Palisade Walls

Palisade Walls

Prerequisite: None
This upgrade establishes sturdy wooden defensive walls around the settlement, adorned with traditional Vaitafe guardian carvings that serve both practical and spiritual protection.

Description

The palisade consists of thick vertical logs, each roughly ten inches in diameter, set deep into the elevated sandbar foundation and bound together with reinforced rope woven from dried kelp fibers and strengthened with preservative resins. The tops of the logs are sharpened to points, creating an intimidating barrier that discourages climbing attempts. At regular intervals, the wall features sturdy platforms accessible by interior ladders, allowing guards to patrol along the ramparts and maintain watchful vigilance over the surrounding tidal flats.

What truly sets these walls apart are the magnificent guardian figures carved into select posts throughout the palisade. Crafted in the traditional Vaitafe style, these imposing tikanga (guardian spirits) feature bold geometric patterns, sweeping curves, and fierce expressions meant to ward off evil spirits and intimidate mortal enemies alike. The largest carvings, standing at the main gates, depict Tangaroa (the ocean guardian) and Maui (the trickster hero), each rendered with intricate detail that showcases the artistic heritage of the water-dwelling people. The eyes of these guardians are inlaid with polished abalone shell that catches the light, creating the unsettling impression that they watch all who approach.

The main gate is a double-door construction reinforced with iron bands, featuring a heavy crossbeam that can be quickly dropped into place during emergencies. Smaller gates at strategic points around the perimeter allow for quick sorties or evacuations if needed. The gates themselves are carved with protective symbols and patterns representing the flowing water, coiling waves, and leaping fish that define Vaitafe culture and connection to the sea.

Within the walls, torches mounted in iron sconces provide illumination during the night watches, their flames reflected in the tide pools beyond. The entire structure radiates a sense of security and cultural identity, transforming the settlement from a vulnerable cluster of buildings into a true fortified community. The walls stand not merely as physical barriers but as declarations of permanence and strength, showing that the Vaitafe people have claimed this shifting landscape as their own and will defend it with determination and ancestral power.
