Physical Description

Ao Linx
Ao Linx, The Coin-Chain Dancer
Appearance

Ao Linx is twenty-four years old and moves like she has never had to think about where her feet are. The catfolk half of her ancestry shows most clearly in her ears, tufted and warm brown, sitting high on her head through the fall of her dark hair, and in the particular quality of her stillness when she isn't performing: watchful, quiet, the kind of resting attention that does not look like attention until something moves. Her eyes are green-hazel with a faint feline elongation to the iris, and they read a room considerably faster than her expression suggests. She has warm golden-tan skin, a scatter of light freckles across her nose and cheeks, and the lean build of someone who has spent years in serious physical practice, not for fitness, but because the form requires it.

When she performs, the outfit does most of the introducing: deep burgundy fabric layered with coin chains and gold tassels, a fur-trimmed skirt that carries the catfolk aesthetic deliberately, gold bangles stacked on her wrists and a wide hammered-gold cuff on one arm. The coins catch the candlelight of whatever tavern she is in, and she is extremely good at knowing exactly where the light is. When she is not performing she dresses simply, practical clothing, nothing that announces itself. The contrast is not accidental.

Unique Characteristics

She has small catfolk fangs, just visible when she smiles fully, which she does more than you would expect from someone who guards herself as carefully as she does. Her tail, short-furred, brown with a dark tip, tends to telegraph her moods in the way she has never fully managed to train out of it. When she is comfortable, it moves slowly and loosely. When she is not, it goes still. Most people do not know to look for it. She has learned to be grateful for that.

Personality & Temperament

Positive Traits
  • Warm and genuine once she decides she likes you
  • Sharp and perceptive; reads people well from experience
  • Self-reliant without being cold about it
  • Playful, dry wit, especially with women she likes
  • Fully present when dancing, no performance behind it
  • Quietly curious; asks questions and remembers answers
Challenging Traits
  • Guarded at first; the warmth takes time to surface
  • Has walls built for reasons she won't explain
  • Uses humor to deflect when things gets genuinely personal
  • Can go quiet without warning when something's wrong
  • Not interested in being recruited or guided by others

People always think the dancer is performing for them. I'm not. I'm performing, and they happen to be there. There's a difference that matters to me a great deal.

I've been in every kind of tavern in every kind of city. I know what trouble looks like before it knows what it looks like. Silmarithil doesn't smell like trouble. That's why I'm here.

I've learned every tavern's exits before I've learned anyone's name. Silmarithil is the first place I haven't needed to.

Likes
  • Dancing, the practice of it more than the performance
  • Forest air at night; she sleeps better with a window open
  • Women with opinions they don't apologize for
  • Places with good acoustics that nobody has noticed yet
  • Candlelight specifically over torchlight
  • Cats, she finds them professionally respectful
  • Staying long enough to learn the regulars' names
Dislikes
  • Men who interpret proximity as permission
  • Being asked where she is really from
  • Loud places with no rhythm to the noise
  • Anyone who thinks a tip buys more than a dance
  • Being told to smile by someone she doesn't know
  • Cities with too much sun and too little shade

Background & History

Born Between Two Worlds
Ao was born in Anice, the catfolk homeland, to a catfolk mother named Sera and a human father who passed through on trade business and did not stay long after it was clear he had left something behind. Sera raised her alone, which was not unusual in Anice and which did not produce the particular bitterness in Ao that it might have elsewhere. What it produced instead was a very clear early understanding that she would be building her own life from her own materials, and that this was fine. Anice is a city that moves, and she moved with it. The cat ears and the tail were her mother's. The stubbornness, Sera always said, came from the other side.

