Physical Description

Stevie Chaplain
Stevie Chaplain, exactly as she prefers to be seen
Appearance

Stevie is 5'5" with long black hair shot through with streaks of green she touches up herself whenever she can find the dye, a nose ring, and a climbing row of piercings up one ear that she added one at a time, each with its own small story she's happy to tell if asked. Ink covers most of one arm and shoulder, a detailed portrait she saved for a year to afford, worked in among smaller pieces added since for less serious reasons than the first. She dresses entirely for herself, dark lace and leather that would have scandalized half of Tully, and wears all of it like she's never once considered that anyone's opinion of it matters.

Unique Characteristics

Stevie will strike up a real conversation with absolutely anyone, human or otherwise, and means every word of the warmth she offers, which is a large part of why half of Tent Row can list her as a friend within a month of meeting her. She gives away food, coin, and clothing on reflex the moment she notices someone needs it more than she does, often leaving her own tent barer than her neighbors' as a direct result. She laughs loudly, often, and completely unselfconsciously, and has a scar over one eyebrow she describes differently every time she's asked about it, usually more dramatically than the last.

Personality & Temperament

Positive Traits
  • Radically kind to absolute strangers, immediately
  • Gives away her last coin without a second thought
  • Utterly unbothered by other people's judgment
  • Fights fiercely for anyone smaller who's cornered
  • Finds real joy in almost anything, most days
Challenging Traits
  • Escalates fast once actually pushed to fight
  • Avoids anything that smells like commitment
  • Numbs hard feelings rather than sitting with them
  • Still angrier at Tully than she'll admit out loud
  • Terrified of being loved only for the performance

I tried being who Tully wanted for eighteen years. Turns out that girl was exhausting to be.

I don't own a house. I own a tent, forty new friends, and every single choice I make about my own body. Good trade.

I'm a lover, not a fighter. But corner me, or corner someone I love, and you'll meet the fighter real quick.

Background & History

A Mining Town's Wrong Kind of Daughter
Stevie grew up in Tully, a coastal mining and maritime city that runs on strong community standards and stronger opinions about what those standards should look like. Her first tattoo went on at sixteen, against every piece of advice available to her, and every piece since has been its own small declaration. Tully never formally punished her for who she was. It simply made sure she knew, constantly and in a hundred small ways, that she wasn't who the town had hoped for.

Leaving
There wasn't one final incident so much as a slow accumulation of neighbors crossing streets, whispered conversations that stopped when she entered a room, and a mother who loved her and was ashamed of her in roughly equal measure and never quite managed to hide either. Stevie left Tully the way she does most things, without much of a plan and without looking back, certain only that she couldn't keep shrinking herself to fit a town that had already decided who she was.

Word of an Open-Minded Duke
She heard, through travelers passing back through Tully's market, that Silmarithil's Duke, Lucerion, who she's since learned goes by Lucerion now, was known to be genuinely open-minded, uninterested in policing how his people lived as long as they weren't hurting anyone. That was enough. She arrived with almost nothing and has not, in over a month here, found a single reason to regret the walk.

Tent Row
She never found the coin or the interest to secure a proper house, and pitched her tent instead among Silmarithil's small unhoused community on the city's edge. Within a few weeks she had become something close to a local celebrity there, the person who remembers everyone's name, shares whatever she has without being asked twice, and can turn a rough night into a genuinely good one through sheer force of personality. She hasn't met anyone from the city's wider social or political circles yet. Tent Row hasn't needed her to.

Goals & Aspirations

A Family That Doesn't Require Explaining Herself
Stevie isn't chasing a house, a title, or a trade. What she actually wants is for Tent Row's loose, ever-shifting community of friends to become something more permanent, a found family that would still be there on an ordinary bad day, not just for the parties and the good nights. She hasn't tested that yet, and privately isn't sure she wants to know the answer.

The Letters She Hasn't Sent
Stevie tells everyone, cheerfully and often, that she's completely finished with Tully and doesn't think about it. She has also written her mother four short letters since leaving and mailed exactly none of them, unsure whether she's protecting herself, protecting her mother, or simply not ready to find out there's no answer waiting either way.

ATTENTION!
Stevie Chaplain has no formal combat training and no interest in violence as a first resort, and will tell you so herself, cheerfully. She is not exaggerating the second half of that sentence: corner her or anyone she's decided to protect, and she fights with a scrappy, all-in ferocity that has ended more than one bar dispute faster than anyone expected. She has zero standing in Silmarithil's official circles and no ambitions toward getting any, but she is extremely well-liked and well-connected among the city's unhoused community, which makes her a better source of street-level gossip than most people give her credit for.
