Description
Ancient vortex stones carved with spiraling Polynesian patterns are embedded throughout the settlement's harbor, their surfaces gleaming with perpetual moisture and pulsing with tidal magic. These sacred artifacts channel the raw power of Tangaroa, god of the sea, focusing the settlement's collective will into devastating aquatic weapons.
When activated, the stones create massive whirlpools that span 60 feet across, their spinning waters reaching depths of 30 feet or more. The vortexes form with terrifying speed, the ocean surface suddenly collapsing inward as currents accelerate to bone-crushing velocities, creating a funnel of destruction that can appear anywhere within 500 feet of the settlement.
The vortex master, a revered kahuna who has bonded with the ocean's deepest mysteries, stands atop the settlement's highest platform during activation. Through ritual chants and precise gestures, they direct the placement and intensity of each whirlpool, their eyes glowing with the same blue-green light that emanates from the vortex stones.
Enemy vessels caught in these supernatural maelstroms face almost certain destruction, their hulls splintering under the immense rotational forces while crews are dragged into the churning depths. Even the most experienced sailors find their skills useless against such overwhelming aquatic fury, making this defense one of the most feared magical protections in all the island chains.
Benefits
Create a whirlpool 60 feet in diameter anywhere within 500 feet of the settlement. Vessels caught in the vortex must make a DC 22 Profession (sailor) check or be pulled in, taking 6d6 points of damage per round.
