Physical Description

Cassia Duskwarden
Cassia Duskwarden in full war-plate, Duskthorn alight
Appearance

Cassia Duskwarden is thirty-four years old, five feet and nine inches, and built in the manner of someone who has been performing serious physical labor since childhood and never found reason to stop. She is not large in the way of brawlers, she is lean, precise, and assembled for power-to-weight efficiency in the way of a weapon rather than a wall. Dark brown curls frame a face that reads as composed and warm in casual conversation and that shifts into something significantly harder when her attention sharpens. People who have seen both states rarely forget the difference.

In armor she is immediately distinctive: the Duskwarden plate is full articulated steel worked in black and aged gold, engraved with the scale-pattern motif of the family's traditional armorer. It fits her like it was made for her, which is because it was, the current suit is the third set commissioned for her specifically, each one updated as she has grown into her capabilities. The crimson cape is functional as much as formal, an Oraean noble house tradition worn long enough that she has stopped thinking about it as statement. The gold crown-band at her brow is the one piece of family heraldry she wears consistently out of armor as well, a flat, worked-gold headband that marks her Duskwarden lineage to those who know what they're looking at.

Out of armor she looks like a person who goes where she intends to go and occupies space without apology. She does not carry herself arrogantly, she carries herself clearly, which is a different quality and not always a comfortable one to be around if you are unsure of your own bearing.

Personality & Temperament

The first thing people notice about Cassia, after the combat reputation catches up with the person in front of them, is that she is genuinely warm. Not in the careful way of nobility performing accessibility, in the real way of someone who likes people, finds them interesting, and has never seen the point of performing coldness for the sake of an image. She asks questions. She listens to the answers. She remembers both.

The second thing people notice is that she is determined in a way that does not announce itself. She does not argue. She does not push. She simply continues in the direction she has decided on, and the gap between what she wants and what exists tends to close over time without drama. This has a way of being more disconcerting than overt force, once people realize it is happening.

Positive Traits
  • Genuinely kind by nature, not performance or strategy
  • Noble bearing from character, not pride or performance
  • Comfortable alone; her presence is a gift, not a need
  • Treats everyone equally, no tolerance for condescension
  • Faces hard truths clearly, even ending her engagement
  • Mana-channeling versatility, tempered by good judgement
Challenging Traits
  • Carries the weight of Oraeus among Vaitafe survivors
  • Grief over the ended engagement remains unprocessed
  • Tends to act on what's needed without asking first
  • Her fearsome Oraeus reputation precedes her unexpectedly
  • Noble privilege gives her access others in Rokoura lack

Being feared has never been something I sought. It is the residue of doing what needs doing, at the level that actually gets it done. I would rather be trusted. Feared means they imagine the worst of me first. Trusted means they expect the best. I prefer to live in the second one.

Oraeus gave me everything I know and some things I've had to decide what to do with. I'm not defending the city. I'm also not apologizing for being from it. I'm here now. The water is the same water.

Duskthorn has been in my hand longer than any promise I've made. It doesn't lie to me, and I don't lie to it. That's more than I can say for most conversations.

Likes
  • Morning training in low light, without an audience
  • Honest people who say what they mean without maneuvering
  • Rokoura's beach, already clarifying after a short time
  • The Vaitafe's communal warmth, which she genuinely admires
  • A good meal shared with good company; she is not ascetic
  • Solvable problems, and the patience to find the answer
Dislikes
  • Being treated as a curiosity because of the reputation
  • Cruelty mistaken for strength; Oraeus taught her that lesson
  • Oraeus politics, where cruelty becomes acceptable slowly
  • People who assume her quiet means she's finished
  • Being asked about Dorin before she's ready to address it

Background & History

The Duskwarden House
The Duskwarden family is an Oraean noble house with a martial tradition, specifically, they have served for generations as wardens of the dusk-borders, the frontier edges where Oraeus's settled territory gave way to wilderness and the things that lived in it. They are not the most powerful house in Oraeus, nor the most political. They are the house that has the most bodies in the ground and the longest institutional memory of what it costs to hold a line. Cassia was the eldest of three children and understood from an early age that the family name was not a comfort but an expectation. She did not resent it. She rose to meet it.

