Strategy House

Strategy House

Prerequisite: Palisade Walls
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The interior is dominated by a massive central table carved from a single slab of ironwood, its surface worn smooth by years of use and measuring twenty feet long by eight feet wide. This table serves as the heart of all defensive planning, its surface currently bearing a detailed relief map of The Tidal Expanse and surrounding waters. The map is a masterwork of Vaitafe craftsmanship, with the Spine Bars represented by raised sections of carved wood, tidal channels indicated by channels filled with blue-tinted resin, and the shifting sandbars marked with moveable wooden pieces that can be repositioned as the landscape changes with each king tide. Miniature carved figures represent defensive positions, enemy forces, and the settlement's war canoes, allowing commanders to visualize tactical scenarios and test different defensive responses.

The walls of the Strategy House are lined with carefully organized information vital to the settlement's defense. Large panels of smoothed wood display tide charts meticulously carved and updated monthly, showing the predicted high and low water marks for every day of the year based on the complex interactions of Xeres' three moons. Weather pattern charts track seasonal storm frequencies, helping commanders anticipate when the settlement might be most vulnerable. Another wall features a weapons inventory board with pegs and markers tracking the current state of the arsenal, how many warriors are trained and available, and the readiness status of the war canoe fleet. Historical battle records carved into wooden tablets hang in place of honor, preserving the tactical lessons learned from past conflicts so that future commanders can learn from both victories and defeats.

Comfortable seating surrounds the central table in the form of low benches with woven cushions, arranged to allow all participants in a war council to see the map clearly while maintaining the circular equality important to Vaitafe decision-making traditions. The Duke sits at the head position, but the circular arrangement ensures all voices can be heard and considered. Oil lamps mounted on iron stands provide bright, steady illumination for night councils, their light reflecting off polished copper mirrors positioned to eliminate shadows from the map table. A small side room accessible through a curtained doorway serves as secure storage for sensitive documents, captured enemy maps, and detailed intelligence reports from scouts and traders.

The Strategy House also functions as the settlement's tactical nerve center during actual crises. When threats emerge, the Duke and his war council convene here to coordinate the response, dispatching runners to defensive positions with orders based on their tactical assessment of the situation. The building's central location allows messages from watchmen's platforms, the alarm drum tower, and war canoe beach to reach the commanders quickly. Inside these walls, commanders debate whether to flood the tidal gates, where to concentrate defenders, when to launch the war canoes, and whether to sound the evacuation drums. The Strategy House transforms raw information into coherent defensive strategy, ensuring that The Tidal Expanse responds to threats not with panic but with disciplined, coordinated action guided by careful planning and tactical expertise.

Benefits

The Strategy House provides a +4 bonus to all Defense checks made to protect the settlement, as coordinated planning allows more effective use of defensive resources. The Duke and military commanders can study the tide charts and tactical maps to predict optimal defensive positions, granting a +2 bonus to initiative checks when the settlement is attacked. Once per month, the war council can conduct a full defensive drill that identifies weaknesses and improves responses, granting all defenders a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls for the following week. The detailed record-keeping and tactical planning generates 5 Prestige, demonstrating the Duke's wisdom and the settlement's sophisticated approach to military matters.
