Physical Description
Appearance
Tenya's skin resembles polished turquoise stone with delicate golden veining that traces beneath the surface like captured lightning. Her obsidian-black hair falls to her waist in intricate braids following patterns from a civilization lost to time. Her eyes are molten gold, reflecting light like heated metal, and when she speaks, there's always a faint echo as if someone else whispers alongside her words. She moves with deliberate grace, never rushed, and carries herself with the bearing of someone who has endured great suffering with dignity. Standing at 6'1", she commands attention through presence rather than force.
Unique Characteristics
The golden veins beneath her skin pulse faintly when she's deeply emotional or using her divine abilities. She constantly carries the scent of sandalwood and rain on stone, regardless of weather or location. Her silvered shield is etched with ancient funerary prayers in multiple dead languages, and the metal seems to hum softly in the presence of undead or restless spirits. When experiencing temporal displacement episodes, her golden eyes briefly flicker with different colors, sometimes brown, sometimes green, echoing the eyes of the mortal she was meant to replace.

Background & History
Creation and False Punishment
Tenya's existence began not with birth, but with awakening in a realm of endless shadows and whispered accusations. She was created as a shabti to serve in place of Velara Nethys, a high priestess who had enslaved thousands of souls in life, binding them to fuel her dark rituals. In the afterlife's justice, Velara's spirit was condemned to torment, but Tenya was crafted to bear that punishment instead, infused with false memories of crimes she had never committed. For decades, Tenya endured suffering meant for another, believing with every fiber of her being that she was the cruel sorceress who had condemned so many to spiritual slavery. The guilt was overwhelming, a crushing weight that defined her existence. She accepted every punishment, every moment of agony, convinced that she deserved it all.
Awakening on the Material Plane
Without warning or explanation, she awakened on the shores of the material plane. The transition was jarring, one moment surrounded by the accusing voices of the afterlife, the next lying on cold sand with waves lapping at her feet. She was free, but the weight of false guilt remained. For months, she wandered aimlessly, followed by spirits who seemed drawn to her presence. Some were angry, demanding justice for crimes she believed she had committed. Others seemed confused, sensing something different about her but unable to understand what. Her wandering eventually brought her to Er'Amon, where the town's supernatural calm provided her first taste of peace in decades.
Discovering the Truth in Er'Amon
The elven elders of Er'Amon recognized what she was immediately, not the evil priestess whose memories she carried, but an innocent created to suffer in another's place. Master Aerandir Dusksong took personal interest in her case, teaching her meditation techniques to separate her true self from the implanted memories. The process of healing was neither quick nor complete. Under the gentle guidance of Er'Amon's spiritual leaders, Tenya slowly learned to recognize which memories were truly hers and which belonged to the woman she was meant to replace. The guilt began to transform from crushing self-hatred into a deep empathy for those who had truly suffered at Velara's hands.
Becoming the Spirit Shepherd
As Tenya's understanding of her nature grew, so did her connection to the spirit world. The shabti creation process had left her partially existing between realms, making her a natural conduit for communication with the dead. Spirits were drawn to her not seeking vengeance for Velara's crimes, but because they sensed someone who understood suffering and injustice on a fundamental level. She began helping them resolve their unfinished business, serving as a mediator between the living and the dead. Her training as a Sacred Shield Paladin began organically. Her divine powers manifested not from worship of a specific deity, but from her overwhelming desire to protect others from the kind of unjust suffering she had endured.
The Temporal Displacement Episodes
Several years after her awakening, Tenya began experiencing what she calls temporal displacement episodes, triggered by stress or deep emotional connections. During these moments, she briefly experiences memories from the original mortal whose life was used as a template for her creation, not Velara, but an innocent priestess who had been murdered to facilitate the dark ritual that created Velara's power. These glimpses of a life of genuine service and compassion serve as a counterbalance to the false memories of cruelty, but they also create confusion about her true identity. She struggles with understanding who she really is beneath the layers of implanted history.
Learning to Connect with the Living
Despite her progress in understanding herself and helping spirits, Tenya found social interactions with the living particularly challenging. Her constant companionship with spirits and her decades of isolation in the afterlife left her uncertain about basic social conventions. In Goodberry, she spends much of her time sitting alone in a chair in the dark, not realizing this is unusual or concerning behavior. When Hotaru discovered this, he and the other adventurers felt terrible and decided to throw her a party at Our Home, Raya's tavern. It was Tenya's first party ever. Though she was awkward throughout the celebration, struggling with the noise and social expectations, she genuinely enjoyed the experience and the realization that people cared about her wellbeing, not for what she could do for spirits, but simply because she mattered to them as a person.
Goals
Understanding Her True Self
Tenya's foremost personal goal is to fully understand who she is beneath the layers of implanted memories and fragmentary glimpses of others' lives. She wants to build an authentic identity based on her own choices and experiences rather than the false memories of Velara or the fleeting impressions of the murdered priestess. This involves not just distinguishing what memories are truly hers, but actively creating new experiences and relationships that define her as an individual. She hopes to eventually reach a point where she can answer the question of her own identity with confidence, understanding both what she was created to be and what she has chosen to become through her own agency and growth.
Helping Other Constructs and Created Beings
Having experienced the unique challenges of being created rather than born, Tenya wants to help other constructs, shaptis, golems, and artificially created beings who struggle with questions of purpose, identity, and self-determination. She dreams of establishing a network or sanctuary where such beings can find guidance in understanding their nature, support in developing their own identities separate from their creators' intentions, and advocacy for their rights to exist as individuals rather than mere tools. She believes her experience of suffering unjustly and then finding purpose through helping others provides a template that could benefit countless created beings who struggle with similar existential questions.
Creating a World Without Unjust Binding
Tenya's ultimate aspiration is to work toward a future where no spirit will be unjustly bound or punished for crimes they didn't commit, and where communication between the living and dead can be as natural as conversation between neighbors. This involves both preventing necromancers and dark practitioners from enslaving spirits and helping establish ethical frameworks for spirit communication and interaction. She wants to see her shepherding of spirits become a recognized practice that others can learn, creating a profession of spirit mediators who help both living and dead understand each other's needs and resolve conflicts peacefully. Her experiences have taught her that suffering can be transformed into wisdom and compassion if one has the courage to let it change them for the better, and she hopes to demonstrate this principle through her work.
Learning to Fully Embrace Life Among the Living
Beyond her grand spiritual goals, Tenya has a simpler but equally important aspiration to truly understand and participate in life among living people. The party at Our Home revealed to her how much she has been missing by maintaining such distance from normal social interactions. She wants to learn what it means to have genuine friendships not based on duty or spiritual connection, to understand celebrations and casual gatherings, and to experience the simple pleasures of mortal existence that she has largely observed from the outside. This includes overcoming her habit of sitting alone in dark rooms, learning to ask for help when she needs it, and accepting that her own needs and happiness matter just as much as those of the spirits she shepherds. She hopes to eventually achieve a balance where she can fulfill her spiritual duties while also living a rich and connected life among those who care about her.

While Tenya appears gentle and somewhat socially awkward, she is a formidable Sacred Shield Paladin whose divine powers manifest from profound conviction rather than worship. Her connection to the spirit world gives her unique advantages against necromantic magic and those who would exploit or bind souls. When protecting others from spiritual threats or unjust suffering, she transforms from hesitant and uncertain into an unwavering force of divine protection.
