Leviathan Pact

Leviathan Pact

Prerequisite: Tangaroa's Blessing, Shark Swarm Summons
A sacred covenant with an ancient leviathan who serves as the settlement's ultimate guardian, dwelling in the deep waters and answering calls for aid against existential threats.

Description

Te Taniwha Nui, the Great Sea Serpent, is older than the oldest Vaitafe legends. This colossal creature measures over three hundred feet from snout to tail, its scales the deep blue-black of the ocean trenches, its eyes glowing with an intelligence that predates human civilization. The pact was sealed when Duke Karthos dove alone into the deepest waters, carrying offerings blessed by every priest in the settlement, and spoke the words of binding that his ancestors had preserved for generations against the day when such power might be needed.

The leviathan does not dwell within the Tidal Expanse itself; its bulk would displace the waters entirely. Instead, Te Taniwha Nui rests in a cavern beneath the dimensional boundary, connected to the settlement through mystical bonds that allow it to sense threats and respond to summons. When called, the creature rises through the waters like a living earthquake, its passage creating waves that can swamp enemy vessels before it even arrives. The sight of its massive form breaching the surface has ended more than one potential invasion before a single blow was struck.

The pact requires regular tribute: the finest fish from each catch, pearls of exceptional quality, and songs of praise performed at the water's edge during each full moon. In return, Te Taniwha Nui provides not only protection but wisdom, for the creature has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations and carries memories of events long forgotten by mortal historians. Those brave enough to swim down to commune with the leviathan return with knowledge that cannot be found in any library.

The leviathan's presence affects the waters around the settlement in subtle ways. Predators that might threaten fishermen sense the greater predator's territory and stay away. Schools of fish seem drawn to the protected waters, as if seeking shelter beneath the serpent's watchful gaze. Even the weather patterns shift slightly, storms veering around the area as if reluctant to disturb the ancient creature's rest.

Benefits

Once per month, the Duke may summon Te Taniwha Nui to defend the settlement. The leviathan fights as a CR 20 creature with devastating physical attacks and the ability to create tsunamis. Its mere presence grants all defenders a +4 morale bonus on attack rolls and saves against fear. Between summons, the leviathan's territorial presence reduces hostile sea creature encounters by 75% and increases fish yields by 20%. Once per year, a character may commune with the leviathan to gain the benefit of legend lore on any topic related to the sea. +10 Prestige.
