Description

The Plague Purge Circle is located at the exact center of the Elderwood Grove, marked by thirteen granite standing stones arranged in a perfect forty foot wide ring. Each stone stands eight feet tall, two feet wide, and is crafted from disease resistant granite carved with ancient druidic purification runes that glow softly at night. These stones were placed with absolute precision and form the foundation of the ward. The circle’s location was determined through careful magical surveying to ensure that its protective influence could extend evenly across the entire settlement, creating both a symbolic and functional heart for the ward’s power.

The stones follow deliberate astronomical and magical alignments, each positioned to channel specific natural forces. The northern stone corresponds to the polestar and represents steadfast protection, while the eastern stone captures dawn light for renewal. The southern stone absorbs the sun’s zenith to provide purifying heat, and the western stone symbolizes the ending of disease with the setting sun. The remaining nine stones reinforce these energies by marking additional celestial and magical points. Together they create a network that directs protective energy outward from the circle to shield the settlement from disease.

At the center stands the Heart Stone, a flawless four foot tall quartz crystal that anchors the ward. Within it swirls a mist of silvery white energy that pulses like a heartbeat, visible even to those without magical training. The Heart Stone radiates a steady protective presence and serves as the focal point for all purification energy channeled through the standing stones. Its activation required every druid in the settlement to work continuously for three days and nights, using chants, offerings, and cleansing magic fueled by sacred herbs and spring water. At dawn on the fourth day the crystal shone with bright white light, signaling that the ward had fully awakened.

The ward extends invisibly across the entire settlement, drawing power from Goodberry’s dimensional bubble and the abundant vitality of the Life Tree. It strengthens the immune systems of all residents, weakens disease causing organisms, disrupts transmission vectors, and accelerates healing for those already infected. Even when exposed to contagion brought in from outside, citizens rarely fall ill or suffer more than mild symptoms. The ward is particularly effective against plague and epidemic level diseases, rendering their pathogens harmless within the settlement’s boundaries and offering stabilizing effects for sick refugees who enter seeking help.

The Plague Purge Circle has become a spiritual and practical gathering place for the community. Residents walk the circle as a meditative practice, healers conduct treatments within its boundaries, and parents bring newborns for blessings. Seasonal ceremonies are held at the Heart Stone to honor the ward’s protection, especially during times of disease in the outside world. Minimal maintenance is required aside from cleaning the runes, renewing silver inlays, and tending the area around the Heart Stone. The ward’s benefits extend to crops, livestock, and wildlife, creating a healthy and thriving ecosystem. Visitors frequently remark on the settlement’s vitality, though the Duke carefully manages how much of the circle’s power is publicly known to avoid attracting overwhelming numbers of desperate outsiders.

Benefits

The Plague Purge Circle creates a powerful protective ward that extends throughout the entire Elderwood Grove settlement. All residents within the settlement's boundaries gain a +5 resistance bonus to Fortitude saves against disease. Natural diseases automatically fail to infect residents, requiring magical diseases to make a DC 20 check to even attempt infection. If a resident does contract a disease before entering the settlement or through magical means, they gain an additional saving throw every 12 hours (instead of the normal daily rate) to overcome the affliction, and the disease's DC is reduced by 4. The ward prevents disease from spreading between individuals within the settlement, making epidemics impossible. Livestock, crops, and natural ecosystems within the settlement also benefit from disease resistance. The Plague Purge Circle generates 18 Prestige, reflecting the settlement's reputation as a sanctuary of health and a place where plague cannot reach.
