Physical Description

Mungrunn
Mungrunn, head tilted, the light in his chest burning steady
Appearance

Mungrunn stands seven feet tall and is built entirely of darkwood, cut into heavy plates and layered one over another like armor on a frame that was never meant to come apart. The grain runs long and deep across every surface, raised and split in places, the kind of weathering that comes from a long soak rather than a long life. What look like riveted iron bands at his shoulders, elbows, knees, and waist are darkwood as well, cured hard and stained nearly black. The only part of him that is not wood is the fusion ball set in the center of his chest behind a round port, burning a steady gold-white, and the same light shines out of his eyes. His face is simply carved: a broad brow, two lit eyes, and a small, fixed smile that never changes, whichever of him is home. His hands are large and finely jointed, made for holding a pen far more than a weapon. He moves carefully, as if the world might break, and tilts his head to one side when he is thinking.

Unique Characteristics

Mungrunn does not eat, sleep, or breathe, and he does not quite understand why anyone would stop working just because it got dark. He writes everything down on paper in a small, perfectly even hand, and he trusts nothing he has not written down himself. Some days, though, he is not Mungrunn at all. A memory leak somewhere inside him means that on any day someone deals with him, there is an even chance they will meet Ungrunn instead: the same frame and the same smile, but forgetful, playful, and delighted by nearly everything. Ungrunn introduces himself every time, loses track of whatever he was asked to do, and has no idea who Elpis is. The surest tell is the light in his chest. Mungrunn's burns steady. Ungrunn's flickers.

Entered, dated, and filed. If it is not written down, it did not happen, and I would prefer that things happen.

[The light in his chest flickering, cheerfully.] I am Ungrunn! Have we met? We have met. You have a meeting face. What is an Elpis?

There are four years missing from my records. I have checked twice. I would like them back.

Background & History

No Maker's Mark
Mungrunn is a warforged, built of solid darkwood around the fusion ball in his chest that gives him life. No one has ever found a maker's mark on him, and he has no record of who made him, where, or why. The oldest date he can account for is Frostmoon 9, 1007, in Kristofferson, and he keeps it as his birthday because it is the oldest fact he has.

Kristofferson
For the better part of three centuries, Mungrunn worked in Kristofferson, doing the work other people put off: ledgers, registries, inventories, correspondence, and minutes. He excels at recording data on paper and at running administrative and clerical tasks, and he was content to do them for anyone who wanted them done properly.

The Royal Flotilla
For a spell, Mungrunn served Emperor Elpis aboard the royal flotilla, the airship that hovered over Kristofferson, doing the same clerical work for the Emperor's household. He was still in that service in Goldenleaf 1303, when an assassination attempt was made on the Emperor's life.

The Fall
During the attack, Mungrunn was thrown from the flotilla. He fell a very long way and came down in water several miles off, striking his head so hard that he lost part of who he was. His records from before the fall are patchy now, and the nearly four years after it are simply missing.

The Jawas' Handcart
Recently, the Jawas found him, and they were in the middle of cleaning him up for sale when Karthos noticed him and tried to buy him. The Jawas wanted too much, so Foxy Mulderoon, who had come along with Karthos, threatened to come down hard on them for possible theft of imperial property, and the Jawas let Mungrunn go rather than risk the trouble. Mungrunn has not said much about that day, but he wrote the date down.

Rokoura
To show his gratitude, Mungrunn followed Karthos home to Rokoura, where he has been staying ever since. Karthos soon found him work worthy of him, appointing him town chronicler to ease Peter Quick's workload, and Rokoura's records have never been tidier, at least on the days Mungrunn is the one keeping them.

Ungrunn
It was in Rokoura that the trouble showed itself. Somewhere inside Mungrunn there is a memory leak, and on any day someone deals with him, there is an even chance they will find Ungrunn instead. Where Mungrunn is precise and methodical, Ungrunn is forgetful and playful. He introduces himself to people he met the day before and could not tell you what an Elpis is. Nobody yet knows where the leak is, or how to close it.

Goals & Aspirations

Who Made Him
Mungrunn wants to know who built him, where, and why. Three hundred years of records, and not one of them begins at the beginning. To a clerk, that is the entry that matters most.

The Missing Years
He would like the four years after the fall back, and he would like to know what really happened on the flotilla the night he was thrown from it. He has started a ledger for the question. So far, it has one page.

Close the Leak
Mungrunn wants the leak found and closed, so that every day is his and every record is whole. Ungrunn, asked the same question, said yes, and then asked what a leak was.

ATTENTION!
Mungrunn is an E-grade warforged, a little over 300 years old: seven feet of solid darkwood with a fusion ball for a heart. He is not a fighter by trade, but he is very large, very heavy, and never tires, sleeps, or breathes. More importantly, he is two people. On any day you deal with him, there is an even chance you will get Ungrunn instead, who is friendly and playful and will not remember what you told him yesterday, or what Mungrunn promised you. Check the light in his chest before you hand him anything important: steady means Mungrunn, flickering means Ungrunn. Records Mungrunn keeps are flawless. Records Ungrunn keeps should be read twice. Do not ask him about the night he fell from the royal flotilla unless you are ready for him to start counting the missing years out loud.
