Kiri Shadowpaw

I have mapped seventeen dungeons, descended six mystic realms, and opened things that were not meant to be opened by anyone living. And none of them talked back. This one does. I am not leaving.

Physical Description

Kiri Shadowpaw
Kiri Shadowpaw, in her study in Silmarithil
Appearance

Kiri Shadowpaw is twenty-eight years old and has the specific quality of stillness that belongs to people who spend a great deal of time in places where making noise is inadvisable. She is mid-height and lean, with warm olive skin and dark brown hair worn in long micro-braids that she keeps tied back while working and lets fall loose in the evenings. Her catfolk heritage is most visible in two places: her ears, which are large and tawny-furred and swivel with a life of their own, and her eyes, which are a deep amber-gold with a faintly elongated pupil that catches candlelight in a way that human eyes do not. Both are useful professionally. She has made peace with the fact that they make her immediately recognizable.

The feature people tend to focus on first, however, is neither of these. Running from her cheekbones in curved stripes, orange-red, precise, following the bone structure in a way that suggests they belong there, are natural catfolk heritage markings that she was born with and has lived with so long that she occasionally forgets they are the first thing anyone notices. They look like stylized claw marks, or like something drawn by a very deliberate hand, and they are neither. They are simply what happens when the catfolk bloodline expresses in a particular way, and in her case, it expressed fully. She has been asked if they are tattoos so many times that she no longer bothers correcting it.

Attire and Equipment

She wears dark practical clothing, fitted blacks and deep browns, with tooled leather bracers she has worn for years and a layered wrap-scarf around her neck and shoulders that doubles as concealment in certain light conditions. She carries her tools on her person rather than in a pack, distributed across pockets and integrated holsters in a configuration she has refined over ten years of professional work. She smells faintly of candle wax and old stone, which she attributes to the dungeons, and of whatever ink she most recently used in her mapping journal, which she attributes to the research. She keeps a small brass bell attached to one bracer, muted, so it does not ring, as a reference tool for testing acoustics in unfamiliar spaces.

Personality & Temperament

Positive Traits
  • Meticulous; knows a dungeon before she ever enters
  • Calm under pressure; treats danger as logistics
  • Genuinely curious; a dungeon is a puzzle first
  • Self-sufficient in the way only solo delving builds
  • Warm once past the initial professional assessment
  • Dry, observational humor once she's comfortable
Challenging Traits
  • Evaluates people like dungeon entrances: threat or not
  • Can tunnel-vision on a problem; currently the dungeon
  • Detached from things that would upset most people
  • Shows concern through actions, rarely through words
  • Underestimates social traps she'd never miss physically

A dungeon that wants to kill you is a dungeon doing its job. A dungeon that watches you decide how to handle it and then adjusts the trap layout accordingly, that is something else entirely. That is a conversation. I have been waiting my whole career to have this conversation.

Kristofferson people ask "is it safe?" Haven people ask "is it worth it?" I ask "what is it, and what does it want?" The other two questions answer themselves if you answer the third one correctly.

Every dungeon has a grammar. Learn the grammar before you learn to fear it.

  • Her mapping journal, kept continuously since age sixteen
  • Simple good meals, after years of ration-quality food
Dislikes
  • Picked-over dungeons; she wants the first entry

  • Loud parties in enclosed spaces
  • "Have you been doing this long?" (Yes. Obviously.)
  • Open ground with no cover; she's better indoors
  • Kristofferson winters, which is most of the year

Background & History

Kristofferson and the Ruins Beneath It
Kristofferson is a northern city with cold winters, good trade routes, and a geological peculiarity: it was built on top of something older, and that something older has a great deal of basement. The city's delving tradition is not formal, there are no academies, no licenses, no sanctioned expeditions, but it is deep and thoroughly documented in the knowledge that passes between people who do it for a living. Kiri Shadowpaw was born to a catfolk mother who had made the trip south from Anice to trade and a human father who ran one of Kristofferson's small cartography shops, which specialized in below-ground surveys. She learned to read dungeon maps before she learned to read city ones. She was in the upper ruins by fourteen with her father, in the deeper sections alone by sixteen, and charging professional rates by eighteen. The face markings followed her through all of it, in Kristofferson, where unusual features are common enough not to merit comment, no one ever asked.

