Description
The Barkweaver's Studio sits nestled against the trunk of a massive oak tree at the edge of Autumn's Edge, where the forest meets the settlement proper. The structure itself is a testament to the craft it houses, built entirely from woven bark panels and stripped branches that have been carefully treated and shaped without the use of metal fasteners. The exterior walls feature intricate patterns of overlapping bark strips in varying shades of brown and gray, creating a beautiful patchwork that blends seamlessly with the surrounding forest.
Inside, the studio is surprisingly spacious and filled with natural light that filters through windows framed with living willow branches. The main work area features multiple sturdy tables crafted from thick bark slabs, their surfaces worn smooth by years of use. Along the walls, orderly racks hold coils of prepared fiber in every conceivable texture and thickness, from gossamer-thin strands suitable for delicate weaving to thick, rope-like cords used for structural work. Bundles of bark in various stages of preparation hang from the rafters, organized by tree species and flexibility.
One corner of the studio houses the preparation area, where fresh bark is soaked in large stone basins filled with water from the Crystal Streams. The soaking process softens the bark and makes it pliable for weaving and shaping. Nearby, drying racks display strips of bark in various states of cure, each carefully monitored to achieve the perfect balance between flexibility and strength. The air here carries the pleasant, earthy scent of wet bark and forest growth.
The opposite side of the studio serves as the crafting area, where artisans work at specialized benches equipped with an array of bone and wooden tools. Smoothing stones, splitting wedges carved from antler, and fiber combs made from stripped branches line the workspaces. Several partially completed projects are visible at any given time: baskets in mid-weave, bark containers being shaped around wooden forms, cordage being twisted on traditional drop spindles, and fiber mats in various stages of completion.
A small display area near the entrance showcases finished works, demonstrating the range and quality of items the studio produces. Waterproof bark containers with fitted lids, delicately woven baskets strong enough to carry heavy loads, decorative wall hangings depicting forest scenes, practical rope and cordage of various thicknesses, and even bark-cloth garments treated to be both durable and surprisingly comfortable. The studio represents the perfect marriage of ancient forest crafts and the needs of a growing settlement.
