Description
The Tide Markers stand like sentinels across the Tidal Expanse, a network of beautifully carved poles that serve both practical and spiritual purposes for the Vaitafe people. Each marker is crafted from ironwood or other dense, water-resistant timber that can withstand the constant assault of salt spray and tidal surges. Standing between eight and twelve feet tall, these poles are sunk deep into the sand and stone of the Spine Bars and key crossing points, their bases reinforced with heavy rocks to ensure they remain upright against the strongest currents.
The carvings that adorn each marker tell a story in the traditional Vaitafe style. The lower portions feature stylized representations of sea creatures: octopi with curling tentacles, sharks with rows of triangular teeth, and turtles with geometric shell patterns. As the eye travels upward, the carvings transition to wave patterns that undulate around the pole's circumference, each wave crest aligned with a specific tide height. The highest portions display celestial symbols representing the three moons, with Lumina at the peak since its rapid cycle most directly influences the daily tides.
Horizontal grooves carved at precise intervals mark the water levels for low tide, mid-tide, high tide, and the dangerous king tides that occur during Umbra's quarterly peaks. Each groove is inlaid with crushed shell mixed with tree resin, creating permanent white lines that remain visible even when weathered. Some markers include additional grooves colored with natural pigments: red ochre warns of dangerous crossing times, while blue indicates safe passage windows. The upper section of each pole features a carved face, sometimes representing an ancestor or guardian spirit, whose expression seems to watch over travelers navigating the treacherous flats.
The markers are strategically positioned to create visual chains across the expanse. From any marker, travelers can see at least two others, allowing them to navigate safely even in poor visibility. During spring tides when Lumina and Verdant align, the markers stand half-submerged, their wave carvings seeming to merge with the actual water. At the lowest ebbs, they tower above the exposed sand like ancient monuments, their shadows stretching long across the rippled flats.
Local tradition holds that touching a marker before crossing brings good fortune, and many poles show smooth patches where countless hands have rubbed the wood over time. Children learn to read the markers from an early age, understanding that when water reaches the red warning groove, it is time to seek high ground immediately. Some markers include small shelves or niches where travelers leave offerings of shells or carved tokens, thanking the spirits for safe passage across the ever-changing landscape.
Benefits
The Tide Markers provide crucial navigation and safety information throughout the Tidal Expanse. Any character traveling through the area gains a +4 bonus to Survival checks to avoid becoming lost or trapped by rising tides. The markers also reduce the risk of tidal accidents for settlers and visitors by half. The visible organization and care for traveler safety generates 2 Prestige.
