Trader's Clearing

Prerequisite: Tithe Barn
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Trader's Clearing occupies a naturally level area near the settlement's edge, where Autumn's Edge transitions into the deeper forest. This location was chosen deliberately, positioned for easy access by both residents and visiting merchants while remaining sheltered beneath the protective canopy of mature maple and oak trees. The site itself spans roughly eighty feet across, providing ample room for multiple vendors to set up their wares without feeling cramped, yet intimate enough that the space maintains a welcoming, community-focused atmosphere rather than the impersonal bustle of a large city market.

The ground has been carefully prepared to serve its commercial purpose while respecting the living forest around it. The natural forest floor was cleared of undergrowth and leaf litter, then leveled and surfaced with a mixture of packed earth and fine gravel that drains well during rain yet remains firm and clean underfoot. This surface is swept daily to maintain its appearance and prevent mud from forming in wet weather. Around the perimeter, the original soil and moss have been left undisturbed, creating a soft, natural border that helps the clearing feel integrated into its woodland setting rather than carved out in opposition to it.

Permanent structures give the clearing its commercial character and functionality. A series of sturdy wooden stalls line the clearing's edges, each one constructed from fallen timber that has been carefully selected, shaped, and treated to resist weather. These stalls feature flat counter surfaces at comfortable working height, overhead canopies woven from bark and broad leaves to provide shade and rain protection, and storage compartments underneath where merchants can secure their goods overnight or during slow periods. The stalls are spaced to allow customers to browse comfortably while giving each merchant adequate space to display their wares and negotiate with buyers.

At the clearing's center stands a large wooden notice board, prominently positioned and easily visible from all directions. This board serves multiple functions for the market community. Merchants post notices of goods they seek to buy or sell, citizens advertise services they offer or request, announcements of special sales or rare items draw attention, and the settlement's official proclamations regarding trade regulations or upcoming market events are displayed. The board is maintained by the Market Master, who ensures old notices are removed and new ones properly displayed, preventing the clutter and confusion that undermines effective communication.

Supporting features enhance the clearing's utility and comfort. A covered well just outside the main trading area provides fresh water for drinking, washing, and cleanup. Stone benches positioned around the clearing's edge offer rest for weary merchants and customers, with some benches placed in sunlit spots that warm quickly in cool weather and others positioned in deeper shade for hot days. A small storage shed built from woven branches and bark houses market equipment such as scales, measuring tools, tarpaulins, and rope that merchants can borrow as needed. Security is maintained by a combination of the Market Master's vigilance and a dedicated guard who ensures fair dealing, prevents theft, and settles disputes before they escalate into conflicts.
