Description
The Tide Throne stands as a monument to Vaitafe mastery over the sea, carved from a single massive coral formation and reinforced with the sacred bones of ancient whales. Its surface bears intricate carvings depicting the phases of Hina, the moon goddess, whose silver light activates the throne's power. Positioned at the settlement's edge where land meets water, the throne rises from a platform of polished black volcanic stone, surrounded by pools that reflect the moon's phases.
Only a trained Tide Master may occupy this sacred seat, individuals who have spent decades learning the ancient chants and rituals passed down through Vaitafe generations. These masters undergo rigorous training in lunar astronomy, ocean currents, and the sacred songs that resonate with Hina's power. The position is both revered and feared, as the responsibility of controlling such primal forces weighs heavily upon the chosen.
When activated, the throne allows its occupant to manipulate tidal forces within a mile radius of the settlement. The Tide Master can advance or delay natural tides by several hours, hold water levels steady against nature's pull, or create devastating surges that crash against enemies. The throne's power flows through ancient ley lines beneath the ocean floor, channeling Hina's divine influence over the waters.
However, this power comes with severe limitations and dangers. Overuse can cause catastrophic backlash, potentially drowning the settlement or stranding it permanently above the tide line. The throne demands respect for natural cycles - excessive manipulation angers Hina herself, who may withdraw her blessing entirely. Masters who abuse this power often find themselves consumed by the very waters they sought to control, their bodies claimed by Tangaroa as payment for their hubris.
Benefits
The Tide Master can advance or delay natural tides by up to 4 hours within a 1-mile radius of the settlement. Once per day, they can hold the tide at its current level for up to 2 hours, preventing natural ebb and flow. Three times per day, the master can create a localized tidal surge in a 30-foot cone, dealing 4d6 points of bludgeoning damage to all creatures in the area (Reflex DC 18 for half). All enemies attempting to swim in the settlement's waters suffer a -4 penalty to Swim checks as the currents work against them. The settlement gains +8 Prestige from this legendary display of power over the ocean itself.
