Description
The communion chamber lies beneath the Wharenui, accessible through a hidden passage known only to the Duke and the settlement's highest priests. The circular room is carved from living coral that glows with soft phosphorescence, its walls inscribed with the names of every chief and elder who has led the Vaitafe people since the first canoes touched these shores. At the chamber's center rests a pool of perfectly still water that reflects not the ceiling above but an endless starfield.
Those who wish to commune with the ancestors must fast for three days and undergo ritual purification before descending into the chamber. The seeker kneels at the pool's edge and speaks the name of the ancestor whose wisdom they seek. If the request is deemed worthy, the water ripples and the ancestor's face appears, their voice emerging from the depths as clearly as if they stood in the room. The communion can last for hours, with the ancestor answering questions, offering advice, and sharing memories of their own time among the living.
The ancestors who respond are not mere echoes or recordings but the actual spirits of the departed, drawn temporarily from their rest in the spirit realm. They retain their personalities, their biases, and their limitations; an ancestor who was foolish in life does not become wise in death. The most sought-after spirits are those of legendary chiefs whose wisdom guided the tribe through its greatest challenges, though even humble elders sometimes offer insights that the great leaders overlooked.
The communion chamber cannot be used frivolously. The ancestors grow weary of trivial questions and may refuse to appear if summoned too frequently or for unworthy purposes. The priests who maintain the chamber keep careful records of each communion, ensuring that the privilege is not abused and that the spirits of the departed are treated with proper respect.
