Physical Description

Lucan Veyre
Lucan Veyre, at the hour of the night when everything is going exactly the way he planned
Appearance

Lucan is forty-two, and like anyone of E-grade he still looks like a man in his twenties, which he has never once minded being mistaken for. He is tall and lean, with sharp, handsome features, a light shadow of stubble, and long black hair swept back from his face, with a single thin braid tucked in behind one ear. His eyes are the thing people remember: a pale, luminous gold that catches candlelight a little too well. He dresses for evenings, because evenings are when he works. His usual choice is a long black coat of soft, heavy fabric with a high collar and gold-embroidered trim, worn open at the chest, and he has never once been seen looking rushed in it.

Unique Characteristics

Lucan remembers everything. He remembers names, drinks, and who was sitting beside whom, and if you mentioned six months ago that your daughter was applying to an academy, he will somehow remember to ask how she did. It makes people like him. It also means Lucan knows everything. His dhampir blood shows mostly in small inconveniences: strong daylight gives him headaches and makes his eyes water, animals tend to distrust him on sight, and people occasionally grow uncomfortable when he looks at them a moment too long. He has an almost supernatural sense for which person at a crowded gathering is miserable, and that is usually the moment he appears beside them with a drink.

[Asked whether he drinks blood.] Do you? [No.] Wonderful. Something in common.

You look like you're having an awful time. [Is it that obvious?] Only to professionals.

People are complicated. [He takes a drink and looks out over several hundred people having a wonderful evening.] Fortunately, fun isn't.

  • Remembering the small thing that made someone's week
  • Cards, dice, and wagers he'll probably lose

Dislikes
  • Questions about his father, or about blood

Background & History

His Mother's Son
Lucan was born in 1263 in the Rootways of Gelderai, the dim ground tier of the city where its humans, half-elves, and visitors live beneath the canopy. His mother was a human cook. His father was a vampire he never met, and his mother never once romanticized it: his father was not a tragic lost love but a predator who disappeared before Lucan was born. So Lucan grew up with absolutely no fascination with vampire culture, and he finds other people's assumptions about dhampirs exhausting. He discovered very young that daylight bothered him, that animals distrusted him (even Gelderai's shimmerfinches, which will land on anyone's shoulder, would not land on his), and that people sometimes grew uneasy when he looked at them too long. The green twilight of the Rootways was a mercy. His solution to everything else was simple: become likable. He became exceptionally good at it.

Cleaning, Serving, Pouring, Managing
As a teenager Lucan worked in the Rootways' taverns: first cleaning, then serving, then tending bar, then managing. He realized quickly that the difference between a mediocre tavern and a wildly successful one often had very little to do with the alcohol. People came back because of how a place made them feel. So he learned the rest of it: remember their names, introduce compatible strangers, separate incompatible ones, put the right musician on at the right hour, know when someone wants company, and know when someone desperately needs to be left alone. He became frighteningly good at reading a room.

"Your Ale Is Fine"
Eventually wealthy owners began paying him to fix failing establishments. He would walk into a nearly empty inn, watch for an evening, and deliver his verdict. "Your ale is fine," he would tell the owner. "Then what's wrong?" Lucan would look around the room. "Everything else." Half the taverns of the Rootways went through his hands at one point or another, The Tapped Root among them, and most of them were busier afterward.

After Dark in the Rootways
By his thirties Lucan no longer ran one tavern; he helped run the whole of Gelderai's after-dark scene below the canopy, including its taverns, inns, dance halls, gaming rooms, small theaters, restaurants, and festivals. He knew how to make nightlife feel alive without letting it descend into complete chaos, and because he genuinely likes people, he built an enormous informal network. Bartenders knew him. Musicians, guards, courtesans, cooks, and merchants knew him. Criminals most definitely knew him, and were considerably less enthusiastic about it. He and Saelric Veyrish worked the same rooms for a decade and reached an understanding early: Lucan does not ask what Saelric sells, and Saelric does not sell anything about Lucan. He supposedly once ended a tavern brawl involving fourteen people without throwing a single punch. He simply shouted, "Anyone who breaks furniture is paying for it." Apparently that was enough.

The Night the Lanterns Went Out
When the undead came for Gelderai in Goldenleaf of 1306, Lucan did what he had always done when a crowded room went wrong: he kept people calm, kept them moving, and kept them pointed at the door. He left during the attack with very little of his own, and a great many of the musicians, bartenders, cooks, and dancers he had worked beside for twenty years left alongside him. Most of them ended up in Rokoura, so Lucan did too.

The Brightest Place He Has Ever Lived
Lucan has been in Rokoura for three weeks, and he will admit it is not the obvious city for a dhampir. It is all white sand, open sky, and a sun that he has so far failed to charm. He sleeps through most of it. But its nights are warm, its people love music, food, and a good competition, and it has almost no nightlife to speak of, which to Lucan is not a problem but an invitation. He has already walked the Tฤtahi Market Coast every evening since he arrived, learned the name of nearly every stall-keeper on it, and formed a number of opinions about where the musicians should stand.

Goals & Aspirations

Rokoura After Dark
Lucan intends to turn Rokoura into somewhere people want to stay after sunset. Not a louder city, or a rowdier one, just a warmer one at night: good music at the right hour, food worth staying for, and a reason for travelers to stay three nights instead of one. He does not believe he makes anyone money. He believes he makes people want to be somewhere, and the money follows on its own.

Work for His People
Dozens of Gelderai's musicians, bartenders, cooks, and dancers followed him south with nothing but their skills, and Lucan considers every one of them his responsibility, whether or not they agree. He means to have all of them working by winter. He is well past halfway already, mostly by introducing the right people to each other at the right moment and then taking no credit for it.

A Stage for the Sunstone Hall
Lucan has heard that a Sun Dwarf brewer in Rokoura has already named a mead hall she cannot yet afford to build. He has not introduced himself to her. He has, however, already worked out where the stage should go.

ATTENTION!
Lucan Veyre is an E-grade dhampir bard and rogue, and he is dangerous, just not in the way most people expect. He can handle a rapier, fights dirty when he has to, and has survived twenty years of nightlife with his looks intact, but his most dangerous weapon is his mouth: he can talk his way through situations most people would have to fight through. More importantly, he knows everyone and remembers everything. Assume that anything said in a room he is working may reach him by morning. He is discreet and genuinely kind, but anyone in Rokoura with something to hide should assume he already knows who they are. He does not drink blood, and asking will get you a joke rather than an answer. He is not fond of daylight. Look for him after sunset.
