Spear Throwing Range

Spear Throwing Range

Prerequisite: Tribute House
An upgrade for the dimensional expansion.

Description

Targets positioned at twenty-yard intervals down the range consist of thick woven mats stretched across wooden frames and painted with concentric circles in red, white, and blue. The innermost circle measures only six inches across, demanding extraordinary precision to strike consistently. Behind each target frame stands a barrier wall constructed from packed sand reinforced with woven palm fronds, designed to safely stop spears that miss their marks and prevent dangerous ricochets. These backstops require regular maintenance as impacts gradually degrade their integrity, but they successfully contain even the most powerful throws. Distance markers carved from driftwood stand at precise intervals, allowing throwers to gauge range accurately and adjust their technique accordingly. Advanced targets feature moving elements, suspended weights that swing slowly back and forth to simulate prey or enemies in motion.

A covered observation platform stands to the side of the throwing stations, positioned to give range masters and judges clear views of all lanes simultaneously without placing themselves in danger. This elevated structure features bench seating for officials and spectators, storage compartments for scoring tablets and ceremonial awards, and a large gong used to signal the beginning and end of competition rounds. The platform roof extends forward to provide shade over the throwing stations during midday heat, while remaining open on three sides to allow breezes to flow freely. Carved rankings boards display the names of current champions in various categories including distance, accuracy, speed throwing, and moving target competitions. These boards are updated after each formal competition, with previous champions' names recorded on tablets stored in the platform's base to preserve the range's history.

Safety protocols govern all range activities with strict enforcement by appointed range masters who have authority to remove anyone who violates established rules. Before throwing begins each day, keepers walk the entire range checking for obstacles, damaged targets, or unstable barriers that might create hazards. Bright flags mounted on tall poles signal when the range is active and throwing is permitted, with different colored flags indicating whether the range is open for practice, closed for maintenance, or reserved for formal competition. No one is permitted downrange while flags are flying, and violations result in temporary bans from the facility. Young warriors learning spear throwing begin with the closest targets and lightest weapons, gradually progressing to greater distances and heavier spears as their skills develop under the watchful guidance of experienced instructors.

Competition days at the range draw crowds from throughout the settlement, with warriors competing for prizes and recognition while spectators wager on outcomes and cheer for favorite throwers. The competitions test multiple aspects of spear throwing ability including raw accuracy at long range, rapid successive throws against multiple targets, and the challenging discipline of hitting moving targets. Champions earn not only material prizes but also significant social status, as spear throwing prowess directly translates to hunting success and combat effectiveness. The range serves crucial military purposes beyond recreation, ensuring that the settlement maintains a core of skilled warriors capable of defending against threats or providing food through fishing and hunting. Evening practice sessions remain popular year-round, as warriors maintain their edge through constant repetition and friendly competition. The rhythmic sound of spears striking targets becomes a familiar backdrop to settlement life, a reassuring reminder that the Vaitafe people remain ever vigilant and prepared to protect their tidal homeland through superior martial skill.
