Description

The festival grounds are enclosed by a low ceremonial wall constructed from coral stone and decorated with intricate carvings depicting the history of the Vaitafe people, their voyages across the ocean, legendary feasts from tribal history, and the gods and spirits associated with abundance and community. At the main entrance, two massive carved posts rise twenty feet high, featuring full-figure ancestor representations whose outstretched arms welcome all who approach in peace. These guardian posts are masterworks of tribal carving, with details so fine that individual teeth, tattoo patterns, and woven garment textures are clearly visible. During major festivals, fresh flower garlands cascade from their arms, and polished shells and pearls are placed at their bases as offerings.

The central fire pit, known as the Heart of the Feast, serves both practical and spiritual purposes. This perfectly circular pit, lined with the finest heat stones and surrounded by carved benches for feast masters, provides the flames used to heat all the umu ovens. More importantly, it serves as the ceremonial center where feasts are formally opened with prayers, chants, and offerings to the ocean gods. During the most sacred festivals, this fire burns continuously for days, tended by dedicated fire keepers who maintain the flames using specially prepared wood that produces minimal smoke and maximum heat. The pit is considered sacred ground, and only those with proper spiritual authority may add fuel to its flames.

Supporting the Grand Festival Grounds is an impressive array of specialized structures. The master feast hall, a large building with walls of woven pandanus and a towering thatched roof, contains kitchens for preliminary food preparation, cold storage rooms built partially underground and cooled by tidal water circulation, and a great hall where feast masters meet to plan elaborate celebrations that might involve dozens of dishes and hundreds of participants. Adjacent to this, a performers' pavilion provides space for the dancers, chanters, and musicians who provide entertainment during major feasts. A separate weapons house stores the ceremonial clubs and spears used in traditional warrior displays that often accompany the most significant celebrations.

The grounds include a sacred grove of breadfruit and coconut trees, planted in traditional patterns and blessed by the settlement's spiritual leaders. The accelerated growth from Goodberry's dimensional magic means these trees produce abundantly year-round, providing reliable supplies of feast staples. Between the trees, herb gardens supply the aromatic leaves and roots used in traditional feast cooking. The entire complex operates under the direction of a master feast coordinator, a position of tremendous prestige requiring decades of experience and deep knowledge of tribal traditions. This master oversees a team of specialized cooks, fire tenders, servers, and ceremonial assistants who work together to produce feasts that become legendary throughout the region.
