Description
The Canopy Walkways form an elevated network of bridges and platforms that connect the tree dwellings of the Elderwood Grove, turning the settlement into a unified community in the branches. Suspended thirty to fifty feet above the forest floor, these paths weave gracefully through the canopy, linking homes, meeting spaces, and important structures. Their design allows residents to travel safely and efficiently without disturbing the ground below, creating a peaceful and practical way to move through the forest from above.
Each walkway is crafted from planks cut from fallen timber laid over woven plant fiber ropes, creating flexible yet sturdy bridges that move naturally with the trees. The supports wrap around protective wooden collars fitted to the branches, allowing the trees to continue growing while keeping the structures firmly anchored. Ropes and soft bark padding ensure the living wood remains unharmed. The bridges sway gently as people cross, a movement that soon feels natural to those who live among the trees.
Handrails made of woven rope patterns line every walkway, reinforced by carved sapling posts for safety and stability. At intersections or long spans, larger platforms offer secure resting spaces with built-in benches or small gardens that add beauty and soften the structure’s presence. Main walkways are wide enough for two people to pass comfortably, while narrower secondary paths reach individual dwellings. Hidden emergency routes provide quick escape options in case of danger.
Lanterns filled with bioluminescent moss hang at regular intervals, lighting the paths at night with a gentle glow that does not disturb wildlife. Cargo nets below many sections offer additional protection, and supply stations at key platform hubs store ropes, tools, and basic medical items. The entire system adjusts with the forest’s growth, with collars and ropes repositioned seasonally to maintain balance and avoid harming the trees. Some routes even run along living branches that have been trained to grow in supportive shapes.
Traveling the walkways changes with the seasons, from blossoming tunnels in spring to cool shaded corridors in summer and colorful leaf-lined paths in autumn. Winter opens wide views of the forest and sky. Observation platforms, small pavilions, and play areas enhance the network, making it both functional and deeply integrated into daily life. The walkways embody the settlement’s bond with the forest, creating a three-dimensional community that thrives not beneath the canopy, but within it.
