Physical Description

Malrec Ashvale
Professor Ashvale, putting the fire exactly where he wants it, and nowhere else
Appearance

Malrec is a lean, upright man of forty-eight, squarely in the prime of his life as D-grade folk measure it, with a severe, clean-shaven face, dark hair combed straight back, and a pair of thin wire-rimmed spectacles that he looks over far more often than he looks through. Nearly everyone who meets him takes him for human. He dresses with the formality of a man who spent twenty years at the head of a lecture hall: a long dark robe patterned in charcoal and deep red, a high crimson collar, a heavy mantle of gold filigree across the shoulders fastened with a blue-stoned clasp, and a sweeping cape lined in dark wine. A broad belt hung with buckled pouches of chalk, reagents, and notebooks sits at his waist, because he does not trust any calculation he has not written down.

Unique Characteristics

Malrec is an Ifrit, but his elemental ancestry is subtle enough that he passes easily for human. His tells are mostly supernatural rather than physical: his skin is always unusually warm to the touch, his eyes reflect a faint orange-red in the dark, and his body temperature climbs noticeably whenever he channels magic, enough that people standing beside him during a long casting sometimes step back without knowing why. He hates being asked whether his elemental blood is why he is good at fire magic. He was also born under the Phoenixborn Ifrit, which he maintains is a coincidence and which everyone else considers a punchline. His fire behaves with unnatural precision. He can send flame through a doorway without touching the frame, burn a weapon out of someone's hand without scorching their skin, or raise a wall of fire exactly six inches in front of an advancing formation. There is no wasted magic, and that, more than any explosion, is what makes watching him fight so unsettling.

Positive Traits
  • Endlessly patient with honest ignorance
  • Precise to a degree that borders on the uncanny
  • Will explain anything all afternoon if you truly ask
  • Refuses to let his work be turned on the innocent
  • Bone-dry wit, delivered over the top of his glasses

  • An absolute nightmare to deal with before breakfast
  • Puts more mathematics in a lecture than anyone wants
  • Bristles at any suggestion that his blood did the work
  • Deeply suspicious of administrators of any kind

No. Studying is why I'm good at fire magic.

Can I create fire without oxygen? Yes. [How?] Magic. [That's your explanation?] You asked whether I could. Your second question costs tuition.

[Told that he can't use fire in here, he turns his head, very slowly.] You can't.

Likes
  • A spell that does exactly what it was told, no more
  • Students who say "I don't understand" out loud
  • Strong black tea, taken after breakfast, not before
  • Chalk, slate, and a long, unbroken calculation
  • Old wizards who can admit they were wrong
Dislikes
  • Being asked if his fire magic comes from his blood

Background & History

Born in the Volcano
Malrec was born in 1258 on the Residential Terraces of Emberpeak, the city carved into the side of an active volcano in the Dragon's Eye Mountains, where a third of the population is Ifrit and fire is practically the local language. Everyone assumed his talent for flame came from his blood. It irritated him from the age of about six. He set out to prove them wrong in the most tedious way possible: by studying harder than anyone else in the city, and by learning the mathematics that most of Emberpeak's pyromancers considered optional.

Applied Evocation
For nearly twenty years Malrec taught Applied Evocation at Emberpeak's Pyromancer's Academy. He was an exceptionally respected professor. He was also, by every account, an absolute nightmare to have before breakfast. His students learned very quickly that he cared about one thing above everything else: control. Anyone can throw a fireball. Malrec taught them to put that fireball exactly where they wanted it, to calculate the pressure wave, to account for enclosed spaces, to avoid igniting the surrounding structure, and to determine whether fire was even the appropriate element to begin with. His students occasionally complained that his classes contained more mathematics than magic. Malrec considered this encouraging.

The Contract
Eventually the Academy accepted a military contract, and its faculty were asked to develop increasingly destructive battlefield magic. Malrec initially participated. That changed in 1300, when he discovered that the Academy's administrators had taken one of his experimental spells and tested it against an occupied settlement. The spell worked perfectly. That was the problem. Malrec resigned the same evening, and before he left he took every copy of his research he could locate. The Academy describes this as theft of institutional property. Malrec describes it as "correcting an administrative error." Several attempts were subsequently made to retrieve the research. They stopped. Nobody is entirely certain why, and Malrec declines to elaborate.

A Fire Mage Among the Trees
Malrec spent the next six years in Gelderai, the one great city on the continent where open flame above the ground tier is forbidden by law. He chose it deliberately. Nobody in a city made of living trees was ever going to ask him to build a weapon out of fire, and he wanted to find out whether his control was truly as good as he believed. The elves came to rely on him in a way neither side expected: Gelderai's wardens began calling him whenever something burned, and he spent years teaching them how fire actually behaves, how to contain it, and how to kill it before it spreads. The elves had hired a pyromancer to keep their city from burning. He considered it the most sensible job offer he had ever received.

The Closed Furnace
When the undead came for Gelderai in Goldenleaf of 1306, the city faced a cruel problem. Fire is the oldest answer to the dead, and in a city built of living wood, nobody could safely use it. Nobody except Malrec. He held a stairway in the Boughways for most of a night with the spell he calls Ashvale's Closed Furnace, which seals a sphere of force around its target and then makes the inside very, very hot. The fire cannot escape the boundary. Neither can the heat. One of the elven wardens beside him shouted that he could not use fire in there. Malrec turned his head, said "You can't," and the stairway turned orange. The elves who were there say the fire never touched a single leaf. When a visiting wizard later told him the spell was impossible, Malrec adjusted his glasses and observed that the word appears frequently among mediocre academics. He came south to Goodberry with the refugees afterward.

Goals & Aspirations

The Arcane College
Queen Arties Geodegazer has asked Malrec to take charge of Goodberry's newly built Arcane College. He has not yet given her an answer. He has, however, walked every hallway of the campus twice, written eleven pages of unsolicited notes on the fire wards in the practicum wing (they are adequate, and he does not accept adequate), and drafted a first-year curriculum that contains considerably more mathematics than anyone will enjoy. If he accepts, the first lesson will be the one he taught for twenty years: anyone can throw a fireball.

Research That Stays Buried
Malrec will teach control to anyone who wants to learn it. He will teach the spell from Emberpeak to no one. His research stays with him, and he has made it clear that this applies to armies, academies, and well-meaning allies alike. He has not said what he would do to anyone who tried to take it. He has not needed to.

A Name He Doesn't Say
Malrec knows the name of the settlement his spell was tested on. He has never said it aloud, and he has never gone back. Every season since 1300, however, a sum of gold has arrived there from an anonymous sender, without a letter and without fail.

ATTENTION!
Malrec Ashvale is a D-grade evocation wizard and one of the most dangerous spellcasters in Goodberry, not because he has the biggest fireball in the world, but because he may be one of the very few people alive who can decide exactly what his fire burns. A monster holding a hostage, an enemy inside a wooden building, or allies surrounded by the enemy are problems for most evokers. They are not problems for him. His signature spell seals an inferno inside a boundary it cannot cross, so he can loose something equal to an enormous fireball in a crowded room without harming anyone outside it. He is severe but not cruel: endlessly patient with honest ignorance and merciless with arrogance. If you pretend to understand him, he will take you apart until honesty becomes the easier option. Most people take him for human; he is an Ifrit, and suggesting that his blood is why he is good at fire magic is the fastest way to end a conversation with him. Do not speak to him before breakfast.
