Briala Seawind
Basic Information
Bloodline Ability
This Bloodline ability has not yet been unveiled to you.
Physical Description
Briala Seawind is twenty-six years old, five feet and five inches, and has the particular physical quality of people who are never fully still even when standing still, a readiness in the posture, a slight forward lean that suggests she is always about to be somewhere. She has her mother's pointed ears, understated but unmistakable, and her father's copper hair, which she wears up in a loose, slightly failing arrangement that no wind or weather seems able to fully defeat. The red catches light well at sea. This is partly why she got the nickname.
Her eyes are a pale blue-grey that sharpens in certain light to something closer to sea-glass, a color that people notice more in retrospect than in the moment. Her skin is fair with the salt-and-sun weathering of someone who has spent years on open water, and she has heavy freckles across her nose and cheeks that she has never once thought to address and would consider addressing them a waste of a morning. She is not someone who thinks much about her appearance. She is someone who notices what everything around her looks like very carefully, which is a different thing.
She wears practical layered clothing suited to variable weather at sea: a cream linen long-sleeved shirt under a dark green embroidered vest, leather belt and harness straps, sturdy boots with the specific wear pattern of someone who spends time on wooden decks. She carries a navigation compass and a short blade, both at her belt, neither decorative. At her neck on a thin chain is a small silver compass charm, a gift from her father when she received her first independent command. One face of it bears a wave in low relief. The other face is blank. He said she'd know what to engrave there after her first year. She is still working on it.
She has also, in her jacket pocket, a length of frayed rope, about eight inches, frayed at both ends, from the last ship her father captained before he came home to stay with her mother. She keeps it without discussing it. People occasionally ask what it is. She says it's a knot she's working on and changes the subject, which is not true and which fools almost no one but which no one presses.
Personality & Temperament
- Genuinely warm; likes people without making them earn it
- Has a captain's natural authority; people follow her easily
- Decides fast; commits to a course, adjusts as she goes
- Speaks of her father often and warmly, not with grief
- Adapts without complaint; works with what she's given
- Half-elf patience gives her a longer view than her years
- Moves faster than situations sometimes warrant
- Carries grief cleanly, but deflects when it gets too close
- Her Oraeus roots require some tactful explaining
- Hasn't fully tested her assumptions about Rokoura's needs
- Slower to ask for help on land than she is at sea
He used to say that the sea doesn't grieve the ships it takes. It just keeps moving. I thought for a long time he was saying that to comfort me. I think now he was saying it to himself. Either way, I believed him, and I still do.
Does Rokoura need a boat captain? Obviously. You're on the sea. I'm a boat captain. I don't know what else you'd want to have this conversation about.
A ship that never leaves the harbor is just an expensive shed. Mine has somewhere to be.
- The first hour of morning at sea before the wind shifts
- A crew that works without needing everything explained
- Rokoura's coastal cliffs, walked her first morning there
- Port markets, the controlled chaos of cargo changing hands
- Her father's advice, applicable to nearly everything
- The Vaitafe's ocean relationship, which she respects
- People who can read weather
- Being asked about Oraeus like she owes an explanation
- Landlocked routes; she can do them, just doesn't enjoy them
- People who handle rope carelessly
- The particular grief of being the last of something
- Waiting for a decision that should already be made
- Calm windless water, lovely to look at, tedious to sail
Background & History
Goals
Current Status
The same goes for the rest of her. She is determined enough to argue Rokoura's harbor board into submission and easygoing enough that most people never clock the argument as an argument until it's already won. She does not need to raise her voice to get her way, and she rarely does, because she has found that she rarely has to.
None of that fully explains her on the water, though. Put her behind a wheel with open sea ahead of her and the calm sharpens into something closer to certainty. She reads wind, current, and weather with an instinct her father spent thirty years building and she inherited whole. She has never lost a ship, never lost crew to weather she could have called, and has yet to meet a storm she considered worth being afraid of. She is, without exaggeration, extremely good at the one thing she loves most in this world. Anyone who needs something moved by water, or needs to know what the water is about to do, should ask her first and everyone else a distant second.
