carved stone rim that prevents sand and debris from washing in during storms. A fitted wooden cover protects the opening when not in use, its surface carved with wave patterns and the stylized image of a diving cormorant, the bird the Vaitafe associate with finding hidden water. The covers are hinged with leather straps and can be secured with wooden pegs during severe weather.

The water-drawing apparatus consists of a simple but elegant system of carved wooden buckets attached to braided coconut-fiber ropes that pass over a wooden crossbar mounted on two carved posts. These posts, standing six feet tall on either side of each well, are carved with traditional protective figures and serve both functional and spiritual purposes. The crossbar is fitted with a wooden pulley carved from dense ironwood, its smooth surface allowing the rope to glide easily as workers lower and raise the bucket. A small platform of fitted stones surrounds each well, providing stable footing for those drawing water and allowing any spillage to drain away rather than contaminating the well.

The wells require careful management to maintain the delicate balance of the freshwater lens. Drawing too much water too quickly can cause saltwater to cone upward into the fresh layer, contaminating the supply. The Vaitafe have developed a rotation system where each well is used for only a portion of each day, allowing the lens to recover between drawings. Carved markers near each well indicate the maximum safe draw for different tide conditions, as the lens thickness varies with the tidal cycle. During extreme low tides, when the lens is at its thinnest, drawing is restricted to prevent contamination. A dedicated well-tender monitors water quality by taste-testing samples from each well daily, immediately closing any well that shows signs of salt intrusion until the lens can recover.

Benefits

The Tidal Well System generates 3 Prestige, demonstrating the settlement's sophisticated understanding of hydrology and their ability to extract resources from the challenging environment. The wells provide approximately 200 gallons of freshwater per day when properly managed, supplementing other water sources and providing crucial backup during dry seasons when cisterns run low. The naturally filtered groundwater is exceptionally pure, granting those who drink primarily from the wells a +1 bonus on Fortitude saves against disease for as long as they remain in the settlement. Additionally, the presence of multiple independent water sources grants the settlement advantage on any checks related to surviving drought or water contamination events.
