Wharepuni

Wharepuni (Sleeping House)

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

Raised four feet above the sand on carved posts, the Wharepuni stays dry during most high tides while remaining easy to access from both ends. The posts are carved with gentle, repeating patterns and images of resting animals, symbolizing the natural rhythm of sleep and renewal. Its elongated form creates a spacious interior with generous headroom, aided by a steeply pitched roof that prevents the space from feeling crowded even when fully occupied.

The walls are made of woven harakeke backed with thin wooden slats, allowing air to circulate while blocking wind and rain. High-set windows can be opened for ventilation or closed during storms, and woven insect screens treated with natural oils protect sleepers from pests. Thick thatching and overhanging eaves shield the walls from salt spray, while interior mats beneath the roof catch any stray moisture and guide it safely away.

Inside, two raised sleeping platforms run the length of the building along the walls, leaving a central walkway for movement. Each sleeping space is defined by low woven dividers that provide privacy without breaking the communal atmosphere. Storage cubbies above each position keep personal belongings organized, and small changing areas at each end allow for privacy and dignity. Three small fire pits provide gentle warmth on cold nights, while subdued lighting ensures safety without disturbing rest.

The Wharepuni is carefully maintained by a house attendant who manages fires, lighting, cleanliness, and quiet hour protocols. By day, the structure is opened and aired, mats are cleaned, and the space is refreshed. By night, it becomes a living tapestry of shared stories, whispered conversations, and collective security. More than a place to sleep, the Wharepuni strengthens bonds between generations, welcomes newcomers into community life, and ensures that no one faces the night alone.