The Professional Years
She worked the northern circuit for six years, Kristofferson's deep ruins, the contested tunnels near the Ashfield border, the sealed Vault of Corren which no one had successfully mapped until she did it in eleven days and came out with thirty-seven pages of surveys and a collection of inscribed stones that three different scholars have since spent years arguing about. She moved beyond dungeons proper around twenty-two, when a client hired her to escort a research party into what they described as "a collapsed cave system" that turned out to be a mystic realm bleed, a place where the normal world and something adjacent to it had become tangled. She handled it. She went back afterward, alone, to understand what she had handled. That pattern, go in, come out, go back in to understand, has characterized her professional approach since. She has descended six such bleeds across the northern territories, mapped four of them to completion, and returned from all six, which puts her in a statistical minority she does not think about too hard.

The Rumor That Changed Everything
She heard about the Goodberry dungeon the way she hears about most things worth investigating, through the professional network of researchers, scholars, and other delvers who share information the way merchants share road conditions: because everyone benefits from the exchange. The specific phrase that caught her was not "new dungeon" (she hears about new dungeons regularly) or "dangerous" (irrelevant to the assessment) but "responsive." Adaptive. Remembers. One researcher's account, passed through three intermediaries and probably distorted in translation, described a dungeon that had changed its layout between a first and second entry in ways that seemed to address the specific approach used the first time. Kiri read this account, read it again, and was in Goodberry within two weeks. She has now confirmed the responsiveness herself, on three separate descents, and has not stopped thinking about it since. This is, by her own private assessment, the most important thing she has found in ten years of professional work.

Goals & Current Focus

Understand the Goodberry Dungeon, Completely
This is the current consuming project. She has confirmed it is responsive. She has documented three instances of layout adaptation across her descents. She has found what she believes are communication attempts, not language as she knows it, but patterns, repetitions, something with structure that is not random. She is treating this the way she treats every dungeon: systematically, with documentation, with patience. The difference is that she has never before treated a dungeon like it might be listening to her doing so. She finds this simultaneously the most professionally exciting and most personally strange thing she has experienced in ten years of professional strangeness.

Complete the Full Survey
She has mapped the upper three levels of the Goodberry dungeon to her satisfaction. The lower sections remain partially charted, for reasons she attributes to the dungeon actively declining to let her proceed at her current rate, which she also finds interesting rather than alarming. She is not trying to force a pace the dungeon does not permit. She is trying to understand the rules of the negotiation first. She expects this to take time. She has blocked no specific calendar.

Eventually, The Seventh Realm
She has descended six mystic realm bleeds. The professional consensus among the small number of people who track such things is that seven is approximately where the cumulative exposure to realm-adjacent conditions begins producing consistent and documented effects on the delver. She is aware of this. She is not deterred by it. She intends to complete the seventh when she finds one that merits it, by which she means one she does not already understand before she enters. The Goodberry dungeon may or may not qualify. She is still working on the definition.

ATTENTION!
Kiri Shadowpaw is an active combatant and an experienced professional. She is not a frontline fighter but she has survived ten years of solo dungeon work, which means she handles enclosed-space threats with a competence and efficiency that is easy to underestimate from the outside. Do not assume she needs assistance in environments she is accustomed to.

More relevantly: she is the single most knowledgeable person currently operating near the Goodberry dungeon. If your party intends to enter it, talking to Kiri first is not merely courteous, it is strategically sound. She is willing to share information with people she judges to be serious. She judges this quickly and she is rarely wrong. She is also not going to follow anyone else's lead in an environment she has already mapped. She is available as an ally, a guide, or a consultant. She is not available as a henchman.
