Thorn Walls

Thorn Walls

Prerequisite: Canopy Walkways
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The Thorn Walls transform the natural growth at the Elderwood Grove's border into a powerful defensive system. In their dormant state, the enchantment lies hidden beneath the soil along the entire perimeter, visible only as subtle differences in the undergrowth where low bramble roses, blackberry vines, and hardy hawthorn shrubs trace the boundary line. These plants look like ordinary wild growth but serve as magical anchors, their root systems woven into deep, complex networks. When Duke Hotaru Wyrmwhisper or any authorized individual speaks the command word, the boundary trembles as thousands of thick woody vines erupt from the ground and surge upward with the sound of rushing wind through leaves. Within seconds, they interweave into a solid barrier over twenty feet high, covered in magically reinforced thorns between half an inch and three inches long, each as sharp as a blade and harder than common wood. The result is a wall that is both beautiful and terrifying, its dense brambles forming intricate patterns adorned with roses in shades from deep crimson to pale pink that bloom in accelerated cycles of days rather than months, filling the air with sweet fragrance that sharply contrasts with the lethality of the thorns.

The Thorn Walls can be raised around the entire settlement at once or only along selected stretches, since each section operates independently. This allows defenders to open specific passages for allies while keeping enemies blocked elsewhere. When a section is lowered, the vines withdraw into the earth as quickly as they appeared, leaving only ordinary undergrowth and no visible trace of the barrier. This flexibility makes the system far more practical than static masonry fortifications and lets the grove appear open and welcoming during peaceful times. The thorns themselves are enhanced beyond simple physical damage. They draw constant moisture through the deep root network, making the walls extraordinarily resistant to fire and nearly impossible to burn. Magical hardening allows them to turn aside most blades and forces attackers to exert exceptional effort to cut through. Because the underlying enchantment is spread across thousands of individual plants rather than concentrated in a single focal point, dispelling or suppressing the defense through magic is extremely difficult.

Attempts to force passage through the Thorn Walls quickly become dangerous ordeals. Thorns catch and tear at clothing, equipment, and exposed skin, demanding slow and careful extraction to avoid worsening injuries. The vines possess a subtle animation guided by the enchantment's purpose. While not truly sentient, they shift and tighten around anything that becomes entangled, steadily making escape more difficult for trapped intruders. Climbing offers little relief, as the barrier grows denser with height and the thorns angle downward in ways that hinder upward movement and threaten to impale anyone who slips. The walls' magical nature also grants additional advantages. Druids and rangers attuned to the settlement can sense disturbances along the barrier, feeling vibrations through their connection to the forest whenever something presses against the walls or attempts a breach. Damaged areas regenerate over time as the network draws on shared roots, growing new vines to replace severed ones and sprouting fresh thorns where others were broken, a slower process than the initial eruption but sufficient to maintain integrity during prolonged sieges.

Maintaining the Thorn Walls demands relatively little effort compared to their power. The Thorn Keeper tends the anchor plants along the perimeter, ensuring they receive enough nutrients, occasionally enriching the soil, and removing competing vegetation that could interfere with the root network. During winter, evergreen species woven into the system preserve functionality so the walls can still be raised even when deciduous components lie dormant. The Keeper also trains a select group of authorized operators in the proper command words and procedures so that the defense can be activated quickly in emergencies when the Duke is not immediately present. The psychological effect of the walls is significant: approaching forces who initially see only natural forest growth watch the boundary erupt into a towering bramble fortress in moments. The rapid transformation from open community to fortified position clearly demonstrates both capability and resolve and often convinces potential aggressors to abandon their plans rather than commit to an assault that would require great resources and result in heavy casualties.

The Thorn Walls integrate seamlessly with the settlement's other defenses and contribute to everyday life. The Canopy Walkways above provide elevated positions from which defenders can observe and attack enemies stalled at the barriers, while additional magical defenses can be layered behind the walls to create multiple lines of protection. If invaders manage to breach a section, new internal walls can be raised to compartmentalize the settlement, contain intruders, and allow residents to evacuate along secure routes. Beyond warfare, the anchor plants yield abundant berries and rose hips that residents harvest for food and medicine. The living barrier clearly marks the settlement's borders, reducing accidental trespass and forming a natural fence that helps keep livestock and children safely inside. Forest animals learn to avoid the thorn line, creating a buffer zone that reduces human wildlife conflict. Citizens take pride in their living fortress, telling children stories of times the walls rose to protect the grove, while adults rest easier knowing such defenses are always ready. Visitors are often astonished by demonstrations of the walls rising and falling, admiring the way they embody the settlement's philosophy of protection through living nature rather than stone and metal, channeling the forest's own strength into an elegant yet impenetrable shield.

Benefits

Once activated, the Thorn Walls create a barrier 20 feet high and 10 feet thick along any or all sections of the settlement's border. The barrier provides total cover and is treated as a wall with hardness 15 and 30 hit points per 5-foot section. Any creature attempting to pass through the barrier without using the designated gates takes 3d6 piercing damage per round as the thorns tear at flesh and equipment. Creatures that become entangled (Reflex DC 18 to avoid) are held fast and continue taking damage each round until they escape (Strength DC 22 or Escape Artist DC 25). The walls can be raised or lowered as a standard action by authorized individuals speaking the command word. The barrier regenerates 5 hit points per section per hour. The Thorn Keeper can attune up to 5 additional individuals to operate the walls. This enchantment generates 12 Prestige, reflecting the settlement's formidable defensive capabilities and the impressive display of natural magic.
