Physical Description

Elsa
Elsa Whitter, Seamstress
Appearance

Elsa is a small, quick-moving woman with David's same watchful dark eyes and a head of curly brown hair she keeps pinned up and mostly out of the way, though strands escape by midmorning regardless. She favors practical, deep-pocketed dresses she's sewn herself, each pocket holding some combination of pins, chalk, thread, and whatever small object David has left lying around that she's confiscated "until he remembers to put it away properly."

Unique Characteristics

Elsa talks while she works, a steady stream of half-finished thoughts, market gossip, and gentle commentary, whether or not anyone's listening, and has an almost supernatural ability to mend a tear, hem a skirt, and carry on three separate threads of conversation simultaneously. She has a habit of humming hymn tunes from the Goodberry chapel while she sews, and can often be heard from the street below the Whitter workshop window on quiet afternoons.

Personality & Temperament

Positive Traits
  • Warm, talkative, and quick to make strangers feel welcome
  • Fiercely protective of David without smothering him
  • Generous with mending work for neighbors in hard times
  • Keeps the Whitter household's accounts sharp and honest
  • Has a gift for noticing when someone's having a bad day
Challenging Traits
  • Worries about David constantly, and isn't subtle about it
  • Gossips more than she'd admit to, though rarely unkindly
  • Tends to finish other people's sentences
  • Overprotective when David is teased or excluded
  • Struggles to sit still, even when told to rest

That boy reads more in a week than I have in my whole life, and he apologizes for it! I don't know who taught him to apologize for being clever.

Sit, sit, you look half-frozen, here, let me just, oh that hem's coming loose, hold still a moment, anyway, where were we?

Garrett says I'd talk to a wall if it stood still long enough. Well, walls never say anything interesting back, do they?

Likes
  • A full workshop and a full table
  • Market day gossip, the more detailed the better
  • Bright thread colors, even for plain mending work
  • Hearing David read aloud, even if she only half-follows it
  • Sunday services at the Goodberry chapel
Dislikes
  • Anyone speaking sharply to David
  • Idle hands, including her own
  • Being told to "calm down" mid-conversation
  • Poor quality thread that snaps under tension
  • Eating dinner alone

Background & History

A Trade for a Trade
Elsa grew up the daughter of a tanner on the edge of Goodberry's market district, and learned to sew out of necessity, mending her family's work clothes faster than they could wear them out. She first came to Garrett's shop as a customer, trading mending work for boot repairs, an arrangement that lasted long after either of them strictly needed it to.

Settling on Cradle Row
After they married, Elsa moved into the rooms above the cobbler's shop and quickly became as much a fixture of Cradle Row as Garrett himself, taking in mending and alterations from half the street. Her corner of the front room, a table by the window piled with fabric and thread, is as well known to the neighborhood as the workshop downstairs.

A Son Who Reads
Elsa was the one who first noticed David quietly listening at the schoolteacher's window two doors down, and was the one who marched over and asked, plainly, whether the teacher "had anything the boy could borrow." She doesn't fully understand David's love of books and numbers, but she has never once discouraged it, and keeps every book he finishes carefully stacked by his bed "so they don't get lost."

The Quiet That Followed
Elsa died on Heatwave 22, 1306, alongside Garrett and David, killed in their home above the shop by an unknown assailant who left absolutely no indication of how they entered or escaped. Every door and window was found bolted from the inside come morning, exactly as Elsa always insisted they be before bed, which has only deepened the mystery rather than resolved it. The table by the window where she did her mending sits untouched, thread still pinned mid-stitch, and neighbors who once complained (fondly) about her endless talking now say the street feels wrong without it.

The Second Pulse (Goldenleaf 7, 1306)
Elsa has never been entirely sure how to tell the story of Goldenleaf 7, mostly because she has told it so many different ways to so many different neighbors that she has stopped trying to settle on just one. What she knows for certain is that one moment there was nothing, an absence so complete it did not even feel like darkness, and the next she was gasping awake in her own bed above the shop with her heart going like a rabbit and David's name already halfway out of her mouth before she had even finished opening her eyes. She was up and moving before she had properly thought about it, out into the front room calling for her son and finding, impossibly, both him and Garrett already stumbling toward her from opposite doorways, all three of them meeting in the middle in the kind of embrace that knocks the chalk board clean off its hook.

She cried for the better part of an hour, on and off, somewhere between laughing and sobbing and scolding Garrett for standing there "like a post" instead of holding both of them at once. By evening half of Cradle Row had come by to see for themselves, and Elsa, being Elsa, fed every single one of them and told the story of the Second Pulse so many times that David gently pointed out she had changed three separate details by the fourth telling. She told him that was simply how a good story worked. The table by the window, thread still pinned mid-stitch from the night she died, is finally back in use. She says the mending waited for her. She may even be right.

Losing Him Again (Thawbloom 12, 1307)
On Thawbloom 12, 1307, Garrett died of a sudden heart attack. Elsa had lost him once already, on the night the locked shop took all three of them, and the Second Pulse had given him back to her for just over seven months. This time there was no villain to hate and no locked door to puzzle over, only a good man's tired heart, and the terrible ordinariness of that is the part she still cannot talk about. She has told the story of the Second Pulse a hundred different ways. This one, she has not told at all.

Goals & Aspirations

Garrett's Store
Garrett's Store, a place of pride
A Happy, Steady Household
Elsa's ambitions are mostly close to home: a full larder, a warm workshop, and a family that talks to each other over dinner. She measures a good day by whether everyone under her roof ate properly and got at least one good laugh in, and worries when that streak breaks.

Help David Find His People
Elsa worries that David doesn't have enough friends his own age, and has taken to "casually" inviting neighborhood children up for bread and butter whenever she can manufacture an excuse. She hasn't had much luck yet, but she hasn't stopped trying, either.

A Proper Sign for the Shop
Elsa has been quietly saving toward commissioning a proper painted sign for the workshop, something better than the chalk board Garrett currently chalks the day's hours onto, as a surprise for their next anniversary. She has not yet found a sign-painter she trusts not to overcharge "two cobblers and a seamstress."

ATTENTION!
Elsa knows nearly everyone on Cradle Row by name, by face, and usually by the state of their wardrobe, and has an opinion about all three. A party looking for low-key information about a local resident's habits, schedule, or recent troubles could do worse than a pot of tea and an afternoon of "mending" at Elsa's table; she'll talk for hours if encouraged, and rarely needs much encouragement.
