Amberworker's Shop

Prerequisite: Trader's Clearing
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Amberworker's Shop stands at the edge of ancient pine and fir trees that produce fine resin with excellent clarity and golden color. The building is twenty five feet square with two stories. The lower level contains the workshop and retail space while the upper level holds storage for raw materials and finished goods along with a small office for the Master Amberworker to design pieces and maintain records.

The exterior walls are honey colored oak timber with decorative elements that show the shop's purpose. Polished amber pieces are set into the entrance and glow like warm fire in the sunlight. Window frames are carved with flowing patterns that resemble dripping resin and the sign above the door has a large amber centerpiece that appears to glow even on cloudy days. These decorations act as advertisement and demonstration of the finest work.

Inside, the front of the ground floor is a retail showroom with glass fronted cabinets displaying amber jewelry and decorative items. Shelves hold pendants, earrings, bracelets, rings, figurines, boxes, polished spheres, and practical items such as amber handled knives, walking stick tops, and pipe stems. Small placards list each item with its price and the golden light from the windows makes everything glow with warm radiance. The rear of the ground floor is the workshop where raw resin is transformed into finished amber goods with heavy worktables, tools including saws, files, rasps, sandpaper, and polishing compounds, and a small forge for metal findings. Lighting from large windows is essential for examining, cutting, and finishing amber pieces.

Raw materials come from fresh resin and fossilized amber. Fresh resin is tapped from living trees using careful cuts during seasons of heavy sap flow. Trees are never over tapped and strict limits protect their health. The resin is cleaned, heated to remove volatile compounds, and hardened or poured into molds. Fossilized amber is collected from forest floors and stream banks, especially after heavy rains. It may contain insects or plant fragments and has substantial value. The shop pays fair prices through a bounty system to encourage citizens to bring pieces they find which helps maintain supply and provides income to individuals.

The Master Amberworker oversees operations with passion and practical sense, judging amber quality by clarity, color, and internal traits, cutting and shaping it without cracking, and designing finished pieces. Apprentices are trained to learn the craft and help meet demand. The shop produces jewelry from simple beads on leather cords to elaborate necklaces set in precious metals, as well as carved figurines, ornamental boxes, polished spheres, and practical items with amber accents. The business becomes a premier craft establishment known for quality products and reasonable prices. Visiting merchants seek out the shop for goods that sell well in distant markets. Profits flow into the community and artisans make good livings while the settlement gains prestige as a place where nature's bounty becomes lasting beauty through human skill.
