Born Among Musicians
Born in Anice to a family of renowned Vishkanya musicians, Echo showed an unprecedented talent for music from her earliest days, demonstrating abilities that set her apart even in a family of exceptional performers. Unlike traditional Vishkanya performers who focused on mastering a single instrument, Echo displayed an uncanny ability to master any instrument she touched, as if the music spoke to her directly rather than requiring traditional learning. More surprisingly, she could hear the potential music in raw materials like wood, metal, and even stone, crafting instruments that seemed to sing with voices of their own, creating sounds that other instrument makers struggled to explain or replicate.
The Calling and Journey to Goodberry
Three years before arriving in Goodberry, Echo began experiencing what she called "the Calling," a mysterious melody that would wake her in the middle of the night, a song she could never quite grasp or reproduce despite her exceptional musical abilities. The melody grew stronger over time, eventually compelling her to leave her established life in Anice and travel across Xeres Prime, following this ethereal tune that seemed to pull at her very soul. This journey ultimately led her to Goodberry, where the melody seemed strongest though still frustratingly just beyond her ability to fully comprehend, as if it existed in a dimension slightly offset from normal sound.
Love, Loss, and The Resonant Wood
In early 1302, Echo and Hotaru Wyrmwhisper discovered a mutual attraction and began dating, their connection deepening quickly as they bonded over shared values and complementary perspectives on life and nature. When Goodberry opened an official marketplace, Echo purchased a spot and established "The Resonant Wood," a shop specializing in handmade wooden string instruments like guitars, lyres, drums, and violins, while also offering repairs and singing lessons to anyone with desire and coin. Their relationship progressed to marriage on Heatwave 1, 1303, after discovering Echo was pregnant with Hotaru's child, due in mid-Harvestide, and for a brief time it seemed like Echo had found not just the place the melody had led her to, but also the person she was meant to build a life with.
The Attack and Transformation into Minuet
Soon after her wedding, Echo, pregnant and unprepared, was ambushed by an assassin in an attack that nearly cost her life and permanently altered her existence. She lost her left hand in the struggle but managed to seize a nearby lyre and bludgeon her attacker to death in a desperate act of survival. Slipping in the pool of blood that followed, she struck her head on a table, suffering a traumatic brain injury so severe that emergency open-skull surgery was the only way to save her life. When she awoke post-surgery, she discovered she had total amnesia, remembering nothing about her life before the accident, including her marriage to Hotaru, her music shop, or her pregnancy. This new version of herself called herself "Minuet" and struggled terribly with hearing about Echo, feeling the weight of expectations she couldn't meet, discovering she had no skill for music, singing, cooking, or most of the things that had defined her previous identity.
Betrayal and the Darkest Moment
In Goldenleaf of 1303, while Minuet was struggling to rebuild her identity and reconnect with the husband she couldn't remember, Hotaru went on an adventure where he encountered a beautiful Satyr and instantly fell in love. When he returned to Goodberry, he confessed his infidelity and his desire to separate from Minuet, devastating her just as she had begun to relive the feelings of love and attraction to him. Realizing she had nothing left in a world that seemingly revolved around him, memories she couldn't access, skills she couldn't perform, and now a husband who no longer wanted her, Minuet purchased a rope and attempted to end her own life in the store that Echo had owned. Her plans were foiled by a concerned Arties and Zik, who found her in time and prevented the tragedy, with Arties taking a broken Minuet into her own home with promises of brighter days to come.
Heaven's Punishment and Gift
Immediately after Minuet's attempted suicide, the Heavens intervened in a dramatic fashion, punishing Hotaru for his betrayal by providing Echo with a free cultivation breakthrough that transformed her into the most beautiful woman in the southern hemisphere of Xeres. The divine intervention also granted her the ability to teleport to a location of her choice and provided substantial financial resources to start anew. She chose Pan'Che, far to the north, and told only Arties where she was going, feeling that having no involvement in his child's life would be perfect torture for Hotaru, and explicitly requested that he not be told of her whereabouts. This gift from the Heavens represented both reward and punishment, giving her the means to escape and rebuild while making it clear that Hotaru's actions had cosmic consequences.
New Life with Morvian Dros
Three months after arriving in Pan'Che, Echo met Morvian Dros, a minotaur ambassador who was large, well-spoken, and musically intelligent, sharing her passion for music and understanding its deeper meanings. They began dating, and their relationship blossomed into something genuine and healing, with Morvian accepting her complicated past and damaged memories without judgment. Despite being on medicine to prevent pregnancy, Echo found herself pregnant again, a surprise that led to their engagement. For the last two months, she has been planning a wedding to Morvian, building a blended family that will include her daughter Galafina and the children from this new relationship, creating something entirely different from her previous life in Goodberry.
Galafina's Illness and Transformation
Five months after leaving Goodberry, Echo accidentally encountered Arties, Hotaru, and their companions in Kristofferson, where Hotaru saw his daughter for the first time, a red-scaled wyvaran named Galafina. However, the reunion was complicated by terrible news: Galafina was sick with a respiratory issue that doctors said would likely prevent her from living past the age of ten. Hotaru told Echo about someone in Goodberry, Nokko, who possessed the special ability to genetically reshape people, essentially rewriting their DNA. Two weeks later, Echo visited Goodberry for the first time since leaving, meeting with Nokko who used his unique power to change Galafina's race from wyvaran to minotaur, eliminating the respiratory condition and allowing the girl to blend in better with her step-father Morvian and her soon-to-be step-siblings. After this act of trust and cooperation, Echo promised to start letting Hotaru see his child, finally allowing him to be part of Galafina's life despite the pain of their shared past.
