Sweat Lodge

Sweat Lodge (Purification House)

Prerequisite: None
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

The entrance to the lodge faces east to greet the rising sun, covered by a heavy flap of seal hide that can be dropped to seal the interior completely during purification ceremonies. Just outside the entrance, a wooden platform provides space for participants to disrobe and prepare themselves mentally for the ritual ahead. Carved posts flank the doorway, one bearing symbols of physical purification (waves washing clean a shore), the other bearing symbols of spiritual cleansing (smoke rising to the heavens). Between these posts, offerings of shells, flowers, and small carved figures are regularly placed by those seeking purification.

Inside the lodge, the floor is covered with a thick layer of fine sand brought up from the tidal flats and mixed with crushed shells for drainage. This base layer helps absorb moisture and provides a comfortable surface for sitting during the long ceremonies. Woven mats are placed in a circle around the central fire pit, providing seating for up to eight participants at once. The walls are hung with bundles of aromatic coastal plants: sea lavender, salt grass, and dried kelp. When heated by steam, these plants release their essences, creating a purifying atmosphere that is said to open the airways and clear the mind.

The heart of the lodge is the stone pit, a circular depression one foot deep and three feet across, lined with fire-blackened stones. During ceremonies, river stones collected from the Storm Debris Zone are heated in an exterior fire until they glow with internal heat, then carried into the lodge using carved wooden tongs and placed carefully in the central pit. Once the glowing stones are in place, the entrance flap is dropped, and the lodge keeper pours seawater mixed with medicinal herbs over the heated stones. The resulting steam fills the enclosed space, creating an intense heat that opens pores, cleanses the skin, and induces a state of deep relaxation and spiritual openness. The temperature and intensity can be controlled by adjusting the amount of water poured and the number of stones used, allowing for different levels of experience from gentle warmth to intense purification.

Outside the lodge, a second fire pit is maintained constantly, with stones heating in the flames throughout the day so ceremonies can be conducted at any time. A covered storage area nearby holds stacks of additional stones, wooden tongs for handling hot rocks, sealed gourds of purified seawater mixed with various medicinal herbs, and bundles of fresh aromatic plants. A stone-lined channel carries excess water away from the lodge, preventing the area from becoming muddy during the twice-daily tides. After each ceremony, the lodge is opened fully to air out, the used stones are removed and replaced, and fresh sand is added to the floor as needed. The lodge keeper maintains the fires, prepares the ceremonial waters, and guides participants through the proper rituals of purification, which often include prayers, chants, and the recounting of personal transgressions or spiritual burdens that one wishes to be cleansed of.
