Ancestor Spirits

Ancestor Spirits

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

Once established, the ancestor spirits maintain a watchful but invisible presence throughout the settlement. Most of the time, their existence is felt rather than seen: a sudden confidence in the face of danger, an intuition about the right course of action, or the sensation of being watched over by benevolent guardians. The carved posts and panels throughout the settlement, particularly those in the Wharenaui and on the Marae, seem to carry an additional weight of presence. Residents report dreams of long-dead relatives offering advice, and children speak of kind invisible companions who guide them away from danger near the water's edge.

When serious threats approach the settlement, the ancestors manifest in spectacular fashion. The carved panels throughout the Tidal Expanse begin to glow with that distinctive blue-green luminescence, and from this light, translucent figures emerge. These spirit forms appear as they did in their prime: powerful warriors bearing traditional weapons, wise chiefs adorned in ceremonial regalia, skilled navigators holding carved staffs, and legendary defenders whose names are still spoken with reverence. They materialize standing upon the waters themselves, their feet finding purchase where the living would sink, their forms slightly transparent but clearly defined, shimmering with an inner light that makes them visible even in darkness. Traditional moko patterns glow on their faces and bodies, and their eyes burn with purpose and protective fury.

The spirits move with supernatural grace and speed, unhindered by the tides that dominate mortal movement through the settlement. They can walk across the deepest channels at high tide, move through structures without opening doors, and appear suddenly wherever defense is needed most. In combat, they wield weapons that, while spectral in appearance, strike with very real force against enemies. Their traditional war cries, the haunting calls that once struck fear into the hearts of their tribe's enemies, echo across the waters with a volume and resonance that no living throat could produce. The psychological impact on invaders is devastating, as they find themselves facing not just the living defenders but the accumulated might of generations of Vaitafe warriors whose skills have been honed by centuries in the spirit realm.

The spirits remain manifested for as long as danger threatens, fighting alongside the living with coordinated precision that speaks to their deep connection with the settlement and its people. They cannot venture beyond the settlement's established boundaries, as their connection is tied to the sacred spaces where offerings have been made and ceremonies performed. When the threat is ended, they do not simply vanish but fade gradually, each spirit pausing to acknowledge their living descendants with gestures of pride and encouragement before dissolving back into the ethereal light that returns to the carved posts and panels. The entire settlement feels blessed and protected in the wake of such manifestations, strengthened by the tangible proof that their ancestors watch over them and will answer when called. The magic maintains itself through the spiritual connection of the living community, growing stronger as more residents contribute their faith and respect through regular offerings and adherence to traditional practices.

Benefits

The Ancestor Spirits generate 10 Prestige, representing the settlement's powerful connection to the spirit realm and its ability to call upon supernatural guardians. When the settlement is attacked or faces significant danger, 2d6 ancestor spirits automatically manifest to defend the community. These spirits have statistics equivalent to 7th-level fighters with the ghost template, wielding spectral versions of traditional Vaitafe weapons. They fight with perfect coordination, granting all living defenders within 60 feet a +3 morale bonus on attack rolls, damage rolls, and saving throws against fear. The spirits can see invisible creatures and are immune to mind-affecting effects, making them ideal guardians against both physical and magical threats. Additionally, the constant subtle presence of the ancestors grants all residents a +2 bonus on Sense Motive checks and Wisdom saving throws, as the spirits whisper warnings and guidance. Once per month, the Duke can perform a ceremony to specifically call upon the wisdom of a particular ancestor, gaining the benefit of a commune spell focused on tribal history, ocean knowledge, or matters of defense and strategy. The spirits' manifestation capability recharges at dawn following any use.
