Widow's Retreat

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The walls are made from fine woven flax panels treated to a warm golden hue, and the thicker construction provides insulation and quiet. Large, low windows fill the rooms with natural light while keeping the interior cool and peaceful. The thatched roof extends wide to create shaded areas outside and protect from weather, while the underside is finished with calming colors that add beauty to the space where residents often rest or reflect.

Inside, the structure balances privacy and community. Smooth, cushioned wooden floors ensure safety and comfort, while sleeping alcoves along the walls provide personal retreats. Each alcove contains a low bed, storage shelves, and room for personal touches like carvings or woven hangings. Curtains can be drawn for privacy or tied back to remain part of the shared space, allowing residents to shape their environment to their own needs and moods.

The central gathering area is warm and inviting, centered around a small steady fire pit surrounded by cushioned chairs and woven rugs. Here, residents share meals, stories, and quiet companionship. A nearby kitchen and dining space are designed for easy use, with surfaces set at practical heights and a communal table for those who wish to eat together. Meals are often brought from the Whare Kai, but elders can cook or prepare food if they prefer, maintaining independence while ensuring no one goes hungry.

Surrounding the retreat are raised garden beds, smooth walkways, and shaded benches, giving residents peaceful places to garden, rest, or visit with family and children. The Widow’s Retreat embodies the belief that elders are not to be set aside but celebrated. It provides a home where they can live comfortably, share their wisdom, and remain vital members of the community they helped build.

Benefits

The Widow's Retreat generates 2 Prestige, as providing dignified housing for honored elders demonstrates the settlement's commitment to caring for all community members throughout their entire lives. The structure comfortably houses 8 to 12 elders, providing them with both independence and community support. Residents serve as cultural repositories and advisors, providing a +2 bonus on all Knowledge (history) and Knowledge (local) checks made by any settlement member who consults with them. Once per week, the elders can share traditional wisdom during an evening gathering, granting all attendees a +1 bonus on Wisdom-based skill checks for the following three days as ancestral knowledge proves relevant to current challenges. The presence of respected elders who visibly receive excellent care increases settlement morale and attractiveness to potential residents who value communities that honor their elderly. Additionally, the daily visits by youth assigned to assist residents foster respect for elders across generations, strengthening cultural continuity.