The Making of a Warrior
She trained under the family's martial tutor from age eight and under external masters from age fourteen, when it became clear that she had exceeded the household's capacity to challenge her. Her weapon of choice was the spear, chosen for reach, chosen for the discipline it demands, chosen because she found it honest in a way that blade-and-shield fighting was not. Her style is read as elegant by people who watch it from a distance and as terrifying by people who face it, which is a consistent property of things that are both beautiful and effective. By her mid-twenties she had fought in seven significant engagements, commanded her family's defensive forces through two frontier crises, and developed a reputation that Oraeus's military circles passed around with the specific precision of people who know exactly what they are describing.

The Bloodline Awakens
She was twenty-three when she first channeled mana through Duskthorn, in a frontier engagement against a creature that was not killable by conventional force, where the choice between retreating and doing something unprecedented was made in approximately three seconds. The mana-channeling did what she needed it to do. The creature did not survive. She spent the next year learning to control and repeat what she had done once by necessity, and the year after that learning to calibrate it. She has not spoken publicly about the nature of the ability, and nobody in Oraeus's military establishment has pressed her, they are more interested in the outcomes than the mechanism.

The Engagement and the End of It
His name was Dorin Vael, the second son of an Oraean military family, an officer of real ability and genuine charm, and for five years someone she had thought she was building a life with. The engagement came at the end of year three and lasted two more before it ended. The incompatibility was not sudden; it emerged slowly, the way structural problems in good buildings do, everything seems fine until you look carefully at one specific joint and realize it has been stressed past its tolerance. Dorin was not a bad man. He was a man who was becoming comfortable with things she was not comfortable with: the methods of Verin Nightwhisper's regime, the disappearances, the quiet cruelties of expanding power that powerful people learn to call acceptable. She was not comfortable. She named this. He was surprised, which was itself information. She ended the engagement, and three weeks later she left Oraeus, and she has not looked back in the sense of reconsidering, though she has looked back in the sense of grieving what was true before what became true later.

Rokoura
She chose Rokoura after a month of traveling without destination. The reputation of the settlement reached her through sources she found credible: a community actively rebuilding from grief, coastal, deliberately multicultural, attempting something rather than resting in what already existed. The Vaitafe connection she knew about before she arrived, she is from Oraeus, and the destruction of Vaitafe and Ahorangi by Verin Nightwhisper was not a secret in Oraeus, only a thing that people had decided not to think about too carefully. She has thought about it carefully. She is here anyway, and she does not intend to soften the contradiction or use the contradiction as reason to leave. She is going to earn whatever standing she has here, and she is going to do it without requesting absolution for things she did not do and without pretending that where she came from has no implications. She thinks that's the only honest approach. She is probably right.

ATTENTION!
Cassia Duskwarden is a D-grade combatant. She is one of the most accomplished spear-users in the world by any reasonable assessment, and her bloodline ability makes her substantially more dangerous than raw physical strength alone would indicate. If you have been building mental models around how spear wielders perform, reset them entirely before approaching her in a combat context.

She is not aggressive and will not be provoked by bluster. She has heard all of it. She is approachable, warm, and glad to have a conversation, and she is also perfectly comfortable with whatever comes next if a conversation becomes something else. Treat her accordingly and you will have a capable and genuinely valuable ally.

Regarding the Oraeus background: she is aware of what it means to be Oraean in a Vaitafe settlement. She has not asked anyone to overlook it. Approaching her directly on this topic is fine; she will not deflect. What she will not accept is being held accountable for decisions made by Verin Nightwhisper or anyone in his service. She made different decisions and she left because of it. That is the full statement.
