Description
These carefully constructed mounds rise two to three feet above the surrounding ground, their soil enriched with composted seaweed, fish scraps, and other organic matter. The raised design provides excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for the kumara vines to flourish. Each mound supports several plants, their heart-shaped leaves spreading across the surface while the precious tubers develop below.
Kumara cultivation requires patience and skill. Gardeners must balance watering to prevent both drought stress and rot, monitor for pests that target the sweet tubers, and time the harvest carefully to maximize yield without sacrificing storage quality.
