Warrior's Training Ground

Warrior's Training Ground

Prerequisite: None
This upgrade establishes a dedicated open space for combat training, weapon practice, and the sacred performance of the haka, ensuring the settlement's defenders remain sharp and spiritually connected to their warrior traditions.

Description

Around the perimeter of the grounds stand weapon racks crafted from the same salt-treated ironwood as the palisade walls. These racks hold an impressive array of training weapons including wooden practice swords, blunted spears, staffs of varying lengths, and traditional Vaitafe weapons such as the taiaha (long staff) and patu (short club). Each weapon is carefully maintained and balanced for realistic combat simulation without the lethal edge of true battle implements. Nearby, heavy practice dummies fashioned from woven palm fronds stuffed with dried seaweed stand ready to absorb strikes and thrusts from trainees perfecting their techniques.

The northern edge of the training ground features a raised platform constructed of sturdy planks, serving as both an observation deck for instructors and a stage for haka performances. This elevated area allows combat masters to oversee multiple training exercises simultaneously while providing clear sightlines across the entire grounds. When the drums sound and warriors gather for haka, this platform becomes the focal point where leaders stand to call out the chants and set the rhythm that drives the performance.

Several carved posts stand at cardinal points around the training ground, each topped with a different ancestral guardian figure representing various aspects of warrior prowess: strength, speed, cunning, endurance, and honor. These tikanga serve as both inspirational symbols and practical markers for formation drills and group exercises. The central post, taller and more elaborately carved than the others, depicts a warrior in full haka stance with tongue extended and eyes wide in the traditional pukana expression of fierce determination.

The training ground comes alive with activity throughout the day. Mornings often begin with the thunder of synchronized haka performances, where warriors move as one body, their voices echoing across the tidal flats in powerful displays of unity and intimidation. The rhythmic stomping, chest slapping, and fierce chanting serve not only to build esprit de corps but also to announce to any who might be watching that this settlement is defended by warriors who honor the old ways. Individual combat drills follow, with instructors pairing students against each other in controlled sparring matches that test reflexes, technique, and tactical thinking. By evening, the grounds may host demonstrations of traditional weapon arts or lessons in hand-to-hand combat adapted to fighting on the unstable surfaces of the sandbars.

Benefits

All settlement guards and warriors who train regularly at the Warrior's Training Ground gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls and a +1 bonus to Intimidate checks (the latter increases to +3 when performing a haka before combat). Once per week, the settlement may perform a mass haka that grants all participants a +2 morale bonus to attack and damage rolls for the next 24 hours. This upgrade generates 4 Prestige, as the disciplined warriors and powerful haka performances demonstrate the martial strength and cultural vitality of the Duke's domain.
