Physical Description

Alar Thornrunner
Alar Thornrunner, on the edge of the Elderwood
Appearance

Alar Thornrunner is twenty-eight years old, five feet and eleven inches, and built lean in the way of someone who moves constantly through terrain that punishes bulk. His dark hair falls to his shoulders in loose, slightly damp waves, it is rarely fully dry because he is rarely fully indoors, and he wears it loosely tied when precision matters and lets it go when it doesn't. His features read as handsome in the specific way of people who are not thinking about it: sharp jaw, dark eyes with a quality of attention that registers before anything else does, freckles scattered across his nose and upper cheeks in a way that looks entirely wrong for someone whose gaze is that watchful.

His ears are a half-elf's: not the dramatically pointed ears of a full-blooded wood elf, but noticeably tapered at the top in a way that marks the heritage for anyone paying attention. He has long since stopped registering how people react to them. The more notable feature, for those who look past the ears, is the tattoo on the right side of his neck, a flowing pattern of vines and a single arrow, rendered in dark ink that has settled into his skin with the look of something applied years ago and kept. It is an elven hunter's mark. He will explain its meaning to people who ask with genuine interest.

He wears dark, worn leather armor, close-fitting, riveted, repaired in multiple places with thread that doesn't quite match, and carries a hunting blade at his back alongside his bow. The bow is his primary weapon and receives the care that the armor only partially does: the string checked daily, the wood maintained through each season's humidity and cold. He smells of forest, and specifically of the Elderwood, the particular clean green-and-stone scent that is slightly different from ordinary woodland and that he has not yet noticed is on him because he hasn't been away from it long enough to notice the contrast.

Personality & Temperament

Positive Traits
  • Genuinely observant; remembers details for weeks
  • Comfortable with silence; restful, not oppressive
  • Shows rather than announces; brings what you need
  • Dry, quiet humor that keeps landing after the fact
  • Has a private code about what he'll hunt or contract for
  • Patient in the field to a degree others find alarming
Challenging Traits
  • His hunter's attention makes conversation unnerving
  • Does not explain himself when he declines a job
  • Underestimates how much his silence reads as disapproval
  • Uninterested in city politics, which causes some friction
  • His half-elf heritage surfaces in quiet, complicated ways

A bad hunter watches the prey. A good hunter watches everything else, what the prey is watching, what's watching the prey, what changed in the last hour that made the prey decide to move. The arrow is the last thing. It's almost the least important thing.

The Elderwood is not a normal forest. I'm aware. That's why I'm here.

Silence isn't empty. It's just where the information lives.

Likes
  • Overcast mornings in the Elderwood, better for tracking
  • A bowstring worn to exactly the right tension
  • One precise question beats three vague ones
  • The Silmarithil market during quiet, off-peak hours
  • Rain, washes scent, softens ground, makes movement quieter
  • A fire at night after a long track, when the work is done
  • Animals difficult enough to require real thought
Dislikes
  • Trophy hunting, the animal matters, the antlers don't
  • Clients who want a story more than a result
  • Loud groups that ruin hours of approach in seconds
  • Being asked if his ears affect his hearing
  • Inns with thin walls and neighbors who snore
  • The assumed conversation about his mother's people

Background & History

Between Two Worlds
Alar's father was a human scout who worked the border forests between settlements, not a hunter by trade, but a man who moved through forest for a living and had the associated skills. His mother was a wood elf of a family that had lived in the Elderwoods for generations, on the far edge of the territory that would eventually be settled around Silmarithil. They met on a survey route and produced, some months later, a son with his father's dark hair and his mother's tapered ears and a predisposition toward the outdoors that manifested before he was old enough to explain it. He grew up in his father's human settlement but spent every summer with his mother's kin in the forest, moving between two environments that each fit him differently and neither fit him completely.

The Defining Loss (Age 14)
His father was killed on a scouting assignment when Alar was fourteen, not by a creature, not by the forest, but by bandits who had observed the scout's regular routes and waited. The specific quality of that loss shaped what Alar became: it was preventable, in the way that only preventable things leave the particular kind of mark they leave. His father had underestimated the threat of known, human-scale danger in favor of expertise in natural ones. Alar took this as the more important lesson. He went to live with his mother's kin, trained harder than any of them expected from a half-blood of fourteen, and arrived at his eventual craft with something underneath it that had less to do with love of the hunt and more to do with love of the knowledge that precedes it, the knowledge that keeps you alive to be surprised by nothing.

The Hunter's Mark (Age 17)
Three years after arriving with his mother's family, at seventeen, he completed his first significant solo hunt, tracking a corrupted forest guardian creature that had been displacing wildlife across a three-mile radius and that two experienced elven hunters had attempted and abandoned. He took it alone, over four days, using terrain knowledge he had developed in the months prior rather than the straight pursuit approaches he'd been taught. His mother's uncle gave him the tā in the vine-and-arrow pattern after he returned: an elven hunter's mark acknowledging that the forest had accepted him as one of its operating agents. The vine represents the forest claiming a portion of the hunter, you belong to it as much as you move through it. The arrow represents the path between what you track and what you choose to do about it. He has had the tattoo on the right side of his neck for eleven years and touches it sometimes without noticing he is doing it.

The Working Years (Age 20–28)
He struck out independently at twenty, which was later than most people expected and earlier than his elven relatives thought was wise. He spent eight years building a professional hunting practice across the region, creature tracking and removal, territory surveys, guiding parties through difficult forest terrain, occasional work for city governments that had monster problems and needed someone who could move through dense woodland quickly and quietly. His reputation is solid and specifically worded: the hunters who know his name say he is the person to call when the target is intelligent enough to learn from its first encounter with you and you cannot afford a first encounter that is also a mistake. He doesn't advertise. The work finds him through people who dealt with the previous contractor's inadequacy.

The Elderwood Called
He heard about the Elderwood through a fellow hunter who had attempted a contract in it and pulled out halfway through, not from danger, but from the quality of difficulty, which he described as unlike normal forest work. Alar went to evaluate the claim. He found it accurate: the Elderwood is a forest that seems to have its own operational logic, where creature behavior follows patterns that take weeks to begin to understand, and where the rules of standard tracking apply imperfectly at best. He settled in Silmarithil as a base of operations and has been working the Elderwood seriously for the past several months. He is currently mapping the creature population density across the forest's major zones and has noticed, in the eastern section, that something has begun to change, movement patterns shifting, prey animals avoiding corridors they used through most of last season. He doesn't know what's causing it yet. He is, in the quiet way of someone who has found the interesting problem, extremely interested in finding out.

ATTENTION!
Alar Thornrunner is an active combatant, skilled specifically at range, capable in close quarters, and thoroughly dangerous in forested terrain where the environment becomes an extension of his approach. Do not assume his quiet demeanor corresponds to limited capability. It does not.

He is available for creature-related contracts in and around the Elderwood and the Silmarithil region. He is not available for contracts involving sapient targets, ecosystem clearance, or clients he has assessed and found wanting. He will not explain the assessment. He takes the contracts that serve actual purposes and turns down the ones that don't, and he does not find the distinction difficult to make.

If you want information about the Elderwood, creature distribution, terrain, behavioral anomalies, he is the most current source available. He is willing to share information with parties who are going to do something useful with it and who are not going to make his tracking work harder by stomping through his survey zones.
