Fin Ballonheart
Basic Information
Bloodline Ability
This Bloodline ability has not yet been unveiled to you.
Physical Description
Fin Ballonheart is forty-four years old, five feet and two inches, and built in the way Sun Dwarves are built: compact and dense, with the kind of physical presence that makes the height irrelevant in a room once she's speaking. Her hair is a deep copper-auburn, extraordinarily long and thick, worn in a combination of loose crimped waves and tight braids that fall across her shoulders and down her back. The braids are threaded with silver beads, each one earned, none decorative, and the overall effect is less "styled" than "accumulated," in the way of someone who is wearing their life history in their hair and doesn't see a reason to simplify it.
Her eyes are a clear pale green, bright and warm, the kind that go from easy to intent in a single shift of attention. She has a small gold ring in her nose and a silver chain necklace bearing a cross-shaped pendant, a traditional dwarven mead-compass, used in old brewing tradition to align fermentation vessels. She wears it because her grandfather wore one, and his mother before him.
On her right upper arm is a large tattoo: the face of an older male dwarf, broad-bearded and unmistakably alive in the rendering despite being only ink on skin. Beneath the portrait runs a column of geometric dwarven runes, the Ballonheart family brewing marks, the specific symbols that identify a batch as made by this lineage. The face is Aldrak Ballonheart, her grandfather and master, who taught her everything she knows about mead and a significant amount about being a person worth knowing. She had it done three years after he died, when she felt ready to carry him properly. He is never not with her.
She wears a fitted linen shirt under a working corset-bodice in dark leather with detailed tooling, and heavy-worked bracers on her forearms. Her clothes are practical and quality, she dresses like someone who takes their craft seriously without taking their appearance seriously, which is an accurate summary of her priorities.
Personality & Temperament
Fin Ballonheart is, within thirty seconds of meeting her, one of the warmest people in any room she enters. This is not a performance and it is not strategy, it is the specific dwarven warmth of someone who believes that a good evening shared with good company is among life's most valuable experiences, and who actively creates that experience everywhere she goes. She has opinions about mead. She will share them. This is not actually optional.
She is also, as the name "Honey Hammer" somewhat hints at, perfectly capable of shifting registers when the situation calls for it. She does not start fights. She ends them, usually with one hand and occasionally with a barstool, and she finds both outcomes reasonably satisfying. The dwarven fighting spirit is not a story she tells about herself, it is simply a fact about her that surfaces when it needs to.
- Genuinely warm; turns any room into a hearth in minutes
- Vast dwarven craft and brewing lore, shared with joy
- Openly honest that she lacks funds for the brewery yet
- Sharp judge of character, honed by years in taprooms
- Fights matter-of-factly; dangerous in a reassuring way
- Wears her heritage proudly, in a way that includes others
- The brewery dream dominates most unchecked conversations
- Her mead verdicts are final, tact be damned
- Says yes to any physical challenge, consequences later
- Drinks more than prudent when the evening's going well
- Impatient with those who don't love a craft the way she does
My grandfather used to say: the best mead doesn't apologize for being what it is. It just is. You drink it and you understand. I've spent forty years trying to make things that don't apologize. I think I'm getting somewhere.
I'm not starting trouble. I'm finishing it. There's a difference and the difference is important.
Someday this coast will have its Sunstone Hall. I've already picked where the taps go.
- A room with good firelight and better company
- The smell of fermenting mead, her "heartbeat of the work"
- Arm wrestling, drinking games, and a friendly brawl
- Dwarven music, especially the old Solvast Hold songs
- Talking about Aldrak, she doesn't need to be asked
- Rokoura's coastal air, more than she expected to love
- Good stone; she reads masonry the way others read art
- Weak mead served without apology; own it if it's weak
- People who dismiss dwarven tradition as "just old stories"
- Being underestimated for her height (she keeps count)
- Watching an empty wall meant for fermentation vats
- Rough seas; respected, not yet enjoyed, oddly popular
Background & History
Current Status
She is also, by her own admission, actively fundraising for The Sunstone Hall and will raise the subject unprompted, at length, and without much regard for context. She is completely honest that she does not yet have the capital, so any offer of investment should be treated as a genuine proposition rather than a con, though prospective investors should expect to hear a great deal about mead before, during, and after the conversation.