Learning to Dance
She was eight when she started watching the coin-chain dancers in the evening markets of Anice, and nine when she started copying the movements in the narrow space behind Sera's house. Her mother noticed and found her a teacher, an older catfolk woman named Lisseth who had danced professionally for thirty years and who taught the way people teach when they have decided it is worth their time: completely, and with very little patience for anything less than honest effort. Ao gave honest effort. By fourteen she was performing alongside Lisseth for coin. By sixteen she was performing alone and sending half her earnings home. The name "Linx" she took herself at fifteen, catfolk tradition allows a chosen name, and she chose one that felt like hers. She has not explained further than that, and Lisseth, who understood the impulse, never asked.

The Circuit
She left Anice at eighteen with enough saved to travel and enough skill to work wherever she arrived. The years since have taken her through a rotation of cities, the markets of Pan'Che, the taverns of Bannon, a season in Grafton that she doesn't discuss in much detail, and a handful of smaller towns in between. She built a reputation as a serious performer, the kind who could hold a room at full volume and could hold one just as well at near silence. She learned the difference between a crowd that was watching and a crowd that was listening. She developed strong opinions about floor surfaces and lighting. She got very good at reading a room before she had taken five steps into it.

Why She Stopped Moving
The circuit has a particular kind of exhaustion that does not come from the dancing. It comes from the between parts, the packing, the arriving, the reading of new spaces, the careful management of who you let close and who you don't. Ao is good at all of it. She has been good at all of it for long enough that she has started to notice the cost. There were also, across the years, enough men who decided that watching her dance entitled them to something it did not, some who were easily redirected, some who were not, some situations that required handling in ways that left marks she does not describe. She does not carry these as injuries exactly, more as information that has become permanent. The information is: she knows what she wants and she knows what she does not want, and she is done spending energy managing the gap between those two things when she could simply choose differently about where she lives.

The Decision to Come to Silmarithil
She heard about Silmarithil the way she hears about most places, through other performers, who pass information about cities the way merchants pass information about roads. What she heard was: forest, calm, a community that had built something deliberately and was proud of it. She has been in cities that built themselves by accident and it shows. She wanted something different. She arrived this week and has been conducting the same assessment she conducts of every room she walks into, reading the light, reading the people, deciding what she thinks. So far, she thinks it might be worth staying for a while. She has not yet decided what "a while" means. She is hoping it means something longer than she has allowed before.

Goals & Aspirations

Stay Somewhere Long Enough for It to Matter
The circuit was a good life and she is not pretending otherwise. But she has been building temporary versions of everything for six years, and she is aware that there is something she has not tried yet, which is staying. Silmarithil is the test of that. She has not told anyone it is a test. She is treating it like a decision that has already been made, because that is the only way she knows to make things stick.

Dance for the Art, Not Just the Coin
She will perform for coin because she needs coin and she is good at it and there is no shame in that. But she has been performing for other people's enjoyment for long enough that she sometimes loses track of what she is doing it for herself. She wants to find that again, the choreography she makes for no audience, the form she practices at dawn in an empty room because the movement itself is worth doing. She has not had space for that in a long time. A place to live that stays the same from week to week would help.

Find Something Worth Trusting
This one she would not phrase as a goal out loud. But it is the thing underneath the other things. She is twenty-four years old and she has been careful for a long time, and careful is exhausting, and she would like to find enough reasons to be less of it. She does not need to be saved or fixed or shown the way. She needs something small, a regular table at a good inn, a neighbor who means what she says, a place she can come back to. She is not asking much. She has stopped asking for much. She is hoping Silmarithil surprises her.

ATTENTION!
Ao Linx is a non-combatant. She has no combat training, no combat equipment, and no interest in acquiring either. She is a performer and she is excellent at it, do not mistake "graceful and perceptive" for "capable of defending herself in a fight." Involving her in dangerous situations is a real choice with real consequences.

Additionally: Ao is exclusively interested in women, romantically and otherwise. This is not a personality quirk that changes with persuasion, charisma rolls, or persistence, it is a fixed character trait shaped by experience she does not discuss in detail. Male characters who approach her romantically will be declined. She will be polite about it exactly once. This is not a plot hook. It is simply who she is.
